In a dystopian AU where the Dark Lord triumphs and Severus Snape can claim any reward he wishes as one of the chosen 'Faithful,' all Severus longs for is a life of peaceful seclusion – and an heir. But it seems that he might have to sacrifice one for the other when he petitions the Ministry for a hand-witch to produce a child and is presented with one of his former students.

Is it wrong to say I need more, or that I need you to provide me with more? Such emotion, I thank you for that.

This is certainly a book combination I never would have thought of. It is intriguing though

The Handmaid's Tale has always been one of my favorite books, so when I decided to write an HP story set in a dystopian world, the world depicted in The Handmaid's Tale was just the logical choice for me :)Thank you for your review.

WHat a great chapter! I'm heartbroken, though, that Hermione has never seen her daughter. Please please please let her get the child back! And why is Snape accusing her of not giving him a child? Is he giving her potions so she CAN'T get pregnant and he can keep her? She's had sex with him whenever he wished, so how can he accuse her of anything? Hmmm...Please update soon; this is my favorite HG/SS story!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you; I'm so touched to hear you say that this is your favorite HG/SS story, especially because there's some really great ones out there, and I'm such a novice at writing this pairing! :)Snape is not so much accusing Hermione of not giving him a child, as much as he is accusing her of being unwilling to give him a child, since she accused him of forcing her. He is being insensitive in the sense that to him it's just a matter of 'I do for you, you should be willing to do for me.' I purposely wrote him that way, only because Snape has never struck me as the sensitive type (although I know there are some who would disagree with me). I'm thinking I should have made that line of dialoge a little bit more clear. Thank you so much for reading my story and for the lovely review. The next chapter is in the queue. :)

This is such a thoughtful, interesting look at how a Wizarding "Handmaid's Tale" might look. I love dystopia fics (and I loved Atwood's novel) so your story has a built-in appeal for me. But I also like the devices that are your own additions, like the strange shifting corridors of the house, and the doors that guard Snape's lab. I also like the subtle ways in which you show human emotion and need for closeness at war with the inhuman situation. Looking forward to more!

Thank you so much for your kind praise. I've tried very hard to keep the story focused on Hermione and Severus, and grounded in the HP universe, while conveying the somber and desperate mood of Atwood's novel. I'm glad this story is working for you. The next chapter is at the top of the queue, so it should be posted very soon. Thanks again for reading and reviewing. :)

It seems that Severus wants Hermione to appreciate him... he wants her to want him.

I had tears in my eyes when I was reading this. Imagine having a child that you'll never get to meet!Sometimes Snape is a complete bastard, but at other times he can be just the opposite. This chapter had a little bit of both (that's the way I like it!). He's such a complex character and that's what makes him so interesting to read and write.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
The scene with the photograph was a strange one for me to write, because I didn't envision it to be so heartwrenching when I first conceived it, but I was wrting it, my eyes started to water -- it's not often that I make myself cry with my own writing. I agree that Snape is a very interesting character, and it in this story I'm striving to show the full range of his complexity -- the good, the bad and the ugly -- because I love everything about him! (Sorry, fangirl moment there! hehe)Thank you for choosing to read my story, and for your kind review. :)

I have only just caught up with the last few chapters and my goodness, my stomach is turning and chills travel over my body at the world you have brilliantly created. I also like your characterisation - I feel they are quite true, but I hate how they are broken and constrained in this new Wizarding World... especially Hermione. This last chapter is quite heartbreaking. Looking forward to more.Cheers.

I'm glad you're enjoying the story. Next chapter is in the queue now! :)Thanks again for reading my story and taking the time to review it.

Oh man, this was a good chapter. I liked the honest emotions of both of them during their disagreement. I was surprised that Snape went to the trouble to get a picture of Hermione's baby for her. He seems true to form, the ways he's trying to please her. It would be so hurtful to bear and have to leave a child. I'm also surprised Severus wants a child. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Thank you; I'm glad you're enjoying this story. I figured it would be a right time for Snape to think about havign a child; the war has been over for seven years, he's semi-retired, financially secure and his 40's. In any case, I'm glad he did because it was his desire to have a child that set the whole story in motion! ;)Thanks again for reading and reviewing my story.

