Tragedy prompts Hermione to make a breakthrough discovery, and Severus Snape grudgingly agrees to assist her. Things do not progress smoothly, but sometimes, it is merely a matter of seeing things in a different light… This story is A/U after Book 5.

Iridescent Snow is NOT abandoned, but it's on a rather long hiatus! Unfortunately, I've been stolen away from the fandom by RL in the form of medical school!

Snape certainly seems to have equivocal feelings about the project. It will be a fascinating journey. :)

Equivocal is a good word, I'm afraid he'll be in that frame of mind on more than one occasion in this story :) Thanks for the review!
Has it really been a year between updates? you managed to pick up where you left off with zero difference in your writing style, which often happens when someone dives back into a story. I enjoyed this one and am interested in seeing where the brilliant, but not a know-it-all, Hermione takes her project.

Yes, it definitely WAS a year between updates for this particular chapter, unfortunately :-P I started writing it in 2005 and didn't pick up Ch. 4 until 2006. However, I'm also guilty of a further atrocity in that I then didn't post Ch. 5 until this year, 2009 :-) I'd be interested in whether you still think the style has remained consistent once that chapter goes up. I did try hard to keep it consistent, but I personally feel I've shifted a little! Thanks for reading the story :) I've no intentions of wandering off for year-long hiatuses this time!
Though I anxiously await the next update, I can certainly relate to the delaying effects of RL. Take your time, and I, for one, will still be here to read whenever you can get some spare time to write!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! However, for now, at least, there will be no long waits between chapters. The author's note is a bit outdated and was a remnant from when I had posted this story elsewhere. I've only recently begun posting at TPP and arrived at the archive with a chunk of the story ready to go. There are nine chapters written and I'm uploading in the queue as fast as I can! :)
She has him listening. That's got to be the hardest step!

:) She's an insufferable know-it-all, but he can't help but get sucked in!
Wooow! Smart one that Granger lol!
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Heh, yeah, she's an insufferable know-it-all! :) Thanks for the review!
Such a beautifully poignant scene... I cannot wait for the next chapter.
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Aw, thanks again :) There will be more coming up, at least until Ch. 9, and I'm working on Ch. 10!
Very well-written, and I'm very intrigued to see what comes next!

Thank you! :)
I look forward to follow this story, Hermione on a warpath and out for revenge is my kind of story.
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Thanks! :) Stay tuned, more coming up!
This turning into quite a story!
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Thank you! Hope you like it, there is more coming up :)
I like the premise and look forward to the next chapter!

Thank you! :)
Snape appears to have more humanity in this than Dumbledore. I read this recently elsewhere. Still good! :)
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Thank you! Yes, though Severus would probably take offense at being described as such :)
Great start! I am intrigued.
I like your portrayal of Snape. This made me giggle: Severus knew that the insufferably clever witch had probably already mastered joint Apparation and could easily whisk the Weasley dolt to safety in a moment’s notice if too large an arachnid happened to cross the boy’s path. I also like the title of your fic!
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Thank you very much! Glad you found the line funny--I have to admit, I go back and read that (I wrote this chapter quite some time ago), and have to wonder--uh oh, maybe no one else will get that joke :P
Beautifully written, as always! The storyline is incredibly original, and I love how you manage to weave the tension so slowly throughout the chapter. I do have an off-topic question, though, if you don't mind? I've read this in a lot of stories, and I just wondered if I could get your personal view on the subject...A lot of authors, and even canon, often offer scenarios where Hermione is portrayed/considered to have such an advanced intellect that it seems she is unparalled among her peers and, well, all within Potterverse. While I can perfectly understand that, and I also view her as extremely intelligent, I'm just curious if anyone else, like myself, sees Snape as her intellectual equal, if not slightly her superior. No one else in canon seems to have accomplished, especially at such a young age, spell/charm/hex/curse creation – especially to such an extent that it becomes widely popular ("Levicorpus" – that was canon, right, that he created that? Sometimes I get canon mixed with fanon...). Also, his notes in his Advanced Potions book (HBP) helped Harry surpass even Hermione's skills in Potions classes... Like I said, it's pretty off-topic, I'm not trying to suggest that you're characterization of Snape is anything less than brilliant, in every sense of the term, I was just wondering if you, personally, think he is at least as gifted, if not slightly more, than Hermione, when he was her age. I just ask because so many claim, in canon and fanon, Hermione to be "the brightest witch of her age," and I feel almost as though that's an insult to the young Snape, who revealed an amazing amount of talent himself – though no one seems (character-wise) to acknowledge that, really. No "brightest wizard of his age," or anything. Sorry, I'm babbling. Just, honestly, wondering – I'm not in any way trying to reflect on your (amazing!) characterization of Snape, or hint at anything – obviously you present him as highly intelligent, or he would not have been able to grasp Hermione's genius proposal....K. I'll shut up now. Amazing chapter, can't wait for the update!

