In a dystopian AU where the Dark Lord triumphs and Severus Snape can claim any reward he wishes as one of the chosen 'Faithful,' all Severus longs for is a life of peaceful seclusion – and an heir. But it seems that he might have to sacrifice one for the other when he petitions the Ministry for a hand-witch to produce a child and is presented with one of his former students.

Reviews for The Long Way Down
Very nice. I would like too much if you decided to write some more chapter before the end, but I can understand why you didn't. Sometimes the story decides for itself.Thank you for your lovely story that helped me when I was utterly bored.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Actually, this story wanted to keep writing itself -- I had to put my foot down and say, "NO!" hehe I started out with a very clear vision of what I wanted to accomplished with this story, and I feel I reached my goal. Maybe the way I chose to end the story will make more sense if you read Margarette Atwood's novel 'The Handmaid's Tale,' which inspired this story in the first place. It's a great read, and I highly recommend it. :)Thank you for reading and reviewing my story; I'm glad you found it entertaining. :)
That was brilliant. I'm so pleased that it took them awhile to get together. Their love will mean more if it isn't an instant thing. Does that make sense? Really wonderful story. Have you ever read Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale"? I think you must have. It's a wonderful book, and you've done a great job of hitting the plot points but never re-hashing, IMO.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you; I'm glad you liked it! :)Yes, the premise and many of the elements in this story were inspired by Atwood's novel 'The Handmaid's Tale' -- one of my favorite books. (There's now an author's note at the beginning of this story giving Atwood credit). I guess this was a bit of a crossover, in the sense that it takes place in Atwood's world, but with magical elements and HP characters. I tried to write it in a way that someone who had not read 'The Handmaid's Tale' could still follow the story-line, but anyone who is familiar with Atwood's novel would recognize the setting and her dystopian elements. I obviously deviated from Atwood's model with the epilogue, but I still wanted to pay homage to the original premise, which is why I kept the emphasis on the sociopolitical ramifications of Voldemort's reign, rather than the romantic outcome of the story. Anyway, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful review -- I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the story. :)
Thank you so much for this wondeful story I really enjoyed it
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
You're very welcome. Thank you for reading it! :)
bravo! great story, a little sad to see it end.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you! I'm already working on my next one, so keep an eye out for it. P. S. If you add me to your favorite authors folder, you'll be notified when the first chapter posts. :)
yay, an updated chapter! still a 10 and i'll be looking for that last chapter you already uploaded already. i love that he tried to steal her daughter for her :)
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you; I'm glad you're still enjoying the story. I like unexpected twists in stories, and I thought it would it be appropriate for this one that Snape would get captured not by Draco betraying him, (as would be expected), but because his heart over-rode his good judgment -- even the most practical people do crazy things when they are in love -- so I'm glad you liked it too. Final chapter coming very soon; hang in there!
Yes, I knew Hermione would not sit and wait. A very exciting coup.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. :)
I'm afraid I haven't left any reviews before, and I apologise for that. I've tried, when I read - or I'd better say swallowed in one go - most of your story back in December, but a computer crash 'ate' my comment and then I was too worried with related issues to come back and try to recreate the mood and rewrite everything, shame on me!I'll try to thank you now, for blending the Handmaid's Tale, a book I cherish, with a beautiful rendering of our beloved characters.I don't usually care much for Hermione involved with children and pregnancies, but your AU made everything very believable and IC, including her slow reappropriation of identity after years of segregation/indoctrination.Your Snape is wonderful. So private, cautious and clever in his cold persona, yet so passionate and unselfish in his actions.I love the slow building up and unveiling of feelings, and the way you draw a world of 3-D secondary characters surrounding them; a 'special mention' for the Malfoys, for Remus, and for a Ginny torn between friendship and loyalty to Harry and her family, and finally able to live with both in this chapter (YAY for the girls coming to rescue, and for an understanding Molly and a supportive Charlie - there is so much packed in that short exchange!)The insurgence of an hyper-fundamentalist current is a great idea; it made me feel some slight sympathy for the hateful despot; who would have thought that Voldemort wasn't the darkest of possible darks? Yet it is very believable - and a satisfactory application of retaliation law *g*Besides, I'm happy to realise that I'm not the only one to feel threatened and scared by characters like Umbridge or Fudge, more perhaps than by outspoken evil lords like Voldemort :DDDI'm sorry I don't have much to say about the battle scenes, but that they must have been very good, since I was in such a turmoil that I tried to outrun Hermione in her search for Severus and paid little attention to what was happening all around ;) I promise I'll re-read it... after finding out what happens with Snape in next chapter! Good thing I've gone through other reviews before writing mine. I'm breathing better right now (or at least I'm hopefully clutching to hints)All in all, thank you very, very much for sharing.Lela (aka

