Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.

A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.

Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Sooo...here comes my review! :)I don't have a good feeling about Albus' absence...hope they'll find him save at Hagrid's. But I also feel with Severus. What a stupid timing! :D Hadn't the great Dumbledore gone missing at another time?^^I liked the way you had Snape reacting to the short visit of Gareth. His cold reaction, shows that there are still things about Snape, that he has to change. His old personality took a glimpse, that's good. Although you write him extremely well (I'm sure I already mentioned it) it would have been a terrible mistake to let him react too grateful and kind of normal. It's only been a year, or probably less, that Severus was able to enjoy his free life and to find his place and his warm side. So, it would be kind of weird if he were warmed up during this small period of time...he would have kind of had to boil - I hope you get what I'm saying...I'm trying to describe my German thought, which are rather difficult to translate. Whatever. Well, you once again proved, how good you are with Snape's character or/and with the minds of people. Btw the memory of Poppy taking over Severus classes and his reaction to it back then, was quite funny, and sooo snapish ;)hope to read more soon! (and perhaps an update at CASG?^^)

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

It's so funny -- part way through your review, I was thinking how it read like German, but in English, then a couple sentences later, you said you were trying to describe your German thought -- aber keine Sorge! Ich habe es schon verstanden! :-) I'm glad that you like Snape's in-character-ness. It was actually kind of a struggle for him not to be less civil than he was, even though a part of him was glad to have Gareth's apology and so forth, but he also realized that he should give some kind of reciprocating appreciative gesture, so he managed a single little pat on the arm. He also didn't like being hugged by him in front of Poppy -- yeah, awkward! LOL!Having Poppy remind Severus of that has been sitting around waiting for a time to enter the story, and this seemed like a good opportunity, and kinda amusing, I hoped!I have the next chapter written, but it's not polished, and I want to work on Charming a Scottish Garden this weekend, if I can, but hopefully I'll get an update for one or both of those stories up in the next few days. (It's a holiday weekend here, so Monday is a big holiday -- and since I live in "the federal city," businesses are all closed, except touristy ones, for the most part.)Thanks very much for the review! I appreciate it!

Yay, chapter two. Still as great the second time around as it was the first. tee hee. This is an interesting chapter because it shows Snape easing back into life and making friends. Sure, Pomona was a colleague before the fall of the DL but now he can try to relate to her on a different level. And Gareth ... YUM! Any chapter he's in is bound to be a good one. And can I just say that I LOVE Twiskett. tee heeTTFN,the GLM

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad it's still as tasty! It's polished up quite a bit, too, of course. Adjusted the seasoning, so to speak. Twiskett is fun to write, so I'm happy you like him, too. Thanks for the review!

Wow..... that was powerful.... yes yes, I said I wasn't going to read it yet... apparently I had no idea what I was going to do... and here I am.Very powerful, very moving, very gripping... so much emotion in this. Beautiful how Hogwarts honorrs the losses of others and the devotion of their own. I especially love the bronze dragon... love dragons - D&D lore, Bronze Dragons are "good" - so that's pretty interesting to me.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Huh, didn't know that about D&D lore! Interesting to learn that! Dragons are cool! I do think you'll enjoy the fic, even if you occasionally want to toss a bread roll at Severus (or maybe a water balloon -- your choice! LOL!). It really is different, I think, from any of the other three long fics (RaM, AAoL, and DD), that you've read of mine (or maybe I'm mistaken or deluding myself! LOL!), but the pace, topics, themes, focus . . . Anyway, I do hope you enjoy it! No need to "swallow it whole," either, especially since I'm still writing & posting! It seemed fitting to have the memorials appear in the prologue here, tying it in with the past and giving it a foundation there. Thanks!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

The memorials are stunning... beautiful.

