Reviews for The Price of Need
That's absolutely creepy. I know she was desperate but she should have known better than to trust that poor excuse of a salesman.
OMG that was chilling. I must read something else or I will have nightmares!!Have you ever read "the Monkey's Paw" I can't remember who wrote it. But the person in possession of the paw can make three wishes. Only strange things happen to make the wishes come true. A lady wished for lots of money, and her son, a factory worker, died on the job, crunched up in the equipment, so she got his life insurance money. I think if you Google it you can find it on line. Creepy. This reminded me of it a little. Of course the shop owner must be Satin himself.Well done.

Yes, The Monkey's Paw by WW Jacobs. One of my all time favorite short horror stories! I am definitely intrigued by the theme of be careful what you wish for. Yes, I didn't want to make the shop owner a vengeful wizard or anything. Thanks,

Dear kizzy7.Dark. Creepy. Scary. Loved it. Good work.

Dear Contessa... Thank you!! *grin* Exactly what I was going for!!
That was twisted. Well written, but very twisted. I feared the price would be something of that nature. A bit reminiscent of City of Angels where in order to gain a human life, his love loses her own. Sad. :(

Thank you! Definitely meant to be twisted a bit! Oh, City of Angels, that was so sad. Haven't seen that in a while! Thanks for reading and reviewing!
Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that the proprietor of the "Heart's Desire" has over the course of his long career used a wide variety of aliases..."Iblis" and "Old Scratch" to name but two? In this respect, I find myself reminded of the story "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury -- a lot of those people similarly had their wishes gratified, but always in a manner which turned it into a curse rather than a blessing. Prolonging Severus's life (and her own, however inadvertently) has caused her to lose not only her daughter but Severus's love as well -- and if the potion does not render the drinkers immortal, it's possible that the price Hermione paid in order to hold onto Severus might just include her soul as well considering the individual with whom she made her bargain even though she thought her intentions were good. Is it possible that Hemione, in much the same way that so many other people have before her, confused love with control?

I haven't read "Something Wicked This Way Comes!" It is immediately going on my list. Sounds wonderful-- I adore a good scary story. Yes, the theme of be careful what you wish for is a prevalent and interesting one to trace in fiction. As for Hermione's soul-- very possible, and something that I didn't really consider! As for your last sentence, how insightful! Something she couldn't control--and so she was willing to do anything, and that ultimately cost her dearly. Thanks for the brilliant review,

You're quite welcome, Kizzy dear -- you know how much I enjoy reading your stories. I hope that you enjoy reading "Something Wicked This Way Comes" -- there's also an excellent even though not entirely faithful film adaptation which stars Jonathan Pryce (one of my favorite British actors) as the sinister Mr. Dark, Bradbury's equivalent to the owner of the Heart's Desire. With regard to what I said about confusing love with control, it's been my opinion for some time now that many (perhaps even most) people unfortunately believe that attempting to control someone is part of loving someone when nothing could be further from the truth -- and the worst of it is that they're usually totally unaware of the ways in which this belief sabotages them. Although Hermione truly believed her intentions were good, let's remember that the proverbial road to Hell is said to be paved with them (perhaps literally in her case). It's only natural that she would be reluctant to let Severus go, but she took it too far and decided that what she wanted was the only thing that mattered -- including what Severus himself wanted, since he was one of the ones telling her to let him go. Ironically, by making the decision she made so that she wouldn't lose him, she brought about the very situation which she wanted at all costs to avoid.
Yikes, that was awful! I mean it was good... but well, awful. Nicely written and I can guess that a lot of people would go to such lengths for a loved one without considering the price to be paid. I didn't expect the ending that is for sure. So a little bit of a downer for me who thrives on happily ever after, but a very good read nonetheless. Thanks for sharing!

"...a bit of a downer for me who thrives on happily ever after..." You know, I love happy endings as well, but it just didn't work out here! Thanks for reading and reviewing,
