In a dystopian AU where the Dark Lord triumphs and Severus Snape can claim any reward he wishes as one of the chosen 'Faithful,' all Severus longs for is a life of peaceful seclusion – and an heir. But it seems that he might have to sacrifice one for the other when he petitions the Ministry for a hand-witch to produce a child and is presented with one of his former students.

Reviews for The Long Way Down
Talk about dying and going to hell, Hermione's situation is sad. Can't wait for the next chapter to learn more, such as is Snape really in Voldermort's corner or is he doing what he has to in order to survive.

I know; it is a pretty grim scenario. I would say that Hermione's future hinges on that very question -- whose side is Snape really on? I know the answer, but I'm not telling -- yet! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing.

Well, then. I'm curious to see how they go about the conception. Interesting.Livvy

Oh, I think Hermione is curious about that too, and perhaps not as optimistic about it as we would be! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing.

Snape's house is fantastic. It really speaks of the level of paranoia that he lives with on a daily basis. I wonder what Hermione will do to start chipping away at that shell.

Thank you for reviewing; I'm glad you like Snape's house! He does seem a bit overcautious, doesn't he? But then again, it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you, is it? ;)

I came here from HGSSQuiz on livejournal.
I loved your amazing story a lot. Thanks for sharing.
The second I read "hand witches" I new what this story was about! Really well written completely beleivable and deep! Was it my imagination or did I read a line based on " Last of the Mohicans"?
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful feedback. :-) It is very possible that there's a part of the story that references "Last of the Mohicans," since I stole ... I mean borrowed from a lot of different sources for this story, and I've read the book. Unfortunately, I wrote this story a long time ago and can't remember the details and all the sources.I do rember that my description of the "Valley of Lost Souls" was inspired by a Frida Kahlo painting called "Portrait of Luther Burbank, where she depicts a friend of hers who had recently passed away as a hybrid half-man, half-tree, it's roots fed by its own corpse. The planned coup d'etat on Voldemort by his former followers is loosely based on Julius Caesar's assasination and the conflit that led to it. If you notice, in the scene where Lucius is confronting Draco about joining the new, subversive group of pure-bloods, Draco is wearing purple robes, which is a color that only the elite was allowed to wear in ancient Rome, since purple dye was extremely rare and expensive back then. There are all kinds of little details like that scattered throughout the story, mostly for my own amusement, I guess. :-)Again, thank you for your thoughtful feedback. Sorry I couldn't answer your question.

I haven't read "The Handmaid's Tale", but with my studies in History (and the backgrounds of 'comfort women' who are victims of conflict/war), so much of this rang true.
This was really well-written and I really enjoyed it. (And am very glad things worked out in the end.) ;) Thank you for sharing!
::cheers:: Bravo. I read through this frantically over the last couple days and loved every minute of it. This definitely had a different take on things than a lot of fanfiction so it made it all the more exciting. :)

Thank you for reading and reviewing my story! I just found a bunch of reviews I didn't know I had (including yours), and even though it's been a while, I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you reading and taking the time to review my story. :)
I loved the story! Great job!

Thank you! I missed reponding to a few dozen reviews a while back and I just found them. Even though it's been a while, I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I appreciate you reading and reviewing my story.
I found this so well written and so heartwrenching. I was, at one point, so worried it was going to end sadly, with Severus's death. It would have well fit the bleak dystopia you created. But then I was so relieved that not only did he live, but that you gave them a love story and just enough of a puzzle that we can connect our own dots. Thanks so much.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed this story and found it well written. I could have gone either way with the ending, and it would have worked, but I guess deep down I'm just a romantic no matter how much I try to deny it! *grin*Thank you again, for reading and for reviewing. :)
I must say, that was incredibly well written and I enjoyed it a great deal. I just gobbled the entire thing up in one fell swoop. It was fabulous!

It's been a while since I read "A Handmaid's Tale" but your story brought the emotions all rushing back: the horror and dismay, and yet the since of underlying resistance and hope for the future.I am so glad that this story had a happy ending, and I must say, it was beautifully written and extremely poignant. Thank you for a wonderful piece of fiction!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and leave a review. I must say that I'm pretty satisfied with the ending I chose, even though I could have gone a few other different ways, and it still would have worked. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
What a lovely ending to a great story! I loved how you moved forward in time and made your point without too much sentimentality. It was enough - the end and the epilogue - and I enjoyed each and every moment! Thank you for sharing this tale with the rest of us! I would give it more stars if I could!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
I'm grateful for the opportunity to have shared this story, and thrilled to know that others enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you for reading and for reviewing. :)
Great tale!

Spectacular!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you. I'm glad you think so.
Sigh ... A really good story. I love the phrase: "it makes no difference how a love story begins – only how it ends." Romance is not dead -- you have revived it with your story. Congratulations on a job well done!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the story, and that you love the ending. Hard to believe I'm a romantic, huh?
Nice, matching Camilla and Gavril!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you. I thought that would be a cute detail. :)
Hope they haven't locked up Lucius.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Lucius did get locked up, but he probably payed off everyone at Azkaban and had a relatively easy time there, so no need to feel too badly for him. hehe
Lucius could well be redeemable.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
To a point... only to a point.
Poor, brave, Neville.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
I know. I don't think I'll ever get over that one. It's not often that I taumatize myself with my own writting, but this time I did. :(
Oh, goodie. We have reached a little understanding. :)
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Yay.
Any enemy of my enemy is my friend, perhaps?
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
I love that saying, although I've found it doesn't always work out too well! Thank you for reading and reviewing.
She always wants to know...
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Of course she wants to know -- she's Hermione! :)Thank you for reading and reviewing.
