Chapter Three
Chapter 3 of 3
neelixThis is a song-inspired fic featuring Hermione and Severus. It's only short but I hope you like it all the same!
Macushla, Macushla your red lips are saying
That death is a dream and love is for aye
Then awaken Macushla, awake from your dreaming
My blue eyed Macushla awaken to stay.
*************************************
There was a nip in the air, and as Hermione landed on the cliff top, she wrapped the cloak around her tightly. She was always surprised by how blowy this particular outcrop seemed to get, and she wondered if it would be the same in the summer months. There were stars twinkling above the cottage, and the noise of the sea roaring and crashing against the rocks below faded as she approached the weather-beaten door slowly.
There was stillness to the place, and she paused before placing her hand on the rusty metal handle. Her whole life, her whole future, depended on what was within, and she held her breath as she entered.
The small room was cold, and she knew with sinking reality that no fire had been lit in recent days. There was no sign that this room had been occupied since her last visit. A thin layer of dust coated the kitchen table, and the old wooden clock on the mantle needed winding.
Hermione sighed deeply and walked towards the bedroom, pushing the door open roughly. Her hand flew to her mouth as she stared at the bed, and she walked quickly over to Severus’s side, her hand reaching out tentatively. His blood was on the pillow, and his potion bottles were empty. He had been here. But he wasn’t here now.
Hermione ran her hands through her windswept hair, and with a beating heart, she proceeded to change the bedclothes and tidy the cottage. She worked through the night, sweeping out all of the small corners, hanging the dusty rugs on the garden fence, and letting the wind do her job for her. She chopped wood until her hands blistered, and she set a roaring fire in the grate. It was not the time of year for flowers, but she pulled up some of the more interesting grasses from the surrounding dunes and spelled them to sparkle in the chipped glass vase. She placed the vase on the kitchen table, then proceeded to open what tins she could find and set about making soup, oblivious to the sun as it started to rise over the horizon. Placing a warming charm over the soup, Hermione crawled, exhausted, into bed.
*******************
He berated himself for leaving the cottage. He should have just waited for Hermione, but he had needed to know if she had survived, and he hadn’t wanted to wait. His potions had run out, and his blood loss had made him weak. Apparating to Hogwarts had been a very bad idea, and he had vomited and almost fainted on landing. He used his last reserves of energy to Disillusion himself. He was thankful that no one had seen his tears of joy and gratitude as he saw her and watched her mourn for those lost in the battle.
He saw her slip away and followed her at a slight distance, until she had started to run. He had no hope of catching up with her in his weakened state, so he had slipped inside the castle and Flooed back to Spinner's End, where he had collapsed onto the old moth-eaten couch and fallen asleep almost immediately.
********************
Severus awoke and stretched uncomfortably, rubbing his hair from his eyes and inhaling his first morning breath. The air in the house was stale, and he needed to get out of there as soon as possible. He knew the place was most likely being watched by one enemy or another. He stood slowly and then walked to his private stores. The Blood Replenishing potion was almost out, and he knew he would need more. But for now, he just needed to enough to get himself to the cottage.
He paused and thought of Hermione, and his stomach flipped over. Had she stayed? She had promised to wait for him. He promised she wouldn’t have to wait any longer, and swallowed the potion quickly.
Severus Disillusioned himself and stepped through the Floo to the Three Broomsticks. He walked slowly through the crowd; some were still celebrating Voldermort’s downfall, some drowning their sorrows. No one noticed him brushing past them, and he slipped out of the door unnoticed. He didn’t glance around himself as he walked through Hogsmeade. He had no desire to remember it, although he knew he wouldn’t be returning any time soon. His focus was on one place and one person, and as he reached the Apparition point, he smiled to himself.
*********************
She was sleeping. He gazed down at her for a long time and marvelled at the way her eyelashes sat just beneath her lower lids, caressing her face. Her mouth was slightly parted, and in the half-light, they looked darker than normal. He had never seen anything quite as perfect, and he sighed deeply as he sat down beside her and took her hand in his.
She shifted slowly, and her eyelids opened suddenly to stare at him. Her fingers curled around his, and she squeezed tightly, saying nothing. They looked at each other for a long time, sharing shy smiles until Hermione started to laugh, her head thrown back with joy. She pulled him down beside her and kissed him fiercely before snuggling under his arm and forcing him to hold her. Severus sighed and closed his eyes.
The End

Harry knows?
What a beautiful little piece of fiction – Thank you!
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
Oh what a nice thing to say! thank you so much!
Ahh, thank you. I was a bit nervous when she arrived to find the place seemingly deserted. Then I was sure when she walked into the bedroom that he would be lying there, dead. Thanks for letting him live. A nice ending, where I'm sure they'll find peace.

