Disenchanted with her work, her new assignment brings two surprises that may change her mind: the discovery of a clandestine smuggling ring, and perhaps even more surprising, the appearance of a very much alive Severus Snape.

I really enjoyed this - it was well-written, with an original premise, and great characterization! I'd like to see a sequel as well.

Thank you! I'm definitely considering a sequel. I'm writing my SSHG Exchange piece at the moment, but there are already new ideas swimming in my head, so there's a good chance I'll be revisiting this trio : )

LOL, your Snape is so spot on!
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you! Between him and Hermione, I enjoy writing for Snape the most. He just expresses frustration and anger so well lol.
I love how they let 'bygone be bygones'. It's realistic and very in character for both of them. I do hope you are able to post regularly with this story. It is very good!

All friendships (and maybe more...) have to start somewhere, and both of them have definitely spent way too much time dwelling in the past. Chapter 7 is currently with my beta, but I hope to have it in the queue soon!
Another wonderful chapter. I love where this is going and the creativity you have brought to it.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you! I wanted to try something a little different, so I'm glad you're enjoying the plot so far.
What a wonderful start to this story! You've managed to capture Hermione in what I deem a realistic light of how she may have turned out if things had gone differently from the epilogue. I can't wait to continue to read more of this!
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you! I've had a lot of fun writing Hermione for this story, so I'm glad that you're enjoying my attempt at a slightly jaded but totally earnest characterization.
I love your writing - it flows so beautifully and manages to incorporate evocotaive imagery with brilliant dialogue and spot on characterisation. Your Snape is wonderful. I adore his wit and his sarcasm, you get that just right, A Snape without wit is no Snape at all for me. "Drink it, you dunderhead" - LOL! And Hermione! Let's not forget Hermione; she has grown into a confident young woman who is able to match Snape's dry homour,And I know I have mentioned it before, but Thomas is a fabulous invention. I LOVE Thomas, he feels so real. This really is quality writing. The last line from Hermione had me in stitches. "Brownnoser"! Hahahahaha

Thank you for such a lovely review! I really wanted to get the characterizations just right, so I'm glad you're enjoying them. I especially love writing for Thomas. He's serves to dispel a bit of the tension between Snape and Hermione, but he can also come up with a good idea or two, as you'll see in the next chapter. Thank you again for continuing to read and review! I hope to be on a more regular posting schedule until the end of the story.
Lol, oh, Hermione, you just can't help yourself, can you?
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Lol, it's why we love her. Thank you for reading and reviewing!
I really need to go to sleep, but this has been too fascinating! You've established a really firm and total world/background/setting, and I am so excited to see where this goes next.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you! My goal was to create a solid background for the story in order to create a more unique premise, so I'm glad you're enjoying it. The next chapter is in the queue and will hopefully be up soon.
I'm liking your feisty Hermione. Still rooting for Snape, nevertheless. I have to say that I'm enjoying this a lot. Well done for your originality and exciting plot twist.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you for continuing to read and review! And don't worry, Snape will assert himself soon enough.
I have to agree with everything your earlier reviewer, KingPig says. The sum up was spot on: "professional and entertaining!.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you!
Of all the great plot twists - Hermione's drive to free House Elves has created a lucrative slave trade instead! Just as children and young women are captured and sold as slaves in parts of the world even now.And finding Snape alive and thriving is icing on the cake, of course. I love how Hermione stands up to him. And Thomas can give her a more objective viewpoint since he has no baggage with either of them. Very entertaining so far. I anxiously await your next chapter.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you for your review! I thought elf trafficking might be an interesting plot twist, certainly one I haven't seen before, so I'm glad you're enjoying it. The next two chapters are in the queue and will hopefully be validated soon!
Ah, poor Snape! He never can quite get the upper hand whenever one of The Golden Trio is involved...
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Hermione may seem to have the upper hand now, but Snape has a few things up his sleeve as well... All (well, a little more) will be revealed soon. Or, at least, in the time it takes for the next chapter to go through the queue lol. Thank you for continuing to read and review!
Well this is a lovely find. What an intriguing and exciting opening chapter. Very well-written, great dialogue and interesting original characters (love Thomas). Hermione seems like she's developed into a very capable young woman. And your introduction of Snape was masterful: just a little glimpse to whet our appetites. I look forward to reading on.

Thank you for a wonderful review! I'm glad that you enjoyed the first chapter and I hope you continue to enjoy the story as it unfolds.
Love it so far! Your writing is very well done. I love how you portray Hermione. Are you from the District? The portraits of US presidents are in the portrait gallery (near the spy museum, actually). I've lived in and around DC nearly all my life and I was initially interested in this story because of its setting.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
I'm glad you're enjoying it : ) I'm not from D.C., but I lived there for a semester while I completed an internship. To be perfectly honest, I never got around to the portrait gallery or any of the other art museums, as there were just so many to visit and not enough time! My dream is to move back there permanently, but for the moment, I'll just have to revisit the experience through fiction. Thank you for reading and reviewing!

Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
I've thought about writing a sequel, but I just haven't gotten to it... Thank you for reading and reviewing!
Thanks for sharing your story. I really enjoyed it and am glad you left it with such a feeling of hope.

I know many have asked for a final chapter, but many fine works of fiction leave some questions unanswered. Hermione is going to face her fears. That's all the audience needs to know.
I had waited for the comletion of the story to read it. It is a wonderful story with suspense, and a very satisfying conclution.

Snape doesn't pull any punches. And it's easy to understand Hermione's reluctance.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
They both certainly have valid reasons for how they reacted, it's just a matter of understanding each other. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Hmmm... very trusting of Hermione to just gulp down that potion. Good thing Severus meant her no harm. I like that they are starting to work together finally.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Yes, I think she felt a little stupid after realizing that lol. Luckily, they're a little more on the same page... well, for the most part : ) Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Awww... what a gentleman, he walked her to her room. Too bad he didn't stay to tuck her in. ;)

Indeed lol, though I think she may have been more willing than him... : )

Rushes in to fight for the underdog, that's our Hermione, no doubt about it.
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
They couldn't bring her down : ) Though, I think Snape might have preferred a little less of her proactive spirit... lol Thank you for reading and reviewing!

This was a wonderful story and your writing is very well developed! I loved the way you wove Hermione's feelings with her current assignment, while tangling both Thomas and Snape into the fray. Thomas was a fabulous OC; in fact, all the OC's were interesting and only added to the story. Thank you :)
Response from ks51689 (Author of A Devil on Her Back)
Thank you for reading and reviewing! Thomas is probably my favorite creation, so I'm glad you enjoyed him and the other OC's : )