I'm so glad you updated!! yay! but I'm very very worried! please, please tell me Albus is fine, pleaseeeee. This a great chapter, I love how their relationship is developing, they are great together and so HOT!Please, please update soon, I can't wait to know Albus is fine, poor Minerva! Sam

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter and the hotness of Severus & Poppy together. ;-)I hope you won't have to wait too long for an update, but you know how RL can be -- it interferes with fanfic writing! haha!Thank you for all your reviews -- they're very encouraging, especially when RL is kinda difficult and it would be easier to veg out in front of the television than to gather the energy to write! So thank you very much! :-)

Response from doralupin87 (Reviewer)

I know RL can be a bit too REAL sometimes, but that's why writing or drawing in my case it's so good, it's an escape, a way to forget about RL if only for a little while, so none of the veg out in front of the televion stuff!! You are a brilliant writer. I'll be waiting, not so patiently, for the next update!Sam

I like the mood in this story, and I like that you are not rushing throug it ( a quality in all your stories I think)- now looking forward to enjoying a long story

Thank you,

! It should be a long, leisurely, but hopefully very enjoyable, journey of discovery with Severus. Thanks for reviewing!

Yipee skipee!  I saw that you started posting this.  I look forward to everything. =o)  Goodie, goodie.

Oh, yay!  I'm so glad to see some beginnings of reslolution for Severus and Hermione.  Apologies and all that.  It's another example of how Sev's grown. It's nice to have her back in the story, although I do find Poppy a lovely heroine.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks, Writer Merrin! I'm glad you liked the conversation between Severus & Hermione. It was one they needed to have -- and Hermione needed some advice from an older-sister figure in order to help her sort out some of her confusion. She'll appear again! Thanks for the review! :-)

I am intrigued.  I keep trying to think of characters that might fit the description of the attacker!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

It's a broad field! Glad you're intrigued! :-) Thanks!

10/10

very sweet.  Those little moments when you describe Severus' thoughts and feelings, what is going on in his head, are always very good.  His feelings and his mood can shift around but he's taking more time to listen and to think it through before completely shutting down.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad you like the peeks into Severus's thoughts. He is feeling less under siege these days, despite the vigilante, and feeling both more like a member of a community and as though he has genuine friends and a kind of ersatz family. That gives him the peace to be able to reflect and not merely react. Thanks very much for your review!

10/10

very good.  I love it that Severus has a little cousin and that he's able to empathize and even give him some encouragement that maybe Severus never had at that age.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Poppy almost pointed out Eoghan to Severus back at the Merlins award dinner, but got cut off just as she was about to say something. LOL! So he's been waiting a while to be introduced! :-) Thanks for the review!

Okay, you totally blind-sided me!  Gertrude?  Really??  You love torturing that poor woman don't you?  I'm glad Severus and Poppy figured out a way to hopefully clear her.  I hope the next chapter has everyone at the Ministry apologizing for this horrible mistake and releasing her immediately.  I love the way Severus is opening up and sharing the good and bad with Poppy.  That will create a nice firm foundation for their relationship.  Glad it wasn't Prunella.  Thank you.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

LOL! Yep, Gertrude -- motive, opportunity, and about the right build to match the blurry figure. It doesn't sound sensible to any of her family or friends, but for someone who's doing the investigating, they've gotta look at someone like that.Yes, not Prunella! haha! Thanks for the review -- glad you enjoyed the chapter!

Aww, the lilacs are so thoughtful.  It appears that being a little romantic is coming a bit easier to him than he'd thought it would.  I think Poppy must be very inspirational.  I loved her thoughts about the relationship.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! Yes, I think that even though he isn't finding the logistics exactly easy, he's having an easier time than he'd thought he would. Give him the opportunity, and he shines! Thanks for the review!

Love the note and that Poppy charms a bit of lilac to wear and think of Severus. Ooh and Severus is carrying a sprig of lilac too. (So sweet! - not a term I ever thought I'd apply to Snape - but you've made it work and work brilliantly!) The 'stupid juice' line made me smile!Uh oh - arrested Gertrude... what are they thinking? I hope Severus can remember what might clear her. Oooh Poppy remembers - what a sleuth she's turning into. Outstanding plot twist. Oh and I love the ongoing guessing game and the teasing it brings out between Severus and Poppy. Can't wait to see her new strategy. (At the moment, my money's on Poppy being right first - she's become a regular Mrs. Columbo.)

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Haha -- glad you enjoyed the "stupid juice" line. :-)Well, not exactly arrested, but they're getting anxious to find the person, so they're going to look at even the less likely people if they have motive and opportunity, and Gertrude had both, as far as they could tell.Glad you like the ongoing name-game. :-)Thanks for reviewing!

