Chapter 3
Chapter 3 of 16
phoenixSeverus Snape, Deputy Headmaster, is beholden to no man with the Dark Lord finally vanquished and Dumbledore gone. He is free to choose the course that his life takes, to make friends, to finally know what it means to lead a normal life. How does he adapt to being able to experience this normality. Sequel to "Wounded" (the link is in the story). Rating is for later chapters.
Chapter 3
"It's all so confusing. I can remember being me, yet I can remember being her," said Eileen Snape.
"You will hold onto her memories for a very short time. Everything that happened since you became her, you will remember." He hugged her. "I'm sorry I had to do that, but it was the only way to keep you alive."
She returned the embrace. "I know." After a long silence, she asked, "Why did you do it? Why didn't you leave me that way?"
When he pulled away from her embrace, he regained his seat. Momentarily, he considered telling her that he almost had. He looked into her eyes. "I promised I wouldn't."
"What's to become of me now?"
He hadn't thought that far ahead. His reasons for restoring her memory had been partially selfish. "You may remain here and continue to be Irma Pince. Albus created her for you."
"What if that's not what I want?"
"What do you want?" he asked gently.
"I don't know. But I'm Eileen Snape, not Irma Pince."
"To everyone, you look like Irma Pince. Your appearance was altered so that no one would recognize you."
She reached for her face. "You altered my appearance?"
"Not me personally, but yes. There was no point in hiding you if someone would recognize you. I'm afraid that it can't be undone." He reached out and touched her in a tender fashion. "You can take some time off. Decide what you wish to do. If you wish to leave the school, I have a small savings that you can use to start a new life, though I would believe that Irma Pince would also have some savings."
"Yes, I do." She looked into her son's eyes and could tell that he was hiding something. "Something is bothering you, isn't it?" she asked gently.
"I always had a hard time keeping things from you. You were the only one that I have ever felt comfortable talking to." When he had been a boy, he had spent many long hours talking with his mother. That was something he had missed as he had become more enmeshed with the Death Eaters.
Her expression softened. "About what?" she asked gently.
"I have this friend. A woman."
A pleased smile crossed Eileen's face. "That's wonderful."
"There's more to it." He tried to decide which fact to start with. "She is the Healer that saved my life."
The smile faded. "Oh."
He knew exactly what she was thinking. It was the same thing that he had thought. That he was misreading the attention she had shown him as a caregiver. "It's not like that. I think she may feel something for me. We had dinner together last night and went for a walk after dinner. Before she left, she kissed me." He added quietly, as though hardly able to believe it happened, "On the lips."
"Ah, that's wonderful. Wait, I met her, didn't I? Aurelia MacLean?"
"Yes. She was with me this summer."
"Pretty young woman, isn't she?"
"Yes, she is." He paused before continuing. "It gets complicated. She was married to an Auror that was killed last year in the war."
"Hmmm. And you aren't sure that you are reading the signs correctly?"
"Precisely. It is possible that I have misread the signs."
"And you say she initiated the kiss?"
"Yes." It felt like he was being interrogated, and he wasn't used to divulging this much personal information.
"She could be giving you a signal that she is ready."
"That has occurred to me. Or she could just be making a friendly gesture. She has children, and she is very affectionate with them. What should I do?"
"A single woman doesn't kiss a single man on the lips to make a friendly gesture."
He stopped pacing and frowned at his mother, letting her know what he thought of that idea. "Her birthday is next week. I could gauge her emotions with a gift. But what sort of gift?"
"It depends on the message you wish to send her. Something useful would be the sort of gift a friend would give. If you want to be something more, give her something beautiful, though not entirely practical," Eileen offered.
Severus continued his restless pacing. "A trip to the village will be in order. Perhaps even Diagon Alley. I will think on this."
*******
Severus entered the library as it was closing. He glared at the students straggling behind, encouraging them to leave.
Once they were gone, Eileen said, "What can I do for you, Severus?"
"Would jewelry be a suitable gift?" He only had a few days until Aurelia's birthday and had yet to determine what he was going to give her.
She paused in reshelving books. "Are you serious?"
"You said I should give her something beautiful."
"Well, yes, but I was thinking along the lines of a scarf. Jewelry is a rather personal gift."
"Then you should have been more specific." He found his inability to understand women quite frustrating.
She couldn't help the small chuckle. "My dear Severus, you really know nothing of courting a woman, do you?"
