A companion piece to A Summer in York from Snape's point of view. Warnings: quotes, references to religion, barbarisms.

I was introduced into the SS/HG world by perselus' works in 2005, on the backwave of HBP. After being a lurker for a long while, I've started writing myself.

I am so grateful that someone (I'm so sorry I can't recall who) recommended A Summer in York, and I devoured it before finding my way here to I’ve Always Thought You Were Stupid.
Reading Severus' diary of being with Hermione during this summer is a rare privilege. I say privilege because I have rarely found that an author will include a companion piece to a story that is so filled with the answers to every question the reader might have had while reading the first piece. And I absolutely love your Severus. He is exactly as I always thought he would be: introspective, unsure, very private to the point of telling delicious lies because he cannot find the courage to speak the truth of his total love for her, filled with kindness and empathy, inordinately brave and loyal beyond measure.
I am not at all surprised that Hermione took both jobs, and that the windows are double glazed... or that they love each other completely.
Thank you so very much for both of these companionable masterpieces.
(((Hugs)))

It is so poignant, the whole tale. And now I see what was missing, and how much depth there was in him. Thank you.

Thanks to you for following the whole tale. :)
Wonderful companion piece. How would have thought Sev is a romantic??? He can quote "Song of Songs" to me anyday!

Thank you!My guess is that he was, deep down, a very sensitive person, and that he built himself an armour for emotional protection. Of course, personal sensitivity doesn't mean he's always sympathetic with others... And certainly he is unable to express what he really feels.
Lovely insight to a complex and private man. :)

Thank you, Sunny! :)
dearest cabepfir!!This diary fragments make your other story whole.A rare chance, to read ones mind. And how he can treat words. A wonder of a man. Skillful, soft, shy, woundable, lyric, well read indeed, a true poet, I can't find enough words for him *sigh*The last phrases were fun. He always mentions she is stupid. but alas, she loves him, what else can she be. oh no, not so little self confidence here, Sir!You are worth it!Oh, and thank you, that you inform your addicted reader about how Hermione solved the "which job should I choose" problem. His magical hands without the former magic. well, he doesn't need it to be magic, I daresay.Hope, he gets on with his books and learns to tell her exactly what he told his diary here. lovely lovely lovely.Thank you for this completion!

when I read the title of your original story, I always feared that it would be nothing more than that , just a summer. I am soo grateful that you gave them a lifetime. Thank you for being so kind to the readers nerves and their/my need for a good and lasting ending.

!No, there's no need to worry about sad endings in fanfictions from me! I cope with enough dead ends in real life to translate them into my little stories. Yes, I do hope they will open to each other one day; possibly after all the tension for the selection. Thanks again for following this fic and for you fabulous comments.
I like this romantic Snape and the peek we get into his thoughts. I also like the way you combine the various excerpts, quotes, poems and Yiddish. Thank you for this companion to Summer in York, it helped complete the story for me.

Thanks to you for the appreciation! :)
At least we know what happened! Thanks for the update. ^_^

Very welcome :) Thanks to you!
The three nightmares! *snort!* Then they turn into the three ulcers. I don't even think the Beatles had so many names! Too funny! I love, love, love this story and I'm so sad to see it end. The way you've written these characters, they seem like friends. And I'll miss them so as such. But, I hope Severus opens up one day, and lets Hermione see just what a hopeless Orthodox romantic he really is.
Response from cabepfir (Author of I've Always Thought You Were Stupid)
I hope that too ;) They only need a little more time. Thanks!
I read this without trepidation unlike A Summer in York, which I have yet to finish. This is a truly marvellous look into the inner depths of one Severus Snape. This rings very true because for all his outward aloofness, we do know that he is a deeply passionate man. Oh, if only Hermione can hear his inner monologue....Thank you for an amazing POV, it has been a real eye-opener and moving read!

Thank you so very much! Well, to say that Snape has some difficult experiences on his back is an understatement... but I picture Hermione, too, as an insecure, deep down. It takes sometimes a lot of time and understanding to show yourself to another person.
I wonder, if after they truly settled together, did he tell her how he really felt? Or perhaps let her read this diary? I would think she would be very complemented to see how he sees her compared with how she thinks he sees her. Thanks for writing this. I like the dichotomy between the inner and outer man. You can tell with Snape that you know that what you see is not what the truth is, but you never really know what the truth is. I like your version.

