That was touchingly sweet as well as wonderfully funny...and I can very much see these two conducting their courtship in just this sort of tentative, roundabout, and somewhat ham-handed fashion!  With canon making it clear that both of these two are a little too inclined to be thin-skinned and to jump to conclusions before waiting to get all the facts first, some misinterpretation and misunderstanding would be virtually inevitable.