"You would mock me?"
She put down her books and moved to his side. "I don't mock you, dear. I only realize how I failed you as a mother."
"You didn't fail me. It is I who failed you."
She stopped him from saying anything further. "You didn't. You protected me, and you did the right thing. Now, back to your dilemma. If you give her jewelry, you will be sending her a very serious signal about your future together. Are you serious?"
"Well I wouldn't be contemplating this if I wasn't, would I?"
"I suppose not." She had briefly met Aurelia during the summer, but hadn't paid attention to how she interacted with Severus. "You could always wait until Christmas," she offered.
"No. Best to find out now. I can send her birthday present by owl. I am currently expected there over Christmas." He wasn't sure he could give her the gift in person.
"You're afraid of rejection."
"Of course I am. Look at me. I must be insane. Perhaps you are right."
"What about you?"
"Honestly, Mother. Do you really need to ask that? I did inherit my looks from you," he said snidely.
After a momentary pause, Eileen replied, "Well, she seems to have overcome that fact. What are you thinking about giving her?"
"That's what I came to see you about. I have your sapphire necklace. It isn't too fancy."
Eileen thought about this for a few seconds. "I think you might be right. What are you going to say on the card?"
"The card?"
"You weren't just going to send her the necklace and a note that says `Happy Birthday, Severus,' were you?" She saw the look on his face. "You were. Oh, Severus, you have a lot to learn. You've honestly never courted a woman?"
"Would I be here if I had? Are you going to make fun of me or offer advice?"
"Tell her how you feel in the card. Perhaps you could quote a poem?" She watched him arch an eyebrow. "Or perhaps not. You need to write something that lets her know how you feel. Severus, I'm serious."
He sighed. "Why does it have to be so difficult?"
"Your other choice is to give it to her in person, but you've said you don't want to do that. I can help you write the card if you'd like."
"I'll do it on my own."
"Let me know how it turns out?" she called to his retreating back.
"I shall," he replied.

As full moon approached, Aurelia spent a great deal of time with Remus. He came by every evening to take his dose of Wolfsbane Potion. He only stayed long enough to eat dinner. She wanted to ask him if Severus had anything to do with the shortness of his visits, but thought better of it. She saw him grimace as he drank down the Potion. "The taste still isn't any better?"
"It's still bitter, but I don't think you can do anything about that. From what I understand, the Wolfsbane is quite bitter."
"Well, I'll see what I can do about that. Of course, that will be the level of refinement that gets worked on in the later stages."
"If it stops the transformations, I don't care what it tastes like. Do you really think you can stop them?"
"I hope so. Like I said before, we had to deal with some very interesting injuries during the war. Transformation injuries were quite common, and I'm hoping that some of what we came up with to treat those will help you out.
"I've cleared out the storage room for tomorrow."
"We could do this at the castle, my quarters there are quite secure," he offered.
She shook her head. "I'd rather do it here. I have a direct Floo connection to the wards at St. Mungo's. It's easier if something goes wrong. Sadly, we have a lot of experience dealing with lycanthropy. I feel better having access to that. And don't worry about the room; it's quite secure. The cellar is all stone, and I can vouch for the stoutness of the walls."
He didn't seem entirely comfortable with the arrangement. "I'll be here a little after three."
"Remus, don't worry. Like I said, I have lots of experience with werewolves. I know several restraining spells that will work in case the potion is not fully effective."
"All right. I should get going. I have some grading to do tonight."
She gave him a hug before letting him leave. "Make sure you get some rest tonight. I don't need you up all night and showing up exhausted. See you tomorrow."

Severus watched his fifth year class working on a particularly difficult potion. He was determined to weed out those that did not belong in his N.E.W.T. classes. Patrolling the aisles of the class, he cast his disapproving gaze left and right. Normally, he could count on the Ravenclaws to produce quality work, but not today. Their work was as abysmal as that of the Gryffindors.
Even though the class was not over, he knew that at least half of them would be failing for having bungled the instructions. While he had not seen any obvious mistakes from the rest of the class, he did not believe that more than three or four of the students would pass. Unsurprisingly, Julia was one of the students he thought would pass.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw one of the cauldrons bubbling over. He turned to watch and saw the hapless students trying to sop up the overflow. As they both hurried to clean up the mess, they tipped over the cauldron. "Ten points from Ravenclaw...each."
