Chapter 4 of 4
cmwintersSeverus Snape stood in Godric's Hollow, concealed deeply in shadow. He was a fool for coming here, but something drew him.
Presently, he heard the tell-tale crack! of another wizard Apparating. He watched as Harry Potter strode confidently towards the ruins of the house... the house that had once belonged to his parents.
Potter walked deferentially to what remained of the front porch, and looked around. He called softly into the black night "I'm alone..."
Snape took that as his cue and stepped into the light. "As am I."
They raised their wands simultaneously; Snape casting a Disillusionment Charm and Harry Muffliato, a reaction which caused both of them to raise their eyebrows at the other.
"It's not safe for you here,” Harry said finally.
"Nowhere in England is safe for me. However, nobody knows I am here, unless you told them."
"I have not... but I don't believe we should stand out in the open, chatting."
"Nor do I."
"Have any place in mind?"
"You should not leave the country, Mister Potter, but I cannot take you any place that I am privy to, as I am not the Secret Keeper, and even if I were, it would not be safe for you... for either of us. I know that 12 Grimmauld Place was destroyed. It would be foolish of me to attempt to take you to the school, and stupid of us to try to meet in Hogsmeade. There is only one place I can think of... and I will need to check it to ensure it is safe. Would you please excuse me for a few moments?"
Harry nodded.
"I will return shortly." Snape disappeared in silence.
A few moments later, he reappeared silently. "You can Apparate silently?" Harry asked.
"All of us can," Snape replied evenly.
"’Us’?" Harry asked.
"The Death Eaters," Snape elaborated darkly, lest the foolish boy forget whom he was meeting with, as unlikely as that possibility was. "They do not always do so, occasionally preferring to announce their presence, but they can."
"Hm. Useful skill to have."
"Indeed it is."
Harry eyed Snape for a few moments, seeming to size him up, as the older man looked on calmly. "Can you teach me?"
Snape snickered. "Are you now planning on becoming a Death Eater, Mister Potter?" he queried with a raised eyebrow.
It was Harry’s turn to snicker. "Well… you know… I thought, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and all that."
Snape snorted. "I must admit, Mister Potter, that having had six years of what I deem to be poor success in instructing you, I am reluctant to enter into such an agreement again, particularly given that such a skill is typically used for such dark reasons. Perhaps, then, I should just scribble the instructions in the margins of an old textbook… ?"
Harry stifled a laugh, as what his old professor said really wasn’t funny, but the other man did have a point. "Yes, that did seem to work well, didn’t it?"
Snape didn’t reply, he just raised his eyebrows.
"So... your 'place'... is it safe?"
"It is... but I will have to Side-Along Apparate you."
"That's fine," Harry said, meeting his eyes. There was no fear there whatsoever. "You've done it before."
Snape snorted in spite of himself. "You were... considerably smaller, then."
"Yes... well, somehow, I don't think it's a skill you'd have forgotten with time."
"I must warn you... when I… left… Hogwarts, I asked some… ‘old friends’… to raze the place, to throw the Ministry off my trail. It is in quite poor condition, now; don’t be alarmed."
"All right."
Snape tilted his head, and held out his arm. "I have been to your home... will you now accompany me to mine?"
Harry nodded, and grasped Snape's arm.

Intriguing. Is this really all there is? Nicely done.

Well, yeah. Sort of. It's sort of a knock-off AU of a story I'm ostensibly working on. *eyeroll at self*In the story I'm working, Harry & Snape don't ever have this confrontation, but the rest of it (Snape being the one at Godric's Hollow, the shell-shock, etc) do happen.I recommend not holding your breath; my muse has moved out on me. She wants a divorce.
I like their convo and trust, albeit limited. Can't wait to see what's next.

Alas, alack, this ficlet is complete. Although that seems to have gotten quite a few rotten tomatoes thrown in my general direction...everyone wants to see this continue.
I won't be going any further on this, at least not now, but the longer project I have in the works has Chapter 1 from Snape's perspective. Chapters 2-4 are entirely A/U (from my OWN FIC...how sick am I?!), because in the longer one, Harry doesn't actually look into the Pensieve, hence the A/U part. This is more like a "but what would happen if he DID?"
However...the rest of it...well, all of it, basically supports my theory that Snape *was* at Godric's Hollow, and I am very anxious to see if that is borne out.
southern_witch_69's response: Oh, I see. I was thinking that you'd have another bit to add on. You know how us nosey readers are. If Snape had been there, this would have been a good way for it to have happened. I'm of the belief that he was at Hogwarts and that Peter was with Voldemort (since Peter had the wand, since Snape said he was at the castle, and since Dumbledore had the cloak). I really hope things work out for him though--redemption wise and being able to live. Thanks for sharing this.Your last review response said something about Death.... Noooooo..... LOL So far so good!

Oh, "the plot bunnies of death"? Yikes, you scared me. Heh.
Never fear, tPBoD are just an evil cult that have all kinds of ideas spring to me at the most INAPPROPRIATE times, *unfailingly* when I am not near a keyboard.
I ended up buying an audio recorder to contain them; I put something like an hour and a half worth of 7-90 second snippets that amounted to "oh and write this in there" "oh, and we have to figure out $foo". It's been highly annoying.
As near as I recall, I am not killing anyone who doesn't get killed in canon. Except for the epilogue, but that might work it's way to canon anyway.
I'm somewhat of a canon nazi...
Holy crap! This is turning out fantastic! Great pacing, and interesting ideas!

I'm so glad you're enjoying this. :) I hope you continue to enjoy the story, although it's almost over...
However, the longer WIP I'm working on will have the underlying story told from Snape's perspective. :)
I really enjoyed this, and I can't wait to see what's next. There is something next, right? hehe... I like that Snape tried to help.

I'm quite glad you enjoyed this. Although, of course immediatley after I posted them, I got hit by the PLOT BUNNIES OF DEATH, and so had to edit both chapters 1 and 2.
However (*wink*) , chapters 3 and 4 are in the queue now. I have a feeling you'll be seeing them soon. :P
I do recommend re-reading 1 & 2 though, because that's some kind of "big" stuff that got added.
This fic is basically an "A/U"ish style companion to my longer WIP...while Harry won't actually look into the Pensieve in my WIP, this is like, "What would have happened if he'd done it." You also might be interested in my post about this entire theory, over on hp_essays on LJ.
And as of chapter 4, it's completed. ;)
Interesting story.
Response from cmwinters (Author of Trust)
Thank you. I wrote an essay about the theory, actually. I did have to update chapters 1 & 2, and 3 & 4 are in the queue now, so you may be interested in re-reading them. :)
Response from Fenrir (Reviewer)
I am, and will check them out, thanks!