oh, my....... Severus is getting himself in very hot water with Death Eaters! I believe Hermione knows that he is endangering himself, but not to the extent. but why does he believe she is withholding a child from him if he has only been "with" her a few times?? here's hoping you post the next chapter soon. thank you for updating!!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Yes, it does sound like Snape is getting himself into trouble, but tha's ok; he can take care of himself. ;)I didn't mean that line of dialogue to sound like Snape was accusing Hermione of witholding a child from him (which she really has no way of doing). His statement was a reaction to her accusing him of forcing her to have a child for him, when he feels that she's being well compensated for her trouble. The 'you would deny me' is hypothetical, as in 'if you could deny me, you would, even after all I've done for you.' I'm thinking I might have to rewrite that line of dialogue, or add something to the next chapter to explain it. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my story. The next chapter should be up very soon (I'm just waiting on my beta to send it back to me).

So much pain... I wonder what Severus is trying to get out of making her learn to protect herself and to have a reason to bear another child... Love the chapter. Great plot (very depresing, but great!) Hope to read more soon.

I'm looking forward to the next chapter as well. I feel bad for Hermione having to see the photo. I can only imagine how she must feel, being a mom myself. I hope that even though she's a hand-witch, there's a bit of happiness in store for her and that the ugly toad Umbridge will leave her in peace.

This story has been so heartbreaking so far. She has lost everybody she loves and is treated like a slave. She has lost all her hopes and dreams its a wonder she has not gone insane. I really hope this story has a fairly happy ending. I would hate invest more emotion into it and have it leaving me devistated.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
I realize this is a very emotional story, and I found this chapter particularly heartwrenching. I don't think I'm giving away anything about the story if I tell you that it will have a 'fairly happy ending,' (although not of the fluffy, ever-after variety), since Romance is one of its genres. I wouldn't have placed it under Romance unless I planned some kind of conciliation between the two main characters at the end -- I think that to do so would have been terribly unfair to the readers. I agree with you that if Hermione had lost all her hopes and dreams, she would have gone insane by now. The way I see it, the fact that she has not yet given in to despair (or to Snape) says that she has not lost all hope yet -- she is just trying to figure out what shape that hope will take. I think this becomes more clear in the next chapter, which I promise to post as soon as I get it back from my beta. :)Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my story :)
Response from geomancer (Reviewer)
Thanks for that, I am actually glad that it will not have a fluffy ending (how could it really?) I will settle in and enjoy it from here on.

Great new chapter! Severus's motives seem to get more and more difficult to guess, and more and more interesting, too. What does he do all day long? Who is he, now, really? This gets even more complicated by the fact that your universe is so extremely AU that guessing gets difficult. Truly good work, the way you weave your story strands!
Author's Response: Thank you! Snape is a very complicated character, which is one of the reasons I love him so much in canon (or at least I did until book 7, where he turned a little bit too two-dimensional for my taste).
You're right, this story is very AU, but it's canon-compliant up to HBP, so it can pretty much be taken for granted that any events prior to that point happened as they did in canon -- it's the seven years between the end of HBP and the start of this story that are the big unknown. I'm not sure if that helps.
Again, thank you so much for your positive and encouraging reviews.
Ack! I'm even more confused. But even more intrigued at the same time. Snape says she doesn't give him a child as if she is somehow holding out on him, yet he only visited her twice during the four times he was allowed to do so. He seemed genuinely 'interested' when she wasn't in her fertile period, but if all he wants is a child then why would he be interested in her during any other time? Ugh... I can't wait until Hermione, and in turn I, find out more of what it is that Snape is thinking in all this.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Hi! I had to think about a way to respond to your review without getting into things that will come up later in the story. I think that if you read the passage again, you'll see that Snape is not accusing Hermione of witholding a child from him (there's really no way for Hermione to do that under her circumstances and that's precisely her point). What sets Snape off is her accusation that he is holding her against her will and forcing her to give him a child, because he sees it differently. It doesn't help that in the previous line of dialogue Snape states "I'm not a monster," and even though Hermione admits to herself that she doesn't see him as a monster, she doesn't tell him this, but instead responds with 'And yet you hold me here...,' so that to Snape, it must sound like she does think him a monster. Does that make more sense? Please let me know if you think it's still confusing; I thought it was clear when I wrote it, but sometimes it's hard for me to tell if what I'm conveying is the same as what's in my head. Thank you so much for your review, and for choosing to read my story.