When the bell rang, he snapped, "Samples of your potions to the front." As the students filed up to his desk, he gave them a disapproving glare. He noticed that Julia was the last person to bring her sample to the desk. She lingered at his desk. "Is there something you need, Miss MacLean?"
Before she could speak, Adrian appeared in the doorway. "Professor Snape, a word if you please."
Julia quickly gathered her books and left the room.
"What can I do for you?"
"Is something bothering you?"
"Why would you ask that?"
"You seem to be deducting an unusual number of points."
"The awarding and deducting of points is up to a professor's discretion. I cannot help it if my students have been particularly troublesome this week."
"No. I don't suppose you can. My door is always open if there's anything you'd like to discuss. I think it would be more productive than taking it out on the students."
"Is that all?" Severus was quickly tiring of this conversation.
"Yes. I'll let you prepare for your next class."
Once Adrian left, Severus tried to determine why Aurelia had not yet replied to his gift. He knew that full moon was coming, but that should not have stopped her from acknowledging him. Unless of course she had been too intimidated by his gift. He would give her a few more days. If she didn't respond... He wasn't sure what he would do, but he had a few more days to make a decision.
*********
After eating dinner alone, Aurelia decided to go to the basement and check on her patient. She hadn't heard any noises coming from the cellar. In her mind, this was a good sign that the new variant of the potion was at least as effective as the old. Ideally, she was hoping to find a cure, but at a minimum, she hoped to refine the potion to make the transformations less physically taxing to improve recovery time.
She listened at the door for several seconds before unlocking it. With her wand at the ready, she slowly opened the door. The furry shape on the blankets looked up at her. "Well, this is interesting," she said as she observed Remus.
Normally, one could not tell a werewolf from a regular wolf, but it seemed as though her refinement to the Potion had changed that. While he by no means looked human, he did have human qualities. His nose and ears were not as pointed as they should have been, and his normally thick fur looked mangy.
Kneeling beside him, she began to examine him. He followed her directions as she examined his legs and teeth. His tail was also quite a bit shorter than it should have been. "This appears to be a step in the right direction. Did it hurt more than normal?" she asked. When he shook his head, she found that a good sign. "Did it hurt less?" Once again, he shook his head and she frowned. She had hoped to mitigate the pain, as that was something the others she had interviewed had complained about. "Sorry about that. I had hoped to make it more pleasant. I'll be back when the moon sets to let you out, and you can finish the night in the guest room."
Remus whimpered his thanks and curled back up in the nest of blankets.
She headed back upstairs and went to the library to make notes on her examination. The box on the corner of her desk teased her. She tried to ignore it until she could finish her work.
When she was done, she opened the box again and stared at the necklace inside. She had received the package three days ago, but had not yet found the time to write a letter to Severus thanking him for the gift. Of course, that assumed she knew what to say in that letter. Given all the work she had spent on the Wolfsbane the last three days, she hadn't had time to think about it.
Picking up the necklace and examining it, she was surprised that he had gotten her something so extravagant. Even a small sapphire like this must have set him back quite a bit. A part of her didn't feel right about keeping it; that she might be sending him the wrong signal. Of course, she wasn't even sure which signal she wanted to send to him.
Unfolding the piece of parchment that came with the necklace, she read it once again, hoping another reading would give her more clues to Severus' feelings.
Aurelia,
My best wishes to you for a very happy birthday. I regret that circumstances prevent me from delivering this gift in person. I hope that you enjoy it. If you are amenable, I would like to take you out to dinner Friday.
Sincerely,
Severus
It was late and she was tired. Perhaps tomorrow she would find the time to send him a letter.
**********
A week had passed since Severus had sent Aurelia her birthday present. He had spent the week prior to her birthday debating whether or not he should send it to her. He had sent her his mother's necklace, a beautiful gold and sapphire necklace, but not one so large as to be obscene. After all, she had reacted favorably to the thank you present he had given her, though that had been much more practical.
He thought about the kiss she had given him the last time they had been together. It had not been a passionate kiss, but he thought it was something more than a kiss between friends. Not only had it been on the lips, but her lips had lingered on his. He began to get lost in his memory of the kiss. From the flush of her cheeks, he had suspected that she had felt the same things he had.
Now, he began to wonder if he had been wrong. After all, it had only been about a year since Death Eaters had killed her husband. She may not be ready for a relationship. As he had very little experience in social graces, he began to think that his mother was correct, that his gift had been too forward, and that he had driven her away.