So it's Minerva at the door with news. Very intriguing interruption. I love that Severus is trying to protect Poppy that's so sweet and it's good that he understands when she says she'll worry more not knowing what's going on. I really loved the exchange between Minerva and Poppy after Severus left too! Minerva's light teasing, and Poppy's explanations and asking her not to make Severus feel uncomfortable. (Minerva can do that at times, can't she? )I also really enjoyed Minerva' sobservation about how Severus was with Poppy in her presence. Moody of course in Moody and he's not what you would call nice or even tactful, but there's something about him I still like and you convey all the levels of his (and everyone's personalitites so well.) The notion of the ministry copying memories is brilliant! So interesting the Moody brought it to show them and get their input. Severus' insights of course were fascinating. (If I recall correctly the loud crack of apparation is also tellingi as to the person's magical ability - unless of course they're manipulating that to be less skilled.)I love that this chapter ends with Poppy and Severus too. Plus I get to read more right away. :)

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Minerva does occasionally speak without thinking through the impact she might have, but fortunately, not often! Yes, Moody has had a hard life, and he's not exactly a nice person, but there are a lot of factors that went into making him the man he is. He may seem lacking in compassion in some respects, but he does have some. It helps him cope with his own traumas when he puts the notion of "psychological trauma" at a distance. He toughs it out, and that affects how he views others. The sound of Apparition simply indicates how good the person is at Apparating -- people have different strengths. Like some people are weight lifters, some are swimmers, some sprint, some run marathons. So Although someone with a lot of magical power and ability is more likely to be able to Disapparate less noisily and be able to Apparate long distances, a wizard could be really magically strong at other things, but still not be particularly good at Apparition. Someone who can Disapparate quietly and Apparate long distances will be fairly powerful, but the opposite isn't necessarily so.Glad you liked ending with Poppy and Severus. :-)Thanks for the review!

Response from OldFashionedGrl (Reviewer)

Thanks for the apparation explanation. It's helpful to know you you see it. Also, enjoy reading more of your take on Moody. I think that's how I felt about him without ever thinking it in exactly those terms. Makes perfect sense.

First of all, thank you for continuing this story. I know you don't get nearly the reviews you deserve, but I, for one, am thoroughly enjoying the story and am anxious to see how it progresses.Poppy really does take care of everyone and she does it very well. And her conversation with Minerva was great. I'm glad they let Gertie go home and that Siofre was able to stop them from giving her the potion. Smart cookie!!!A dinner party with all those guests, plus more, I'm assuming, should be very interesting. Quin and Severus in the same room with Poppy (even though I know Poppy doesn't feel that way for Quin, even after their one night) ... yeah, this is gonna be gooood! Thanks again for posting and for taking the time to write the story! Hugsthe GLM

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

There's quite a bit of story left, threads that were begun earlier that continue, but I'm wondering whether the natural lifespan of the fic has been reached before its conclusion. I'm glad to hear that you're not tired of it and are interested still in where it's going!Yes, Poppy does take care of everyone and makes sure they're well and well-cared for.Gertrude has been eliminated as a suspect, and we can wait and see where the investigation goes from there!Yes, the dinner party will be interesting with all the various characters -- a different textured chapter than this one and some of the other recent ones, certainly! Thanks very much for reviewing! I'm glad you're enjoying it! :-)

Oh I so love the description of the shell cottage and the little bit of the ocean we get. Storms at sea are very emotional, and powerful, at least to me. I loved that cozy feeling of being in a small house while a beastly storm raged all around, especially a loud one! But then I'm weird, I like hurricanes.

It took me a while to find my 'relaxed-post-disaster-Severus' voice ... I'm so used to his normal snide and cutting tone and of course, this is a different Severus and I like seeing how he's changed and how he continues to change and the struggle within himself to hold on to his insecurities ... boy is that familiar! *whistles innocently*

Its easy to relate to both of them, especially Poppy's fear of falling in love with him, fear of rejection and impending doooom! Very easy to relate to that.