lele on LJ)Edited to add: the description of Hermione's realisation that the "hope" bit of parchment she had clung to during her hardship came from Snape made me *swoon*
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
You might not have left any other reviews, but you sure made up for it with this one -- I'm very touched and flattered by your words of praise. I'm not big on writing stories that involve pregnancy and children either, and I couldn't even tell you why I did it in this one, except that that's the way the story presented itself to me, and it refused to be written any other way. This is probably the only story I'll write in which Hermione is pregnant. Even though Hermione and Snape are the main focus of this story, I like exploring different themes, and JKR gave me a lot to work with when she created so many diverse and interesting characters. It's been great fun exploring each of their personalities and their relationships. The idea that Voldemort should be betrayed by those closest to him, and the same people who carried him to power in the first place, was inspired by the most famous coup d'etat in history -- the assasination of Julius Caesar, (whose death, of course, came about because his supporters felt betrayed by what they perceived as their leader commingling with their former enemies). I'm not ashamed to say that there're actually very few original ideas in this story! hehe. Don't worry about racing through the battle scenes; I'm sure it was all a blur for Hermione as well! hehe I sincerely hope that you're pleased with the outcome of the story, and thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and write such a thoughtful review. :)
*deep sigh of relief* I thought for a moment that everything would be lost. My hands are stilll shaking with the deep feelings you inspire in me: fear, hope, despair and then hope again, until finally relief and happiness but tinged with a little doubt. Will he live? I hope so much for it. Thank you for another absolutely amazing chapter. I shall wait the epilogue fervently.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you. Yes this chapter was a bit of a roller-coster ride. Epilogue should be coming very, very soon, most likely some time tomorrow. I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of the story. :)
This cliff I am standing on is starting to crumble. When you warned of a character death I hope you intended it to be Umbridge.I don't like to ask for certain outcomes so I won't because it takes away from the creative journey the author is taking us on. One that we all agreed to go on without knowing the final destination, thats the beauty of story telling its always an adventure. There's only one chapter left and its bound to be an intense one. Time to go to the store and stock up on tissues. Thanks Alley for a wonderful update.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
The characters' deaths warning was general, for all the deaths that happened before and during the story, (I mean, let's face it, it's hard to find a chapter in this story that doesn't allude to someone dying!)Hope you have your tissues ready, even if you probably won't need them, because the final chapter just posted, (I'm a little behind responding to reviews, but that's because I'm already working on my next story. I know, excuses, excuses. hehe). I hope the ending pleases. Thank you so much for reading my story! :)

Phew, quite the changes and events in this chapters! I'm really impressed about your ability to build up suspense and write action, I know only too well that this is all but easy.
Hermione's and Ginny's extra adventure is only too understandable, and I'm very happy that they did indeed find Snape alive. And do sincerely hope that it's not just for the moment being and a good cliffhanger. Or could you be so cruel? *gnaws nails*
Author's Response: I don't have a cruel, or even mean, bone in my body! I really wish that I could have uploaded both this chapter and the epilogue in one file, so that I wouldn't have left everyone hanging like this.
The epilogue is almost to the top of the queue, so it should be posted very soon! I hope you're not dissapointed by it.
Thank you for reading and reviewing my story.
oh, what an action-packed chapter! Please let him not be dead...
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you! I really enjoy writing action scenes. Are you asking me not to let him be dead, or are you praying to the Muses? ;)Thank you again, for reading and for reviewing.
Thank goodness, someone finally took out that toad Umbridge, even if she did serve a purpose for the downfall of Voldermort. ~guess I do hold a grudge, hmm~ Anyway, this has been a great story and I'm holding out for a happy ending. Well done!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you. The ending/final chapter is almost to the top of the queue, so you won't have to hold out much longer! ;)
this is the very best fanfiction i've read in a long time, possibly ever. i'm really impressed, and this chapter was particularly good. umbridge screaming that there shall be no running in the halls was perfectly along canon lines [not that i'm a stickler for canon], yet ever so much for horrifying than anything rowling wrote. lucius is perfect. i only hope he's spared, but at this point it's probably better for the story if he's not [i trust you to make the proper decision, however]. snape and hermione are both likeable and interesting, though hermione's an idiot for going into a fight pregnant. the pacing is solid, the storyline doesn't fall into the ridiculous or over-sentimental. bah! i love it. sorry if the review rambles. you've done a great job and i look forward to the rest.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Awww, thank you so much, dear. I sincerly hope you feel the same way after reading the ending. *gulp* I worked very hard on this story; at times it felt like my brain was going to explode with all those characters, twists and turns, and nuances! hehe So it's a really good feeling to hear that my effort is appreciated. Thank you again!