He had considered this before sending her the necklace. He had known that he was risking losing the only close friend he could ever remember having. Of course, she had not sent him an owl telling him not to stop by over the Christmas holidays, which started in a few days.
The post owls began swarming the Great Hall, and he looked up, eager to see if today was the day he was going to receive a reply, good or bad. She had never taken a week to respond to one of his letters, so he was prepared for her reply to be negative. If he did not receive a response today, he would ask Julia if her mother was well. That question should be benign enough not to draw the wrong sort of attention.
One of the last owls through the Great Hall deposited a letter in front of him. He gave the owl a strip of bacon and did his best not to tear into the letter. It wouldn't do for the students to see him acting like a hormonal teenager.
Dearest Severus,
My apologies for taking so long to thank you for the lovely necklace. It's been a very rough week. First, there was full moon, and then I was stuck at the hospital for the last four days working on a case. Thankfully, it's over and I finally have some time at home. Sadly, the number of poisonings has not gone down, they are still as popular as ever.
I'm utterly exhausted and don't feel like cooking. If you can get away from school, how about meeting me at the Three Broomsticks for dinner?
Again, thank you for the necklace. Though, it really is too much.
Yours,
Aurelia
He considered the letter for several moments, trying to determine if he had gone too far in giving it to her. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to go on.
The Headmaster leaned over and tried to sneak a peek at the letter. "How is your pen pal doing? It's been quite a while since you've received a letter."
Severus folded the letter. "Well, work has been busy." He had been very careful not to tell the Headmaster much about Aurelia. He preferred to keep his private life just that, private. "I have errands to run this evening and will not be attending dinner."
"Of course." The Headmaster gave Severus a smug smile.
Severus could see Lupin glancing down the table, trying to eavesdrop on the conversation. He was almost positive Lupin knew that Aurelia was his correspondent, but prudently, the werewolf had said nothing. With a sharp glare, he made Lupin return his attention to his breakfast.
A/N: I hope that you are enjoying this story. It's a fun one for me to work on, even it is one of the more difficult I have written. Zen Lady and nota have provided invaluable help as beta readers and people I can discuss ideas with.
There should be plenty of twists and turns for everyone. I know I have shocked myself a couple of times.
Additionally, if you are interested on more information about Eileen Snape, I have recently started posting After the Awakening, which will parallel parts of this story and show events from Eileen's point of view.

I am intrigued, so far so good. Well done!

Thank you. I'm glad that you have enjoyed it. I always appreciate it when folks tell me they have enjoyed my work, even if it takes me a long time to reply sometimes.

Thanks. That was one of my favorite scenes in the whole story. I just really couldn't resist. I think it a lot that so long after I wrote the story I knew exactly what you were talking about. LOL
Yes, the girls behaved just as I thought they would, Helen was pleased as punch and Julia was a typical difficult teenager. The only thing more difficult than a sulking sixteen year old is a sulking fifteen year old, so it could have been worse. It looks like politics and criminal justice in the wizarding world are no different that they are in the Muggle world. I hadn't even thought of a plea bargain, but it's so typical of Lucius.Things are winding down, but don't end the story until the baby is born, she finally has the right formula for Remus ( it looks like she's super close now), Julia finally comes round, and most of all what is brewing between Eileen and Adrian.I think they would make a great couple, and Adrian is even more fatherly towards him than Dumbledore was. Another plus is that Adrian is much lees manipulative than DD was. You hint that Adrian has a great sorrow in his past, will we find out what it is?
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thanks. I had a lot of fun with the different responses. After all, they are different people. Teenagers in general can be incredibly exasperating and Julia definitely fills this role.
Politics, what can I say? It doesn't seem to change no matter where you are. And we already know that Lucius has taken advantage of having money in the past.
Yup, the story is winding down. Probably one more chapter to wrap this installment all up. As for Eileen and Adrian, I am working on a story that is a companion piece to this one that will explore some events from her point of view and provide more backstory to what's going on at Hogwarts and about those two characters. :) And yes, Adrian is definitely less manipulative, something I'm sure Severus is happy for.
