For the record, I hate these things. You're supposed to be witty and intriguing enough to draw in your fellow authors/readers/literary addicts, so they will desire to learn more. I'm afraid my witticism account has been depleted as of late. Perhaps it may be that there is a strong positive correlation between it and my banking account. It seems good humor is often tied to good finance. Footnotes of my life read as follows: I'm college educated several times over, thus I have no money (student loans, you see). Do we see my humor wavering? I've a background in business, music, cats, martial arts, horses, writing... never mind. Were I to hit only the highlights, I'd still have too much to write. Jack of all trades, Master of none. Or would that be 'Jane'? Though initially drug kicking and proverbially screaming (not the kicking - that was quite literal), my dear friend Pamela introduced me to the world of Harry Potter, and since then I've become a marrow-infested fanatic (read: bone-deep). Did I mention I've a dry sense of humor? Such as it is, it goes well with my love of LOTR. I'm a patron of the adventurous arts. If you've really a further interest in my most eclectic yet ever-so-humble life, e-mail me at sonofarathorn@bigfoot.com . Otherwise, I'll bore you no more. Without further adieu (or ado)- On with the show...
Reviews for The Valiant Never
OH WOW!!!!!!! I'm going to be on pins and needles until you get the next chapter up!!!! This is so fabulous!
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying it. I do have one more chapter complete. I still need to HTML it, then submit it for validation. I hope you continue to enjoy it.Thanks for the review!!!
Brilliant! I am so glad I found this gem of a story. It is so hard to find a great SB/HG story. I can't wait for the next chapter. You have me on pins and needles waiting for the couples first meeting. Must have more of this story soon. *begs*
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
*big grin* Thank you! I love to read that someone has derived enjoyment from my little tale. It warms my heart, truly! There are times I wonder if anyone even likes it a'tall, so these reviews are great.I've already written up through Chapter 10, and am just trying to get everything into HTML from Word, get each submitted and approved. Currently I'm fighting with Chapter 11, but hopefully will finish that soon.If you've any questions or such, e-mail me or leave me a posting on my LJ, and I'll respond. Thanks, again!
Response from siriusneeds (Reviewer)
No problem. I love it. You have lots of little bits thrown in there only a Sirius lover could appreciate. It warms my heart to know that good Sirius fiction does exist. I friended you at LJ hope you don't mind.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
LOL... yes, all my known fellow Sirius addicts love the titchy bits of info on him. *sigh*I'm glad you include TVN in the category of 'good Sirius fics'! So many get either lost or derailed from the fic in the first chapter. More's the pity.Sure, no problem! I'll friend you back when I pop over there. Forewarning: my journal has notices of all my chapters currently posted at FFN, so read at your own risk. ;-)
Each interaction between characters is done so well, I feel as though I am right there between them. From the awkward conversation between Hermione and Susan Bones to The-Band-Member-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named flicking beverage on the Woman-cum-Roadblock.
NSS wants more. Accio next chapter!
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
I am so laughing! Yep, the Pumpkin Lady was a bit of a roadblock, but our boy handled it well. Even without magic, crafty man.Thank you! That's the approach I try desperately to take - to put the reader there in the scene, to let them feel the moment and any emotions the character (in whose POV we are) is awash in. If you feel as though you are right there between them, then goal accomplished.NSS wants more, eh? Ah, there's plenty more. Currently a full five more chapters completed. I'll HTML the next and queue it tomorrow. Thanks again!Cheers!
So ... will we get to know more about The Mystic of the Mists, I wonder? Who is the lady by the lake – or should I say the lady in the lake? Pardon me, my mind is traveling the edges of a dream-state ... didn't I say once before that I was chanelling Hermione or she, me?
This review makes no sense, but it's one of those days. I saw that I hadn't reviewed this one, and had to stop by on my way to the next chapter.
Siriusly Seriously , I loved this chapter immensely, and you really write those half-on-the-edge-of-a-dream-states rather brilliantly. I live in those half the time, so I should know.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
*snorts* I visit those realms often enough, myself.Yes! Yes, I do believe you are chanelling Hermione. And perhaps vice-versa as well. This should prove most helpful for you in determining if she's quite in character.Ah, the lady in the painting... *looks away in moment of faux ignorance* Perhaps... Freud would have a field day with all of us and our siriusly seriously demented issues with Mister Black. Thanks! I'm glad you liked it - it's one of my favorites. Thanks for the review!!!
Oooh – intrigue ... and Raj certainly brings a lot of that to the table. And that he's the descendent of ... 'the bastard son of a witch' – I like that. I have a name of that bastard son of a witch, but I'll keep the suspense by not mentioning it here (plus, who knows, I might be wrong).
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
LOL! Hmmm, I wonder if your theory is the same as I've had a few suggest to me. So far, no one has actually guessed it. Chapter 11 begins with an important detail, but I believe 9 has a good one, too. There are several points here and there. But definitely, I'd like to hear your theory. Really. Drop me an e-mail if you don't want to post it. I'll let you know if you're right. Constant Vigilance! Thanks!!!!
Ooh, more mystery!I wonder how this is all going to tie together.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Ah, and it shall get even more mysterious in Chapter 3. You'll see more of Raj, and learn a few things from a different point of view. The plot thickens... ;-)
