Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Chapter 2 of 2
ancientgirlThe second and final part of this short tale.
ReviewedThis final part is taken from the song of the same title. As you will notice with some of the words to the song, I thought that this fit Severus very nicely.

Thank you to June for all of her help in getting this story ready to post.
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Severus heard the rustle of her clothes. Of course it was her.
“I was wondering how long it would take for you to show yourself, Miss Granger.” He then held up his hand, knowing the question that was coming. “Don’t ask me. I do not know when I realized you were out there, in the shadows.”
All the fear has left me now
I’m not frightened anymore
It’s my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
It’s my mouth that pushes out this breath
Hermione moved around him to stand in his sight of vision.
He looked up at her, remembering her face only slightly. After she and the rest of the Trio graduated, he had only seen her once — the night of the final battle, which was two years after their graduation. It was her body falling to the ground that he remembered seeing; falling from the Killing Curse Draco had hit her with. That was five years ago.
And if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
“I am weary, Hermione.” He did not bother with formalities; he felt there was no longer a need. He sensed she had been watching him for so long, he felt a comfortable familiarity with her now, not really knowing why, but not caring either. “I had hoped to find some peace, some…closure after it was all finished. Yet all I found…all I have is…emptiness. I feel empty and I am tired.” He looked to her. Her eyes glittered with the reflection of the fire. He knew what she was; he had known from the moment he began to sense her these last few years, and he realized how she had survived the Killing Curse.
Companion to our demons
They will dance and we will play
With chains, candles, and cloth
Making darkness in the day
“This world has taken much from you, this life, this time,” she said as she approached him. “That is why I chose to leave. There was nothing for me here. My parents had been killed. And after all was said and done, after Voldemort was defeated, I knew that Harry and Ron would go about their lives. And then, what of me? Where was I to go, what was I to do? Hermione Granger was dead long before that vampire took her life, so long before.” She whispered.
It will be easy
To look in or out
Upstream or down
Without a thought
“And now,” he asked, “what have you now?”
And if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
“I don’t know yet. What I have will depend on you.” She held out her hand to him. He looked at her outstretched arm, beckoning for him to grasp her cold hands. “I know what you have lost, Severus. I have heard you all these years. Leave regret behind you and come with me, please.”
Peace in the struggle to find peace
Comfort on the way to comfort
He closed his eyes, so close to finding peace, yet too high a price for it. “I will not be the harbinger of death to any more innocent lives. I have grown as tired of death as I have of life, Hermione.”
She smiled and cocked her head to one side.
“And what sort of a Potions Master cannot make his own Blood Replenishing Potion?”
His eyes grew wide, as he realized how she had lived all these years. She always had been a smart young woman. She had adjusted the potion to suit her needs and lived without having to kill. It was time he found peace. He took her hand and stood, looking down at her for a moment, before she leaned into him and gave him the peace he had desired for so long.
And if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
“Albus?” said Minerva from behind him, where he had been looking out the window for some time. “What is it?”
He smiled and turned to her.
“She has come for him,” he said somberly.
“And?” Minerva sobbed.
“And they have gone, together. They will finally be at peace, Minerva.”

I hope you enjoyed this. In this story I saw Severus as a man who had lost so much from such an early age. I felt that after the war he desired the one thing he never really had which was peace and comfort and Hermione offered that to him.

Very interesting tale, girl. Nicely crafted. I think the sentence that really says it all is: “I am weary, Hermione.”

As a rule I don't write or read angst, but I feel that I can get around it by making them happy in the end, dead or alive. I know exactly what you mean though. Thanks for reading this, I appreciate you taking the time to do so.
man these words sound familiar. i'm going to have to look up the song and have a listen! good first chapter.
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
I'm sure you have heard the song. It was very popular and so was the artist in the early to mid 90's. I'm glad you liked the chapter.
Short and sweet... or is that bittersweet? So glad they found each other. :)
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. It was a little bittersweet, but they did find each other. I've been on a short story kick lately both reading and writing them.
great short story. straight an to the point. how did the headmaster and minerva known she was visiting? was it the wards able to detect. would be interesting if you made a sequel. but that would be up to you dear author.
i think i've read some of your other stories. waiting for more stories. P

I figured Dumbledore would know she had been coming around, since he seems to know everything that goes on about the place. I don't know if I'd do more with this, as the songs I chose was the first and last in the album, and I saw it as the first being her realization that she wanted to possess him, and the last his realization of wanting peace and comfort. Thank you for taking the time to read this. A friend gave me a suggestion of something perhaps for Halloween. So you'll see more of me.
wow! what an amazing beginning. waiting for more. patty

Oooh I like it. I predict "Shadows of the Night" will be featured in another chapter, no? :) *goes in search of "Possession"*
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
Wow, I haven't heard any Pat Benatar in a while either. I'm glad you enjoyed this first part. The next part is actually another song from the same album as this one. I hope you will enjoy it.
Response from Tarah_Fae (Reviewer)
Man, Pat and Sarah rock my proverbial socks. How about "Building a Mystery"? Will that one feature? *harrasses author* :)
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
LOL, how about Fumbling towards Ecstasy?
Response from Tarah_Fae (Reviewer)
Naaaaaah! That'd never fit in! :D *found "Possession"!**gleeeeees!*
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
Have a listen at Fumbling towards Ecstasy and when you read the final chapter it will make sense.
Response from Tarah_Fae (Reviewer)
Sorry! I was being sarcastic. :) I can see where you're going and I love it! I can hardly wait!
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
Ack, sarcasm doesn't translate well in writing does it? LOL, I'll post the last bit in the morning.
Though, to me, Possession has been something of the Mulder/Scully ship, it works here, and I love the second chapter. Thank you for writing!
Dark and happy - perfect!
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
Thanks. I was in the mood for something dark, but needed my happy fix too. I'm glad you liked it.
this was an awesome plot line, AG. you did a bang up job on this one. very well done. Tamara
Response from ancientgirl (Author of Possessing Ecstasy)
Thank you. I love these two songs that inspired the fiction. I've always thought them both to be very haunting, and fitting for a vampire plot.
this sure is different from your usual. I like it. I can't wait to see what the next chapter holds. Tamara