I love the twist at the end! Eileen /Elaine was right and now he is forced to make a decision. I'm betting on marriage. I bet Eileen/Elaine will be thrilled to find out she's going to be a grandmother.it really shouldn't be a hard choice for him, he wants her there with him. After her materninty leave there should be plenty of house elves who would volunteer to do day care and she could commute by Floo or apparate back and forth to work every day. The baby would also have it's sisters and grandmother nearby and they would be a complete family unit. This story must be nearing it's conclusion, is there any way I could once again inspire you to write another sequel? I will miss Aurealia, her girls and the new character you added to this story, Eileen. I know Severus would never be a Mr. Chips, but how about Powlett-Jones from Delderfield's To Serve Them All My Days? That would take him into the Headmastership and then to retirement.Since this update hasn't shown up on the site where I usually read it, I decided not to wait, to read and review it here.
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thanks for the head's up on the Elaine/Eileen. I felt like such an idiot. And neither or my betas caught it either. LOL We all saw what we wanted to see.
As for house elves, I think that would be a wonderful thing to have when dealing with an infant. LOL I think that Severus will realize what a good thing he has and be bright about making choices.
For a sequel, I am working out some plot ideas. It will be set a bit in the future, probably around 15-17 years. We'll see how it works out. I need to see if I can write something that will cover some key points of the intermediary years without getting bogged down.

I'm a really good proof reader, not much gets by me. I caught a real zinger in the Wayside Gardens newsletter this week. They sent the email on June 14 advertising a buy 3 get 2 free sale on roses (shipped bare roots); at the top of the page were 2 pictures, one of a rose bush in full bloom and beside it a picture of the plant with bare roots the way it would arrive at your address. The picture of the bare roots rose said this picture taken June 16, 2006. I sent them back an email asking how they got a picture from the future because I'd love to have a camera like that. My email was sent June 14, 2006 at 11:13 PM. I got a reply from them today thanking me for pointing out the error. It was easy to see how Eileen became mixed up with Elaine, it's easy to overlook when the lettering sequence is so similar. But the date on that picture in the newsletter should have stuck out like a sore thumb.
Oh, my! I was not expecting that one! Wow! Wonderful job. I really can't wait to see how Severus reacts to this. This story has me captivated. Thank you so much for sharing. I can't want for the next update. :)
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
LOL I don't think Severus was expecting it, either. Oh, how horribly he's likely to take this news. I love the little evil cliffhangers and this was a really good one form my standpoint. I am in the final revision phase of the next chapter and have even started on 14.
Hopefully, his reaction won't disappoint. I know I had fun imagining it.
How wonderful to find this updated! Must I hunt down and kill the plot bunnies attacking you or at least trap and release them later. So much is happening in this chapter - your unhurried pacing and attention to detail almost obscures that! Beautifully written as always!
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thank you very much, kari. Especially for the help on trapping the offending plot bunnies. I'm having a hard time picking a project to settle on right now. I need to whip them into shape. On the upside, I did have a huge brainstorn on the next chapter and I think it will be a wonderful twist.
Well done. Her anxiety is so believable and just when Severus is becomming courageous. Remus' timing is doing nothing to endear himself to Severus! Remus is the one I'm worried about falling into the love the doctor syndrome... Looking forward to more!
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thank you very much, kari. This is a scary time for Aurelia. Remus is such a sweetheart and I have a soft spot for him. Fortunately for Severus, Aurelia only sees Remus as a friend, though as you said, Remus should be careful not to get too attached to her.
“Contrary to popular belief, the world does not revolve around you.” Well said! Coded banging? Is Remus just changed enough to be wily and deadly? Thank goodness the next chapter is posted!!
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
I completely loved that line. Once I had it come to me, I knew I had to make sure to leave it in. Yes, you did get lucky that the next chapter is up.
What with her nervousness and mourning and his awkwardness and insecurities, you'll need all your skill to get them together.
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Yes, it will take a lot of skill won't it? Hopefully everyone will show the right amount of patience. :)
Feel sorry for the girls it must be hard to pull back from their previous relationship with Severus. The story has flowed nicely into the sequel. Once more I am going to enjoy the promise and a brilliant story to read. Best wishes
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
THanks,
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
. It will be tough for everyone to adjust, but I think they will. I hope you enjoy the rest of the story. Some chapters are proving more difficult than others to write. *sigh*
I've enjoyed this story and its predecessor very much. Aurelia and her daughters are very satisfying OCs. Part of me wanted some sort of an epilogue but I think that's more a harking back to storytelling convention -- really, it ends very nicely.
