Chapter 3 of 4
cmwintersHarry Potter pens a letter to Severus Snape. Will he reply? Will he comply?
ReviewedSeverus Snape's head snapped up at the hysterical pattering of an owl's beak on his window. The smallest owl he'd ever seen was twittering madly about his office window. He opened the window to allow the animal entrance. He could easily close his fist around the thing, and it would still have room to breathe. How it was carrying its bundle, he had no idea.
He removed said bundle from the leg of the owl and absently tossed it some owl treats. He wondered if the excitable little being would be able to swallow them, and looked up in alarm as it hacked dangerously, apparently having swallowed a big piece too fast. He pointed his wand and diced the treats so the stupid animal wouldn't kill itself trying to attend to a basic bodily function.
A very small tube was encased in a piece of parchment.
Odd... that looked like a memory... but what was wrong with it... why was it so small?
Frowning, he locked his door, pulled out his Pensieve, and dumped the memory into it. He tried to watch it from his current vantage point, but it was blurry and indistinct. He'd have to go into the Pensieve.
It was an exceedingly short trip. All he saw when he put his face into the silvery substance was a pale, bared left arm with an ugly, fading brand on it, and a chubby, toddler's fist jabbing him and insisting, "Pier!"
His arm. His Dark Mark. Harry Potter's chubby toddler fist, insisting that Peter Pettigrew was similarly marked.
A fact he'd not known the night of that incident.
He blanched as he sat up straight in his chair.
He'd never shown that memory to anyone... not even to Albus! As far as he knew, there were only two people alive with that recollection of the evening... himself, and one other, who was undoubtedly out for his blood.
Alarmed, he turned his attention to the parchment.
It was an equally short letter.

You have answers. I have questions.
Let's meet to talk.
Same time. Same place as when this happened.

Cryptic, but effective. He snickered at the use of his old moniker... but very few people knew it, so it was as reasonably as secure as it could be.
The request itself was out of the question, of course. Great Scott, he was in more danger now that the boy had done that than ever in his life, since James Potter's stupid son couldn't block emotion out to save his own life. He certainly couldn't block out emotion in order to save the life of someone he detested.
He looked up at the owl. "Do you know who sent this letter?" He winced as the owl twittered around madly. Merlin's beard, the thing had more energy in five minutes than he had in his life. "Yes or no will be fine. Are you up for another long trip?" The owl hooted happily, so Snape grabbed a piece of parchment and scrawled across it carelessly.
Out of the question.
Close your mind!
He tied this to the owl's feet and tossed it out the window, and, putting the incident entirely out of his mind, went back to work.

A few weeks later, another owl he didn't recognize came tapping at his window. He allowed the owl entrance and removed the parchment. Apparently the animal had been instructed to not wait for reply, as it took off immediately through the window he'd not yet closed.
He recognized the handwriting, of course; how could he not, after having taught the boy for six years?
He was sending different owls, though... that was good.
Like the other letter, this one was succinct.
It is. Feel free to check.
Offer stands.
Hope to see you there.
Dare he?
This would bear some consideration.

Intriguing. Is this really all there is? Nicely done.
Response from cmwinters (Author of Trust)
Well, yeah. Sort of. It's sort of a knock-off AU of a story I'm ostensibly working on. *eyeroll at self*In the story I'm working, Harry & Snape don't ever have this confrontation, but the rest of it (Snape being the one at Godric's Hollow, the shell-shock, etc) do happen.I recommend not holding your breath; my muse has moved out on me. She wants a divorce.
I like their convo and trust, albeit limited. Can't wait to see what's next.

Alas, alack, this ficlet is complete. Although that seems to have gotten quite a few rotten tomatoes thrown in my general direction...everyone wants to see this continue.
I won't be going any further on this, at least not now, but the longer project I have in the works has Chapter 1 from Snape's perspective. Chapters 2-4 are entirely A/U (from my OWN FIC...how sick am I?!), because in the longer one, Harry doesn't actually look into the Pensieve, hence the A/U part. This is more like a "but what would happen if he DID?"
However...the rest of it...well, all of it, basically supports my theory that Snape *was* at Godric's Hollow, and I am very anxious to see if that is borne out.
southern_witch_69's response: Oh, I see. I was thinking that you'd have another bit to add on. You know how us nosey readers are. If Snape had been there, this would have been a good way for it to have happened. I'm of the belief that he was at Hogwarts and that Peter was with Voldemort (since Peter had the wand, since Snape said he was at the castle, and since Dumbledore had the cloak). I really hope things work out for him though--redemption wise and being able to live. Thanks for sharing this.Your last review response said something about Death.... Noooooo..... LOL So far so good!

Oh, "the plot bunnies of death"? Yikes, you scared me. Heh.
Never fear, tPBoD are just an evil cult that have all kinds of ideas spring to me at the most INAPPROPRIATE times, *unfailingly* when I am not near a keyboard.
I ended up buying an audio recorder to contain them; I put something like an hour and a half worth of 7-90 second snippets that amounted to "oh and write this in there" "oh, and we have to figure out $foo". It's been highly annoying.
As near as I recall, I am not killing anyone who doesn't get killed in canon. Except for the epilogue, but that might work it's way to canon anyway.
I'm somewhat of a canon nazi...
Holy crap! This is turning out fantastic! Great pacing, and interesting ideas!

I'm so glad you're enjoying this. :) I hope you continue to enjoy the story, although it's almost over...
However, the longer WIP I'm working on will have the underlying story told from Snape's perspective. :)
I really enjoyed this, and I can't wait to see what's next. There is something next, right? hehe... I like that Snape tried to help.

I'm quite glad you enjoyed this. Although, of course immediatley after I posted them, I got hit by the PLOT BUNNIES OF DEATH, and so had to edit both chapters 1 and 2.
However (*wink*) , chapters 3 and 4 are in the queue now. I have a feeling you'll be seeing them soon. :P
I do recommend re-reading 1 & 2 though, because that's some kind of "big" stuff that got added.
This fic is basically an "A/U"ish style companion to my longer WIP...while Harry won't actually look into the Pensieve in my WIP, this is like, "What would have happened if he'd done it." You also might be interested in my post about this entire theory, over on hp_essays on LJ.
And as of chapter 4, it's completed. ;)
Interesting story.
Response from cmwinters (Author of Trust)
Thank you. I wrote an essay about the theory, actually. I did have to update chapters 1 & 2, and 3 & 4 are in the queue now, so you may be interested in re-reading them. :)
Response from Fenrir (Reviewer)
I am, and will check them out, thanks!