Thank you. Well, I have in my mind a scene which I left to the readers' imagination. In the last chapter of A Summer in York, Snape quotes the same line from The Song of Songs he quotes here (don't wake up love until it wants to arise), however Hermione doesn't recognise the quote and determines to ask Snape after her selection. So I guess that she did actually ask him elucidations about that line, and that finally Snape argumented a bit more about his feelings. Possibly that pushed Hermione, too, to overcome her insecurity about her own feelings. That's the untold part ;)
Ah, the truly beautiful soul that is Severus - so long hidden but loosed at last from it's dark prison. A treasure - thank you !!

Thank you very much!
Gorgeous! You stuck in a paragraph in stream of consciousness, and I thought it fit perfectly. This (epilogue? Sequel?) explains Snape so well. I didn't realize from the main story just how obsessive he is. He gives no hint until now how beautiful he finds Hermione, or how Romantic he is. (caps deliberate) Or the true depth of his love.
Finally, why was I not surprised Hermione took both jobs?
I will reread this every time I need a pick-me-up or renewed faith in romantic love.
Response from cabepfir (Author of I've Always Thought You Were Stupid)
Oh, thanks a lot! Sometimes it is very difficult, for sensitive people, to articulate their feelings to those they care for the most - and Snape wasn't certainly helped in that by his past experiences. It takes time, trust and mutual understanding.
Gorgeous. Exactly what I needed to complete the picture.
I enjoyed A Summer in York, but I ed I've Always Thought You Were Stupid.
For all its twisted stream-of-consciousness, I think I understood this one better. I certainly felt it more.
It is entrancing and, transporting and beautifully real. It's funny, enchanting, touching and frustrating, and it’s full of hope while tinged with despair. I can't think of a time where I read fear, love, confusion, hesitation, determination, doubt and assurance so genuinely depicted.Response from TeaOli (Reviewer)
I see I forgot a "jarring" (or "discomfitting"; I can't remember which I meant to use) after the "entrancing" there.

Thank you so much for this comment - it moved me! I loved writing this piece, and the fact that there was already a clear structure in A Summer in York gave me the freedom to skip descriptions and show directly Severus' stream of thoughts. Possibly, they are interesting also because Hermione knows so little of what was going on all along.
Okay, starting off with an apology for reading through A Summer in York without having posted a single review. I loved it through and through, loved the really wonderful angst between S&H. Loved that you put in enough humor to give just the right amount of relief to the more intense parts. Loved Hermione as bookbinder - I think that element adds a lot of interest to her librarian job. So anyway, after devouring York, I saw your note that you'd written this companion piece and decided to give it a read, even though sometimes so-called companion pieces end up being a disappointment.Well, let me tell you, you completely BLEW. ME. AWAY. with this take on Severus. I kept finding myself gripping my heart at the intensity of emotion he expressed, and at his amazing vulnerability, which he hid so assiduously from everyone, especially Hermione.Dang. I've waited a whole day to try and get my thoughts around all I want to express about how much this story moved me, and the words are failing me. This make "Summer" even better. It is a fabulous characterization of Severus. If I hadn't lost my heart to him years ago, this would certainly have done it! :)Anyway, thanks for writing and sharing these beautiful, beautiful stores with us. They've already gone on my favorites list, and I've been sending out links to friends today. Cheers!

The true blessing it so receive comments like this. It made my day. Thank you so much for reading and enjoying!
I spent the last few hours reading this and A summer in York and I have to say it has beyond captured my mind. Your way with words is indescribable, echoing you, it is magic. I adored every bit of emotion and soul stirring that occurred. A moment that simply took my breathe away is that paragraph where he speaks in no punctuation and the utter desperation and yearning is so powerful I could sob. I also love your illustrations, not knowing it was you who drew them, I went to your profile where you mentioned a deviantart. To my joyful surprise ( I am an illustration student) to find you an illustrator with such beautiful work in your gallery! You have such great talents in both words and imagery but most of all in storytelling. Thank you for sharing with the world.

Wow, the real magic is to receive such kind words as praise! I'm so glad this fic touched a chord with you. Thank you so much for your comment.
Wow! He should talk with her about how he feels! What a beautiful soul he has! Poor thing, with this kind of soul it must have been hell as a spy! I'm so glad he has her! Hope you'll continue their story because it's amaizing! Thank you!!!