I have to tell you that neither Hermione nor Severus will ever pop their clogs in any of my fics! And there will always be a happy ever after - I am a sucker for it! Thanks for reviewing and I am very pleased you liked it!
Such a sweet ficlet. I like the idea of an unplottable cottage he could use as a base...its interesting to start from a point like you started from, so each reader can invent their own beginning and ending. Great job!
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
Thank you so much! I like stories where you have to fill in the gaps... it's just a small snap shot, so you can make up the rest rather than have me hold your hand. Thanks for the reveiw!
What a lovely little story and a much nicer ending to the battle. Thank you so much for sharring this.
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
ahh thank you so much. I hope you listened to the song, it makes the fic all the more emotional.
Great story.

ahhh... thank you! I didn't think it needed anything else. They had each other, and that was the ultimate aim after all.

Thanks for reviewing, and I hope the next (last) chapter doesn't disappoint.
How could she have waited so long to go to the cottage? I know there were the deaths of friends to mourn, and a victory to cherish in the company of surviving friends, but I know I'd have had to steal a few moments to go to the cottage... just in case, you see...I hope that Severus is still alive and waiting for her. Sigh! I can't wait for your next chapter. Well done!Beth
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
She had to wait, because they've kept everything secret. She couldn't risk blowing the cover on their relationship, plus - there is the fall out from Severus killing Dumbledore to deal with... he's not a free man yet! But Harry knew....Thanks for reviewing and I am very glad you are enjoying it.
Oh! I hope he's still alive! I can't believe she couldn't break away before now.
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
She has to bide her time. Their relationship is secret and as far as they know he's dead right? AND he killed Dumbledore and the truth is not yet out. He's not a free man.... she has to protect him, for her own sake. Thanks for reviewing. Answers in the next chapter, which is in the queue.
Slipping away to spend a moment with Severus, how romantic. Figures all Ron cares about is his stomach.
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
uhuh!! I like to try and stick to type!
Intriguing. I like the way it starts in the middle of things, gives the reader all sorts of leeway to imagine how they have come to this point.
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
Thanks for the review. I love stories that give the reader food for thought, and when I heard this song and the lyrics, it really sparked my imagination. I could see them forming a relationship and keeping it secret etc. Even I am asking... how did they come to this point? lol
Really nice opening, Look forward to more.

Thank you! I hope the rest doesn't disappoint - it's only short.
Well, I'm worried already. It would be so hard for them to know what the future might hold, yet try to live in the present. I suppose their meetings must be very short if she has to cover them up with the gathering of firewood.
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
My thought was that once the boys were asleep in the tent, she would sneak out to Severus. This would be before they started to keep watch alternately, naturally - although she's a determined young woman so I am sure she would have found a way! Thanks for the review :)
This is a heartbreaking opening and I want so badly for Severus and Hermione to be together. Knowing the lyrics, I have to wonder in what direction events will carry them.Well done, you have set the tone perfectly.Beth
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
Thank you so much. The song is so moving, it seemed the perfect back drop to a relationship between them set at that time...
I rather stupidly didn't realise that this was a 3 chapter story and reviewed on chapter 1 thinking that was it! I'm so glad it wasn't!If only JKR could have given him an ending like this (don't get me started on that - I could go on for hours!!)I do so love happy endings...thank you! :-)
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
lol.. don't worry! Did you listen to the song? It's beautiful and very moving...
Having read and reviewed one of your stories earlier today (which I loved!), I've been tempted to check out more of your stuff. This is absolutely lovely too and brought tears to my eyes...poor Severus and poor Hermione, I guess the future doesn't bode well for them. Clearly you are a true romantic though and this is a poignant little fic. Do you mind me asking if you are Irish by any chance? I realise that the song is Irish and I believe I'm right in saying that it was featured in the film Michael Collins (which of course starred Alan Rickman) and which I was co-incidently only recently watching.I just have to add here that the thought of a secret 'tryst' with the dear Potions master has set my pulse racing - would definitely make a camping trip bearable in my opinion! :-)
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
You're a clever little thing! I'm not Irish but I have been living with an Irishman for 20 years (married him eventually...) and we do live in Ireland now, which I totally love... it's such a spiritual place, good for feeding the muse... and my favourite actor is ALAN RICKMAN!! Who'd a' guessed???In fact, if you're a fan, check out the link to the Page394 forum! Thanks for the lovely review.
That was madening the way they kept missing each other there at the end. Thankfully they reunited again at their cottage. Thank you for not letting Snape be killed by that damn snake.
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
Never! JKR made a HUGE mistake!
Response from MollysSister (Reviewer)
Amen to that!
Harry knew??? When did he get to be so observent? Love it
Response from neelix (Author of Macushla)
My story... Harry was just a plot point to get hermione outa there! In my head he's not that smart to be honest, but I am guessing he knew more than he was letting on. I think we'll never know!
