I've never actually heard the word pronounced either way (that I recall, anyway).  I'm Canadian, though, and our editions of the books are the same as you've got in the UK; maybe our versions of the audiobooks are as well.  Still, I hope that the mispronunciation is forgivable; I only thought that the idea was just too silly not to share eventually.