So what does he want, a medal? He's still participating in the same ugly business. He's a damn hypocrite! He says he saved her life. He says he has done so much for her and that the others have been so cruel. So in the midst of that, he has to act like an arse when Hermione is (very evilly too) given a picture of a chiild she was forced to birth and give away? Where is the concern for her feelings that she had to do this terrible thing? Nope, all her cares about is that he gets his due, his hero worship that HE has done so much. Selfish Bastard!Livvy

(I was in the middle of writing a response to your review when I did something and accidentally closed the page. I don't think the response was sent, but if you get a duplicate, now you know why)!Your assesment is harsh, but I have to admit that it's insightful and mostly accurate. Sadly, Snape lives in a world where quid pro quos, half-truths and mistrust are the norm. This is most evident in his relationship with Lucius; even though they appear to be very good friends, theirs is clearly not a relationship based on trust, honesty and concern for one another, but rather on what they can each do for the other, and they both seem fine with that. Part of the problem is that Hermione doesn't fit into that world, so Snape is banging his head against the wall probably wondering why Hermione can't be as reasonable and accommodating as his good friend Lucius. I would say that Snape has a lot to learn. Thank you so much for reading, reviewing and rating my story. I trully appreciate it. :)

I disagree with criticisms of Hermione's behaviour. I think she is behaving exactly as she should. If things had gone smoothly in this chapter it would have been a very strange psychological disconnect.I can't think of a thing I don't like about this story. It deals with ugly topics (and Hermione's horrendous personal history) with exactly the right touch.Fabulous, darling.

Thank you, dear.I knew when I started to write this story that some readers were going to be dissapointed by what they would perceive as Hermione's rejection and distrust of Snape, while others would be offended by my portrayal of Snape as a flawed hero who doesn't always do the right thing, and even when he seems to be doing the right thing, he might be doing it for the wrong reasons. What actually surprises me is that I haven't gotten flamed yet! LOL I know you can't see the individual ratings, but even those readers who expressed they wished the characters were behaving differently, have still given the story a high rating, so I'm happy with that. :)It's when people start giving out single stars and writing 'this story sucks!' that I get nervous! LOL

Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Thank you! I can't tell you exactly when there will be an update, because the next chapter is now literally out of my hands. I sent it to my beta about three days ago, and her usual turn-around time is anywhere between three days and a week. After that, it goes in the queue, and depending on how busy the queue is it takes between one and four days for the chapter to be validated. So maybe a week? I hope that's not too long. Thank you for reading and reviewing my story. :)

OMG OMG.... please plese don't let them drift apart after this! Severus was such a sweetheart(even if he wants to hex me now) with teaching her the spells even without a wand and letting her read. Getting her a picture of her daughter was touching, but isn't it going to break Hermione's heart more to see her child whom she will never hold? On the other hand, maybe..if she has a baby with Severus, she could keep it...

Dang! That was depressing. I can't see why Hermione is acting so volatile and why she turned Snape down when he made sexual overtures. She came to the conclusion that: 'this she could do for him' in an earlier chapter. She also seemed to like the sex--as it was at least mildly enjoyable and he in no way degraded her.Yes, I know she's been through hell and back, but he HAS treated her far better than any other person has for the past 7 years and I would have expected her to realize that. Oh well, I look forward to more soon.
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
What you have described is exactly how Snape feels, and a valid argument from his point of view as far as I'm concerned! The problem is that I see Hermione as a much more conscientious character, and there are just too many unaswered questions about Snape's alliances and the extent of his role in Voldemort's victory at this point in the story for her to ignore, no matter how nice he's been to her so far, which is precisely what Snape doesn't fully understand. But that's addressed in the next chapter, so I'm not going to say any more. :) Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my story.

It's horrifying to think of having a child that would never be your own. I did like the perspective from Severus, his actions speak louder than words. Not to seem rude, but how long are you anticipating this story to be? Just wondered! Cheers!
Response from Alley_B (Author of The Long Way Down)
Your question is not rude at all -- I too want to know when I'm reading a story if there's an end in sight or if I'm going to be reading it for the rest of my life! heheThis story is going to be 12 chapters long, with possibly an epilogue or one additional chapter after that (I haven't decided yet). :)Thank you for choosing to read my story, and for reviewing.
