Disenchanted with her work, her new assignment brings two surprises that may change her mind: the discovery of a clandestine smuggling ring, and perhaps even more surprising, the appearance of a very much alive Severus Snape.

Aaacckk! Snapes alive and as snarky as ever. And what the hell kind of creature is it? Evil cliffie!!!
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Well, it's certainly no fun if Snape isn't at least a little snarky lol. Thank you for reading and reviewing!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this story. Thank you so much for continuing it and sticking with it to the end! I particularly liked how you resisted temptation to extend the end - it was a perfect spot to finish it.

Thank you for reading and reviewing! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It definitely felt like a natural end for this story, though a few have suggested writing a sequel. I'll have to see if these characters are up for another adventure : )

This was a wonderfully written story, very well thought out, the storyline fresh and original... and I really can't find the right words to truly express how deeply and fully I enjoyed this fic! Although the ending was superb and wrapped everything up nicely and neatly, I can't help but feel saddened that we are at the end of this tale... Please, please, please say you'll write another HG/SS story! I do think I'm addicted to your writing!
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you! Your kind words and supportive reviews throughout definitely inspired me to keep writing, especially when it began to take longer than I had hoped. At the moment, I'm writing my exchange fic for the SS/HG Exchange on livejournal, but I'm hoping to write something else that I can post immediately as well. A few people have inspired me by suggesting a sequel, so we'll see...

Thank you for sharing your story. I really enjoyed reading it. The pace of the story was very good. One thing I especially liked is the way you treated the graduates from each Hogwarts house. You showed both the positives and the negatives. For example Thomas' puppylike enthusiasm and his curse-taking protectiveness. It seems like other stories tend to resort more to one-dimensional stereotypes. In this story, all of the characters can see how their natural responses work for them and against them. Everyone needed to work together to have the best outcome. No one is "right" or "best" all of the time. That is refreshing. Thank you.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I think I have the creative gods to thank for Thomas. Somehow, he came to me nearly fully formed. I just knew what he would do and how he would react in any given sitatuion. I'm happy that you enjoyed his and the others characters' characterizations, and I will definitely keep your comment in mind as I write my next story : )

I enjoyed your story - looking forward to more! The writing was good, and with an original story line to make it interesting.

Awww... Loved it! You even let Thomas live to carry on in Hermione's place (although you kept me guessing on that until the very moment she saw him). Very sweet, full of promise... even potentially ripe for a sequel! I hope to read more from you soon--hm88

THOMAS!! Noooooo! Aww! What a chapter! And what a cliffie. You had better be working on the next one, Missy. I have to know. Your descriptions and dialogue are perfect as always, you transport me to their world with them.

Thank you! And don't worry, the final chapter is currently with my beta so hopefully it'll be up very soon!

Awwww, poor Thomas! I hope he will be alright.I am really enjoying this - the plot of smuggled house elves is clever. It adds a new twist to the SSHG list of "how they got together." I also like how you've portrayed a deteriorating Lucius trying to restore his wealth.I look foward to the final chapter!
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you! I thought the elves might be a fun twist, so I'm glad you liked it. As for Lucius, it's rather hard for me to see him as anything but at least a little slimy, so he seemed like a natural fit for the villain. Of course, Jason Issacs' portrayal of him in the last movie certainly influenced it a little.I hope to have the final chapter posted soon!

Well that was a cliff-hanger, but a wonderful story I can't wait forr an update.

Please, please, do not harm Thomas! Wonderful chapter. I really like how things between S & H develop ever so slowly.

Well, I can make no promises; only that the next chapter will be posted soon! But I will say that I'm rather fond of Thomas myself...

A bit of a cliffhanger?! I'd say that's a real one! You would not really kill the sweet, dear Thomas, would you? But there's hope left, for the light of the spell was red and not green. Perhaps Snape with his rich experience of dark magic will be able to help Thomas. The image of a deranged Lucius Malfoy was appalling! Blackened molars? *shudder*I hope you'll update soon.....
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
I can make no promises, except that the next chapter will be up soon! I will say that I'm rather fond of Thomas though...And I'm glad you found Lucius' image appalling, as that was exactly what I was going for lol. Jason Issacs' look in DH Pt.2 was a particular inspiration.

Ohhh... not Thomas! He was just getting the hang of it all... becoming likeable... useful, even! Sigh.I've enjoyed this story all along--nice to get a sneak peek of what I assume is nearing the end. Thanks for posting!hm88

I love how he just let her unload... and how he didn't pull away. Thomas has grown on me, btw.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Severus was exactly the listener Hermione needed - someone who can empathize but isn't directly connected to the situation. Thomas has become really fun to write, and he's proven to be a lot more intelligent than he had first appeared.Thank you for reading and reviewing! I hope to have the next chapter up soon!

I'm usually pretty soft-hearted, but I didn't feel very sorry for Anna. I know that Hermione has some self-inflicted "memory charm issues", but it seemed necessary.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Anna is pretty unsympathetic. And Severus certainly sees it that way. But it's difficult for Hermione to separate the image of her parents from Anna's.Thank you for your review!

I've always been a bit confused by the fact that the most loyal of all of Dumbledore's people wasn't saved by the blasted phoenix. J.K. just really, really didn't like Snape.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
I must admit, I've read the phoenix theory in other fanfics, and it's the one that has made the most sense to me. After all, we really don't know what happened to Fawkes after Dumbledore's death.Thank you for reading and for all of your reviews!

I couldn't help but giggle at her "growing hair". Boy, she sure did go all Gryffindor on them, didn't she?
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Unfortunatley, I have been blessed (cursed) with hair similar to Hermione's, so I too have been a victim of "growing hair," and knew exactly how to describe it lol. And yes, underneath all of that jadedness, Hermione is still Hermione and still a Gryffindor.Thank you for reading and continuing to review!
Response from jenidralph (Reviewer)
I, too, have been blursed with that hair.

I'm as exasperated with Thomas as poor Hermione is. Poor kid doesn't have a clue.I'm quite looking forward to the day when I spot Snape here in the States and chase after him. ;)
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Yes, Thomas is a bit much, but his heart is in the right place. And Hermione will realize that... if she doesn't hex him first lol. And I also fantasize about the day I run into an alive and venom-free Severus Snape. Let's hope we're as quick as Hermione ; ) Thank you for reading and reviewing!