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thank you very much. :) There are times I do epilogues and times I don't. It really depends on how I think the story ends. Here, I thought it ended nicely. I do hope to revisit these characters in another future set fic once I knock out some other projects. :)
I hate to see the story end, is there any chance of inspiring you once more to continue with Severus, Aurelia and their children? Maybe a series of one shots as they grow up. I'd like to know if the have anymore children and what happens with Helen and Julia after they graduate; and maybe something about Marcus and his school days.I read and reviewed After the Awakening. Are you taking that beyond that day in the staff room when Eileen revealed her secret? If you do, then I hope there will be more of Severus & Aurelia in it. Eileen is Marcus's grandmother so it would fit in very naturally. I suspect there is something going on with Eileen and Adrian, but I don't think Severus would act in the bratty way that Julia did. I think he has matured emotionally now that he is a husband, father, and stepfather. Those hormonal mood swings taught him a lot of patience and diplomacy and he now seems to be a full fledged adult. Now about the baby'e name, I understand where the Aurelius came from, but if there was anything earlier in the story about the name Marcus I can't remember it. So where does the Marcus come from?
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
I have 3 other WIPs and a couple of one-shots I would like to pursue, but time permitting, I would like to revisit this view of the HP universe. :D
After the Awakening will probably be 4-5 chapters (I have to laugh at that since every other estimate I have made has turned out to be horribly off). I do think Severus would definitely be more mature than Julia. After all, he still feels some residual guilt over her situation. And this whole experience has definitely matured him.
Marcus Aurelius was the last of the great Roman emporers and philosophers. When he died, so did the Pax Romana, or so they say. While the movie Gladiator is not completely accurate, there is some truth, That was just happy fortune that Aurelius/Aurelia are fairly common names. Her name is the same as the mother of Julius Ceasar's mother.
Response from Trickie Woo (Reviewer)
I was looking at the family tree of Caesar Augustus's family Sunday night. I had come across something about Caligula and wanted to check it out.I loved 'I, Claudius' and it was on a web site about that mini series that I found the family trees. they were well documented and went into great detail. What little history of the Roman empire I learned about in school came from my 2 years of Latin in high school. I learned more from Robert Graves' books than from school. When we were on a Parish Holiday in Kent just west of Sandwich the first place they took us was Richborough Castle where the Roman occupying forces first landed in 43 AD and remained as their main port of entry during the occupation. In an area filled with history and many, many interesting places to see that turned out to be my favorite.I haven't been to Italy yet, but someday I'll get there and see the remnants of the Empire as well as the other place I have a strong desire to visit, Tuscany.
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
I had two years of Latin and then as one of my required humanities courses in college I took Roman History. Michael Grant's History of Rome is a great book on Roman history. While I've been to Italy, I never had near enough time. I had but one day in Rome, which is a travesty. I could spend weeks there. I love ancient Rome and Greece and hope to spend more time studying that area.
He's learning fast how volatile pregnant women can be, after the baby is born the experience will make it much easier to deal with PMS. He's learning the magic words are yes dear, I was wrong, and I was selfish. He hasn't yet learned my favorites though, I brought you chocolate, have some chocolate, and would you like to go out and get some chocolate. When I was pregnant with my son my morning sickness was 24/7 for the first 5 months, the only thing I could eat that would stay down was chocolate. It's funny, isn't it how you can get sick of eating almost anything, but chocolate never loses it's taste or appeal. I lost 30 lbs. during those 5 months and when he was born I weighed the same as I did when I got pregnant. When I left the hospital I weighed just a little more (15 lbs.) than I wanted to weigh. His adjustment to marriage would have been easier if they had time for a shakedown cruise before she got pregnant, but that can't be helped. Besides, if it hadn't happened they wouldn't be married yet. He would still be courting her and getting up the nerve to propose.I had thought about asking you to have Eileen talk to Julia, but no one but Severus, Aurelia and possibly Adrian knows who she really is, do they? Or is her identity common knowledge since the wedding when she was so obviously close to both of them. Maybe Severus could talk to her, he has around 25 years of experience in dealing with petulant (I had to ge that word in there) adolescents and it's not him, personally, that bothers her. Although he was never known for tact and diplomacy in dealing with any of them. But he always did take his responsibility to the Slytherins very seriously and took good care of them. Julia has to come round sooner or later, maybe it will be the new baby that will draw her in towards her mother.