I also appreciate the history you give us on Duster and more history on Minerva's time as a youth - specifically between her and Poppy - that is a friendship I really enjoy reading about. It was interesting to me that Poppy could talk about Malcolm so much and Severus not instantly jump to jealousy.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Glad you liked the oceany storm and the cozy shell cottage. (The shell cottage first appears in Charming a Scottish Garden, and Siofre tells Johannes more about it. There's also more description of it, but I didn't want to get too repetitive.)It is different writing (or reading) the different Snapes! I enjoy writing snarky, nasty, insecure, hair-trigger-temper Snape, too, but it's also enjoyable to imagine how he would have changed in some ways and yet what core qualities would remain that still make him Severus Snape. Of course, with Poppy, he's at his most relaxed, so he'll be different with her than he would be with others even at this point -- although he allows himself to relax and be vulnerable with Minerva and Gareth, each in different ways, too. What with Malcolm being dead, Poppy never having dated him, and him being Gertrude's late husband, Severus has less incentive for jealousy, so it's easier for him just to listen to her talk about him as a friend from her past. Of course, the implication there was that Malcolm would sometimes accompany her and Murdoch on their walks, but not specifically only the two of them.I enjoy writing Minerva & Poppy's friendship, too. It's funny, but when I read bits of RaM with the two of them, bits of AAoL, DD, and now this story, there's a consistency in the relationship that I hadn't planned when I was first writing RaM & AAoL. That's a good thing, of course! But I'm surprised at how naturally the friendship and their interactions appear consistent in the writing, if you know what I mean. Thanks for reviewing -- I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

Doh! Of course, I got Malcolm and Murdoch confused. Silly me!

A lovely pastoral interlude for Poppy and Severus!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! The next chapter is more "plotty," but I thought they deserved some time just to relax!

Interesting chapter! I love this pair of Severus and Poppy so much, but somehow I'm still scared for them...so when Sev seems to get well along with Aine, discussing her books to start with and then gallantly held out her chair for her, fear struck my heart. Fear that Severus, still learning about the world of emotions, might become enamoured of Aine. So it was such a relieve that his thoughts turned staight back to Poppy and I hope, strongly hope, that my fears are baseless. And actually I should trust all the signals of love and the strong relation between them , which you've so warmly portrayed in many of the previous as well as this chapter :-) Interesting I found especially Aine's divination, also because the age-old dilemma of 'nonsense versus validity', that will always keep surrounding the work of the 'seeers', was strongly brought across through Snape's initial scepticism and later his amazement at Aine's insightful findings. I loved reading this chapter, made my night, and am eagerly looking forward to the next chapters about the party! Thanks once again!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, under other circumstances, Severus could probably develop something of a crush on Aine, but he has something far stronger with Poppy, as you noted.Aine has a certain kind of ethics, too, about what she will say about what she sees. She often will see far more than she will report, but she feels that too much knowledge about the future isn't a good thing for most people -- they should have a bit of forewarning, but no specifics, or they might make even worse decisions based on what they think they know. Even in this "superficial" reading, she saw more than she will tell Severus -- she's also very aware that she can only see glimpses, parts of the future or strands of possible futures, so she believes that the more she says of what she sees, the more her audience will trust those details and not understand that she's only seeing a part of the future or a possible future.I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! You're very welcome for it. I hope to write another one this week. We'll see how that goes! Thanks very much for your reviews! :-)

Response from Mars_M (Reviewer)

Yes, you are right, it was beautifully subtly written, how Aine very carefully told what she told and clearly also kept things to herself and then later, with more privacy, told Snape just that little bit more to convince him. It was very enjoyable to be somehow involved in the process and see the working of their minds (a bit, of course). Great to know that the next chapter should be flowing from your pen so very soon. I wish you a lot of enjoyment and success writing it!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks!

Helena became a suspect in my mind chapters ago when she asked Severus for a dinner duty schedule change. I'm hoping its not her but things don't look too good right now. Loved Moody's comments about Siofre and Johannes. He has them pegged well. Glad Poppy went with Severus. That should show him she wants to be with him in the tough times as well as the good.
I see there is another chapter posted. I'm going to try and exert some control and not "gobble it up" right away.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

There are a lot of people who might raise suspicions, aren't there?Yes, Poppy will stick by him -- and Severus will try not to keep things from her, learning from Albus's keeping things fom Minerva that that's not such a good idea. Have fun exerting that control! (I always tell myself that about that one more piece of pizza! LOL!)