This was great. I could empathize with Hermione (never mind that I've felt impatient with conversations and felt the urge to vacate the room several times myself). And you have definitely caught my attention with this new character Raj MacGregor. The suspense is palpable.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Ah, I shall soon be blushing at such compliments! Thank you.The suspense will increase, as with the next couple of chapters you'll learn a bit more about Raj, see what else is happening in their world, and feel more of Hermione's not-so-uncalled-for tension.Hmm, think I'll up-load that this evening...I'm glad you are enjoying the story. I hope it keeps your attention. ;-)-kat
First of all, I like how you change scenes in your chapters; even though the setting and characters change, it flows very well.
I also need to say that I enjoy the way you write the accents, the drunken slurring, and the slang. (App'in was my favorite.) I love it when I can "hear" what I read.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you! I try to use a train of thought approach to changing scenes. It doesn't always work, but the attempt is there.I love the accents, particularly the drunken Brit-speak. It can be difficult to write sometimes, because I try to put myself in the scene and ask 'what would I hear if I were there?'. Yes, "App'in" is my favorite slang I created; I'm just waiting for it to go into common use! ;-)My general approach to writing is to put the reader in the scene themselves, either as one of the characters, or a 'shadow' following along with them. Isn't that the whole point of reading a ficticious piece, to escape your own reality? ;-)
This introduction is intriguing. I like how you integrate the wizarding world at the end and how you tied the Muggle world into it (colored lights from a lean torch). I have to say that Donovan's dream left me petrified ... I read it twice ... and my heart aches to find out the consequences and what it all means.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you!Yes, I had to try to view the scene in the DoM from a young boy's point of view - one who knew nothing of magic. I had to catch myself a few times to not describe it from a wizard's terminology.Petrified? lol... Hmm, it would have him as well, had he recalled much about it the next morning. The fact that he missed the black dog hairs falling from his clutched little fists is the part I really like about that scene. And yes, the consequences are drastic. ;-)
I really don't like Sirius in this, I've got to say. That was worse than him teasing her.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
I'm sorry...But I had to stay true to his character. The thing is, he just doesn't know how she feels, and he was frustrated and certainly wasn't trying to hurt her.Ignorance is painful sometimes. But fear not! Sirius is now aware, and things will surely change.....
That was a good chapter. I like the interaction between the Brothers Black.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you !The next chapter has a small bit of that interaction, too, but not quite as... er... nice.
I'm a late-comer to your story, and yes, I'm one who read the whole way through without leaving a review ... couldn't stop reading long enough to write! Thank goodness this was a complete story when I found it.You're quite the storyteller! I absolutely loved the way you phrased things. Loved your characterizations. I loved your take on Stubby Boardman!! I can't believe no one thought of that before; either for Regulus or Sirius. Well, I've not read a story using it before. You get extra super-duper points for being kind to Severus, too.I never caught the connection between the kids and those in the beginning, too amazed with the Stubby B. storyline. I don't do this very often, but this story goes into my favorites. Did I say how much I loved this one?
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
*grins massively**still grinning*Thank you!!!!What a wonderfully ego-boosting and thrilling review. Especially for a story complete so long. (I'm currently in the works of the 'sequel' to it.) It's such a mood enhancer to receive lovely reviews as yours - thank you! I have heard of one or two mentions to JKR as to if Stubby were really Sirius (and I'd questioned that myself), but in retrospect, when Dumbledore said the Order could hide anyone better than one would believe, it hit me that Regulus was another MIA and assumed/rumoured dead. And, I figured they would have favoured one another greatly, that strong Black bloodline. Thus... I like Severus - always had, and always thought he was really one the Order's side/side of good. Just not a 'people' person, so to speak. lolAh, the kids... no one was supposed to catch that, really. I tried to hint without overdoing so. It worked, I suppose? lolGreatly honoured that you're favouriting the story, and glad you've enjoyed my little (though often difficult to read) tale. Please, feel free to catch up on The Voice of All the Gods - Reg's story. I'm all for commentary, which helps me decide where and how to take it.Thanks, again!!!Cheers,
Great story; I can't wait to read more!
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying my little tale (that seems to be growing beyond intentions ).Perhaps another week to finish the next chapter, plus approval time from the wonderful notsosaintly. But soon...!
Those two boys need to get themselves together. They seem to be good people and family. And Hermione, she really needs to find herself something to hang on to. Good chapter.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
My most faithful reviewer!! Thank you!Yes, they do need to get themselves together. Sometimes that's a very difficult thing with siblings, no matter how good they each are, there may be hard feelings between them that go far back and quite deep. Such is the case...Hermione is about to find something to hang onto, and she's also about to get a bit of fight back in her. Thanks, again!Cheers!
I had forgotten all about the little boy missing his dog Captain...Great way to tie everything together.Glad Tia is stall around too.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
heeheehee... that was the intent. By the time we got to the end, most should have forgetten about Captain. The clues were there, but not blatant. I'm glad you liked it!lol... yes, Tia's still around. Their story will soon begin its postings here. In fact, I may settle down to put the first chapter in queue very shortly.Thank you for the lovely reviews and loyalty to the story! So very much appreciated.