How could Hermione know that her daughter is safe? Or was she just saying that to reassure Severus? I found myself tearing up when I read that he was trying to get her daughter back. Im all worried about how this is going to end. )))sniffle.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
What she meant by 'safe' was that the girl was not injured during his attempt to rescue her and subsequent scuffle with Bella. (He was holding the girl when Bella first confronted him, so I think that would be his concern). Hermione knows this because she heard Voldemort say that the Crispuses were 'most grateful' that Bella 'rescued' the girl, so the girl is with the Crispuses, and they wouldn't be grateful to have her back if they didn't want/love her. The child had been safe with the Crispuses up to that point. She looked healthy and happy in the photograph that Hermione got from Madam Crispus, so all indications are that they have taken good care of her; I didn't see any reason for Hermione to assume that that would change now. And with the radical pure-bloods defeated, there's no longer a threat of mass child slaughter -- so she is safe, just not with Hermione. :)I think you'll like the ending :) The next chapter is already in the queue, so it won't be much longer until you find out how it all turns out.
Oh I hate that they parted in anger. I think Hermione was being unreasonable. They brought her into the fold when they could. I hope Remus' story will give her something to think about.ZOMG did Draco turn on Severus???
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
LOL I love that emoticon! Hermione was not as much angry as she was hurt, and she didn't want him to see just how hurt she was -- she could understand why they couldn't rescue her right away, but it still hurts to learn that your friends no longer trust you even though you did nothing to betray their trust, and in all fairness, Severus wasn't completely truthful with her either. Anyway, next chapter is already posted, so read on! :)
Oh, please don't let him die. Let Hermione have a little happiness.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
The die has already been cast, my dear -- final chapter is already written and in the queue. But I think you'll be happy with the ending. :)Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my story!
I really love the story, but how evil of you to leave us off here!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
I really am sorry. My initial intention was to upload this chapter and the following epilogue as one document, but that would have put me over the 10,000 words per chapter limit, so I had to upload them as two separate chapters. :(But the next one is in the queue, so it shouldn't be much longer. Thank you for reviewing!
He HAS to be ok! please don't let him be dead! anyways, i can't wait to read more.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
You'll be reading more soon -- the next (and final) chapter is in the queue! :)
Oh, wonderful! I'm looking forward to the next chapter. Will our beloved Severus survive? I do hope so!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you! Next chapter should be posted soon -- it's already in the queue. I'm glad you liked this one. Thank you so much for your review. :)
That was an intense chapter. I thought maybe Snape wouldn't make it. Can't wait to find out what happens next? Will Hermione get her daughter back? I'm a happy ending kind of girl, so I'm crossing my fingers for one.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Well, keep those fingers crossed! You don't have much longer to wait; the last chapter is the queue awaiting validation. :)Thank you for reviewing.
Well done! Lucius getting Umbridge was the best!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Ha! That's right -- don't mess with Lucius Malfoy! Thank you for reading and reviewing my story!
I am so glad that Ginny made ammends with Hermione. She really didn't think before spouting off to Harry. Did I miss what happened to Hermione's daughter? Was she portkeyed away?
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Snape didn't get the chance to rescue Hermione's daughter. Voldemort tells Lucius that 'Bella did the right thing by rescuing the child and summoning the soldiers' and that 'the Crispuses are most grateful,' meaning Bella managed to take the child away from Snape and the child is still with the Crispuses. :(Thank you for reading and reviewing!
Well we now know that they love each other. "Don't go. Please stay with me, only for a little while." - made me want to cry. I'm sure Hermione will look after him. Look forward to more.

Hum, that will depend on the outcome of the story, which I don't want to give away right now, but I'll explain it after the final chapter is posted -- just remind me if I forget. :)
Please, please, don't let him die! Livvy
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Alright, I won't. ;)Thank you for reviewing; I'm glad you're still following this story!
oh blimey... this story has so many twists and turns I can feel my heart beating out of my chest! please don't let him die though... right?
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
There's only one more chapter left, and it's already in the queue, so you'll find out Snape's fate very soon. Thank you for reading and reviewing.