LOL yes, poor Severus really has a steep learning curve here when it comes to women, doesn't he? He's not exactly starting it at the most advantageous point, but he is learning. Personally, I couldn't imagine losing 30 lbs over that short a time, it must have been miserable for you.
At this point, I would actually have to look it up. I can't recall if anything wsa mentioned at the wedding or not to the girls. I don't think they do know. As for the petulant teenager, you have read the next chapter, so you know what happens. :D
I'm going to try again, I hope the whole shebang doesn't collapse when I try to post it this time.It was amazing how far he managed to regress in his emotional development at the beginning of the chapter. It was as if he took 10 steps backward for every step he had advanced before. It just goes to show that every boy can benefit from a good chewing out from his mother. And when he actually listened to her, look what it got him, make up sex and that's always the best kind. Plus he got a fiancee, a wedding to plan, a baby to get ready for, and she told him she would come to Hogwarts to live with him. Maybe the chapter should be titled 'Mother Knows Best'.I have one small worry, how will Julia respond to her mother's news when she finds out about the baby? The first and second years at Hogwarts seem to be more innocent that Muggle children. Helen probably doesn't know the mechanics of sex, or of pregnancy, or the signifigance of counting to nine. Since she already tried to set them up she will be pleased at the news. Julia is past that stage and at the age when teenagers think they are much smarter that any adult. She will probably be highly embarrassed at the thought of her mother having sex and even more embarassed and highly outraged that her mother became pregnant out of wedlock. The wizarding world can be very judgemental and moralistic, so I can just imagine the reaction of a teenager from that background to her mother's news.

Thank you very much for your wonderful review, especially since you got hit by the database hiccup (I try to copy all long replies before submitting, but I still forget LOL)
Severus did take a big step(s) back, didn't he? Fear can do some amazing things to you, can't it? You know what, 'Mother Knows Best' would make a great title for this one. LOL If only he'd listened to her sooner.
I have been working on the next chapter and you will see reactions. This next chapter, for various reasons, has been one of the harder I've had to write. I won't say anymore for risk of ruining the surprise. :)
Hooray for this update! Now there's a sign of true love, Severus taking Harry along. Aurelia's captivity was very believable, espcially her alternating thoughts of capitulation, rescue and strength.

Thanks, kari. LOL Working with Harry would be a sign of true love, wouldn't it. LOL I'm glad you found her captivity believable. It's always a hard thing to do. In this case moreso since Aurelia isn't as much like me as some of my other OCs have been. I'm just glad that her captivity is over.
I'm thrilled to find an update to your wonderful story. I jealously watched as your other stories were updated here on PP... finally, this one :) Quite a cliffhanger, I'm hoping this has nothing to do with Malfoy. Anxiously awaiting the next chapter!
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thanks, kari. As for the other one getting updates, it's been done for a while now, I'm just catching up on posting here.
As for why Aurelia didn't make dinner, that will be revealed in the next chapter. Patience, my friend.
Well, there are indeed a few twists here! It would have seemed more natural to me to have Elaine's awakening back story. It felt too rushed here, what with the new job, identity and face. But it is nice that he will have someone with his best interests at heart to talk to. And I like the clever idea of hiding someone in Hogwarts as a new staff member. I don't think I've seen that done before. Also, how ironic and fun that Adrian would leave her door open for Severus!

In hindsight more backstory would be good. I might be convinced to do a little filler fic for this when I finish one of my projects. I wanted this story to focus on the story of Severus and Aurelia. I have to thank one of my betas of another story for that twist, though I wish I could take credit for that. I'm glad you are enjoying this. :)
You've doen an excellent job of capturing Severus' paranoia and awkwardness.
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thanks, kari. Severus is a lot of fun to work with and I really have to thank Zen Lady for keeping me straight when I try to take him too far of his course. I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.
I'm so glad to find this sequel up so quickly. Helen a Slytherin, lol. I'm enjoying this more mature look at what happens after the war. In many ways harder to write I think...
Response from phoenix (Author of Beholden To No Man)
Thanks, kari. You got lucky on this. I actually started posting Wounded becasue I knew this sequel was getting ready for posting. You will see more about Helen and her Slytherin stripes in the future. :) The hardest part about this one was that I killed off so many from the pervious world and the rebuilding involved quite a bit of creation on my part, though that was fun. I hope you enjoy the rest of it.