Congratulations on finishing this epic! I like how you've left the door open for Regulus to end up happy as well. I've enjoyed the story greatly - thanks so much for sharing

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the saga. The 'follow-up' I made mention of (The Voice of All the Gods) will begin its posting here shortly if you choose to follow Reg's story.Ah, it has been a long and eventful journey. Thanks for sharing it!

Congratulations on a story well-told!! I love how the story came full circle like this. And I'm so incredibly happy that our couple found themselves a happy ending.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
*bows*Thank you, thank you. It was imperative that it came totally full circle. I'm just glad it actually made its way there, as there were times it frustrated me so.And a huge THANK YOU! to you for sticking with me and catching all those little blunders I kept missing. You are AWESOME!The next is ready for admittance to your queue once you're ready for the change of pace...

Very sweet. Feel a bit sorry for Regulus though. Seems almost like he's being booted from, or at least shifted over in order of importance in, his family right after finding it again. Hope there's someone in the future for him when the war is all over (possibly that girl from his past even). Looking forward to the next.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Aw.... yeah, I adore Reg, too, and it is sad for him in this instance. I've already submitted the next (as well as last) chapter, and I believe it answers pretty much all loose ends. I hope you like it, and that it, er, 'clarifies' much for you. I'm glad you liked this chapter; sort of one that has been hanging in the proverbial air all throughout the story, it seems.Thank you for the wonderful review!

Aww... thank you.

Aww... thank you.
I am very happy with the way this chapter ended. The whole scene was poetic, beautiful ... Hermione definitely deserved attention of that caliber. She might think he doesn't love her on the same level, but he truly does. That line how she wasn't his idea of a late night rendezvous behind the damned Quidditch pitch was absolutely perfect. But I have to say, that very last line was the best one. My heart melted and I just wanted to hug the stuffing out of him. (Okay, God, what I just typed made me feel really old.)
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Yea! I'm very, very happy you liked it. Your opinion does mean a lot to me, so if you liked it, it is good. Thank you; I can see Sirius having been that type during school. But I also see him as being that intense, that focused about things. When his passions are focused into one area, and at least reined in some, he could be that amazing. *sigh*heehee... yes, me, too. When I wrote that, I just wanted to sigh and wish him to take me away! No, you're not old at all; we're both just old enough to appreciate the sublties that mean more than the grandiose.Cheers!

