Katie hid in shadows, drawing her knees to her chest and leaning her head against his shoulder.
Her fingertips traced the moving figure inside the photograph. Every breath drawn was a fight against a choking sob.
"I’m so ashamed," she whispered. Her voice hitched as she looked up at him. "I was afraid to tell her goodbye. And now, it’s too late."
Charlie kneeled beside her and pulled her close. "I’m here for you," he said. "No matter what. I’ll always be here."
She inhaled his scent, which mingled with the summer wind, his presence a balm on her grief.