:) This is great! I'm happy that the story is providing so much mental fodder, thanks for the lovely review. I agree with you fully that Snape is in every way Hermione's intellectual equal. While I had not thought that he would ever be insulted, it's a really great point you bring up. At any rate, I think it explains why the two seem to be such a no-brainer as a pair. You have someone who is clearly a powerful, intelligent, albeit, damaged wizard and an equally brilliant, though occasionally over-naive witch. I do wonder if the failure to recognize Severus' brilliance has anything to do with his Death Eater status and his unpopularity as a kid. You gotta admit, it's much easier to shower a valiant Gryffindor with adulation than with the big bad Dark Wizard :) Thank you for your compliments regarding Snape's characterization. I did work very hard to make him believable. He's really my muse and I adore writing him :)
A blind Hermione. Refusing to acknowledge her neediness. How could Snape resist her now? He feels partially responsible. He will help her, take care of her. He won't be able to stop himself.
Great, angsty fic. I love it.
Dear labrt2004.
Beautiful chapter. Especially loved your visualisation of the chaos in Neville's tortured mind.
And speaking of tortured minds: It will be interesting to see how Hermione deals with this new and horrible development. First the loss of her parents, and now her sight is gone as well.
Can't wait to see where you take this. (waits with baited breath in front of my computer ... or would if RL didn't keep interfering ... don't you just hate that?)
Poor Hermione. I really hope she gets better sooner rather than later.
Why did you have to stop it there?! Lol, I can't wait to read more:)
Poor Hermione, done in by her very being and the magic of the founders.
I still don't understand why she is blind. Why would the Founder's magic do that? Perhaps it is like drinking methanol rather than ethanol! :)
This is getting really good, I want to read more:)
I'd be a tad concerned if I was Draco! :)
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Yes--as they say--sucks to be him! :-D Thanks for the review!
That is quite fascinating, I love the magic she is uncovering.
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Thank you! The magic is one of the most fun parts of the story to write... especially when it's not canon and I get to just make stuff up... :-P
I must agree with JENGEORGE, I love this story, too. And this chapter is a very logically in-character follow-up to the previous one.Great job!
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
Thank you! I always appreciate your reviews :-)
I love, Love, LOVE this story!!!! I command that you give up all the business you have in you life and commit to finishing it! (Boy, if only it were that easy!) You're characters are so spot on- I can't help but to think that they would respond exactly as you have them if they were in these situations. I find myself checking almost daily to see if there is an update (I really do have a life, I swear!). Truly I say these things not to guilt you (OK, maybe a little), but for you to see that your writing is appreciated. I cannot wait for more. Thanks for taking the time to write this down.
Response from labrt2004 (Author of Iridescent Snow)
LOL! Why, thank you! (I think...) Actually, you don't have to command that at all--sadly, I don't do much these days except work on this obsession of mine. I just wish I had the gift of fast writing! Thanks for the review, I really appreciate it :-D