Of course Sirius was enjoying the girl. Poor jealous Hermione.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
hehehe.... yes, poor Hermione. Well, at least she realizes now just how interested she actually is in him. Jealousy is a grand wake-up call, is it not? Thank you for the review!
I like the story. Your very creative use of characters is quite interesting. However, I find your stylistic old-fashioned-ness overwhelming and occasionally almost irritating. I know it's fun to write like that - I grew up on Tolkien et al - but this feels a bit overdone and contrived, and makes an otherwise very enjoyable story much less readable. Please don't think that I mean this as a flame; it's meant as merely my opinion. It's just that I've been thinking this for quite a while (as in, many chapters) and feel compelled to say so. Thanks for bearing with me thus far.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you for your honest review. I know the style of writing with this particular story can indeed be difficult to read, but for some reason (again, with this particular story) I feel compelled to follow that through the end, as though every time I sit to write it, the voice in my head narrating it just goes in this one direction. Perhaps too much English literature lately? (The story is actually finished, btw, and the next story is much easier to read, I believe.)Hopefully the wording will not put you off the story completely, and I appreciate that you have thus far waded through it. Again, thank you for your detailed review and continued interest in spite of the story's flaws.
Response from Gardengirl (Reviewer)
I'm so glad I managed to convey my thoughts without offending you. Thank you for being receptive to my opinion! Too much English lit indeed! (I'm a grad student in English Lit myself, just finished two Medieval Lit classes)How much longer to you forecast this fic to be? Am intrigued at the prospect of a "next fic" too!
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
lol... yes, I've been reading a lot of Austen-esque lit and way too much Masterpiece Theatre this past year or so. I really can't say why it is, as I rarely write that 'heavy' in the style, but something with this one story compelled me. *shakes head* Alas, so be it. *grins*There are 36 sections to the story: the Prologue, 24 'chapters' and the Epilogue. Off my head if I recall correctly, you've three more chapters of adventure and the Epilogue. The next to last is one I will have to check to see if the rating must be changed, but otherwise...The other story is 'sort' of related to this one, but not exactly. Not to speak (or rather, write) in riddles, I don't want to give away the minor revelation in the Epilogue, which is the premise for the next story, The Voice of All the Gods. Alas, it is not a Sirius fic (though his presence will be had). It is hopefully easier to read, but at the same time, I refuse to write 'See Jane run' sort of thing (I say that in response to only one or two early comments on another site, where apparently anything with more than three syllables scared the critters off), but I do use pronouns more often. English Lit grad student? Sweet. Myself, I never took English Comp or Lit in college (tested out from high school), which is sort of interesting in the fact that lit is one of my favorite subjects. I ended up with an MBA and an undergrad minor of Music. Currently, not using that edu. nearly at all!You know, I've often thought over the past few months that perhaps I should put a warning at the first of this story, pointing out the writing is one you can't glance over to read. Perhaps I shall think even more on that idea...
You resolve one cliffhanger, only to leave us with another! (I'm trying really hard not to comment specifically on either in case someone is reading the reviews first.) Still, leave it to Ginny to be cunning and devious. I always thought she was mis-housed, to tell you the truth.
Sirius' trip back into "reality" (his reality) was very well-written. My heart actually pumped faster through that part, as though I were going through it and not him.
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Ooooh, yes!!! Thank you! I tried to make Sirius' 'mental return scene' as realistic as possible, considering his circumstances. I also needed to get him there fairly quickly, to move the story to where it should be going, and that required the subtleness of his psyche's return to become primarily abrupt. I'm glad it came off well.Yes, the Sorting Hat probably did have a moment of hesitation, suggesting perhaps green was her color, eh? At least the one cliffhanger was resolved immediatley, while the other... well, it is introduced first thing in the next chapter. We're really getting to the meat of the story now - you might wish to take notes! ;-)Thanks, again, for such an encouraging review, and for all of your help.Cheers!
OH WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was quite the "reunion". I may be off the pins and needles for now, but I'll certainly be holding my breath waiting for the next chapter. ^.~LOVE this story!!! Great job!
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you! Yes; it wasn't quite the renunion most were expecting, I'd wager. And above that, I honestly think their immediate reactions were spot-on, considering how each really was on another line of thought. It wasn't how I originally intended, but as par. the chapter pretty much wrote itself. If you've any questions or 'guesses' you'd like to relay on, please do.Thanks, again! I love to read reviews, particularly when you say what you do/don't like.Cheers!kat
I love the way you wrote the section with Sirius. It paints his confusion so well.
Sorry for not reviewing this chapter sooner ... my mind is in such disarray, I feel rather like your Sirius!
Response from R J Lupins Kat (Author of The Valiant Never)
Thank you! Sirius is in that place of explanations and understandings just on the fringes of his mind, and it's driving him mental. It's frustrating,it's disheartening... I was hoping to convey that all across in a single chapter! ;-)I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll try to get Chapter 9 HTML'd soon and in queue. Thanks, again!
