Reviews for Hurrah for the Pirate King
Definitely the type of story that leaves a reader conflicted. Poor Hermione dreaming of what might have been but never was and now can't be and getting a lesson on how things might not be quite right at home.

Yes, I'm sorry there was no resolution! No wonder she wanted to buy more Daydream Charms and try again.

What a fate for a maiden fair, bound to a ginger prat, with her pirate King just out of reach.

Yes, I got all the references, Including HMS Semaphore. “I need something to rhyme with ‘One cheer more,’ something like ‘semaphore,’ but not that.” I don’t remember the exact quotation, but I know Semaphore was one of Gilbert’s earlier choices for the name of HMS Pinafore.
I got all the G&S references, that is. I can’t claim the same for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” references. I have seen the films, but not repeatedly. Hermione ought to go see “Penzance“ on stage. Seeing an opera on film is not the same, especially when it’s directed by someone who thinks he’s producing a Broadway musical instead of an opera.
Have you cast your voices for the Harry Potter opera yet? I have them all worked out. We all know Snape will be a silky bass-baritone, and Hermione the clever mezzo-soprano who gives good advice on snagging a man or defeating a Dark Lord.
P.S. Seattle G&S Society is doing Iolanthe this summer, my personal favorite! I’m told that Captain Shaw will be coming on stage on person with a working firehose. And next year it will almost certainly be the Pirates of Penzance, since our last two warhorses were Mikado and Pinafore.

Oh, yes, I meant the G&S ones. I also mean Hermione to have seen PoP on stage - the Kevin Kline film is great, but it hardly count as proper G&S!Ooooo, tell me more about the HP opera - I haven't heard about it! I think I'd put Snape as a baritone rather than a bass-baritone; I see him more as a Don Giovanni or Count Almaviva than a Figaro or Leporello.I am playing Iolanthe myself this year (37 years old playing someone who appears 17 - not bad going I think!) My personal favourite too. I've waited 9 years to play this part, and have now done my holy trinity: Phoebe, Mad Margaret and Iolanthe. Google G&S Cornwall if you want to see us. Wish we could have Capt Shaw in ours! :)

P.S. Did you get 'I saw a tart'?

As for my hypothetical Harry Potter opera (which exists only in my imagination): Harry being the witless hero will be the principal tenor, and Ginny his equally witless soprano. Hermione is the clever mezzo servant, and Ron a comic baritone with a patter song on the woes of being a sidekick. Draco will be sung by a mezzo-soprano as well (he was born for a trouser role.) Severus can be either a baritone or bass-baritone, complete with claw-like gestures. Minerva is a Gilbert and Sullivan contralto, and Voldemort a countertenor. Dumbledore is a bass; basses are always villains, grandfathers, or God, which pretty much has Dumbles covered.
And the Black Sisters, who never actually appear together in canon, will have to sing a trio:
Three little sisters Black are we, Pure as a pureblood well can be, Filled to the brim with witchery, Three little sisters Black.
Congratulations on getting the title role in Iolanthe! I don’t perform, myself. My official job is to assist with the in-house video (which means I get to see every performance), but I also do rehearsal sketches. I will check out Cornwall G&S. Seattle G&S is at http://www.pattersong.org/ I’m not sure exactly how functional Captain Shaw’s firehose will be. The role of Captain Shaw was auctioned off to members of the Society (one for each performance) as a fundraiser.
“I saw a tart” did not register at first. I knew it was something G&S, but it was at least an hour later that it came to me: “I, sore at heart…”

Such a great idea to auction off Capt Shaw for charity! I agree with all the casting in your opera and love the 3 little Blacks! Have you seen HMS Dumbledore? It might've been taken down, but I'll try and find a link.

I think I’ve heard of HMS Dumbledore, but I haven’t seen it. Do post a link if you can.
This exchange must seem odd to all the Harry Potter fans. Harry Potter is amusing, but Gilbert and Sullivan are forever.

: Do whatever you want with Wagner, but mess with Gilbert and Sullivan and you die! (I need to get that on a t-shirt.)

Thank you; glad you liked it. It was a great excuse to put the rude lyrics into a fic!