Excellent chapter. (as was the last, but didn't have time to review)  The only problem w/ your being back to posting on this fic w/ some regularity is that is makes me ravenous for EVEN MORE!!! AND EVEN FASTER!!! And thus leaves me frustrated!  Poppy and Severus are indeed falling in love not lust, and being so sweet about it!And even a brief appearance by Minerva and Albus is good--no matter how many other great characters you write, they will always be my favorites!  W/ Quin next in line. ;-)I agree w/ those who've said I wouldn't want to be the Ministry flunky who has to explain this to Siofre, Albus or Minerva!  And Hermione re-appears--yay!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'll do my best not to leave you frustrated for too long -- but then again, as soon as you've read the next chapter, you'll be back to having that craving again! I'm glad that you are enjoying the brief appearances by Albus and Minerva. I do enjoy writing them, too, and I especially enjoy writing Minerva in her friendship with Severus. Their interactions are good to write.Yep, I think that Auror Plummer & her assistant will be glad that they at least didn't bring Gertrude to a cell for questioning! Having those three looking at you expecting explanation would not be fun! They're getting a bit desperate to find the person who's doing this.Yep, we'll have a little Hermione next chapter. :-)Thanks for the review!

I would not want to be the witch or wizard that has to explain to Minerva, Albus, and Siofre why Gertie Gamp was ever considered a potential suspect. Nope, not gonna poke that one with a ten foot pole! I love the developement of the relationship with Severus and Poppy. They're both falling for each other and the slow pace makes it even sweeter. awwww. Okay, Snape needs to look at more "girl" names that begin with "P." He's not doing so well with his choices. I mean ... Poppy Prunella? What mother in her right mind would put those two names together??? eeeep Hope you don't make us wait long for an update. I'm very excited to see where you go from here. You had me on the edge of my seat, literally, when Gareth was telling Snape about him mum. I wanted to help him get help. haha

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

"Okay, Snape needs to look at more "girl" names that begin with "P." He's not doing so well with his choices. I mean ... Poppy Prunella? What mother in her right mind would put those two names together??? eeeep"LOL! He's thinking they probably went with a floral name or a semi-religious/pious name, since her sister's name is "Violet Mary," but he certainly does need to think outside the box here! Haha!I'm glad you were on the edge of your seat. I thought about breaking the chapter earlier and leaving more of a cliffie, but then I thought I couldn't do that to you all -- you'd be picturing poor Gertrude in chains or stocks or something, and worrying that she'd be a suspect for a long time -- until the person struck again, anyway, which is occurring with greater frequency now.Yes, I'm sure that when Minerva and Siofre heard the news, both of them were outraged! And then when Albus finally gets there, well, they'll be glad they gave Gertie a cup of tea and a biscuit and didn't put her in a nasty cell for questioning! Thanks very much for the review -- I hope to update at least by next weekend, sooner if I can.

Not Gertrude!! please! that Minsitry! They are so lucky Malcolm is dead!. I hope everything is cleared up soon, I hate to think of Gertrude sitting in the Ministry being questioned. I loved the first part of the chapter, Severus's notes to Poppy were so cute and sweet, but Prunella! really!. He's not very good at this guessing game!, I'm very curious about Poppy's middle name, can't remember if you said it in another fic!!. I'm really shock, I can't believe they would suspect Gertrude, poor woman has had enough! I hope Severus is right about the arm of the attacker and that Gertrude is cleared of this mess. Can't wait for the next chapter!Sam

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

When I was writing this chapter, I thought of you, and I thought, oh, no, Sam's not gonna like this at all! But you don't need to worry -- Gertrude's being treated okay, and, well, don't worry! Yes, Severus is thinking that Poppy's parents either went with another floral-type name (like "Posy" or "Prunella" -- LOL!), since her sister's name is "Violet Mary," or maybe something old-fashioned and quasi-pious, and he's not doing very well so far. Nope, I don't believe that her middle name has been mentioned elsewhere, just the different versions of Severus's middle name. Thanks much for the review!

Response from doralupin87 (Reviewer)

I'm glad she's being treated okay then, I was a bit worried about that, and you are right I didn't like it at all!, but it does make some sense to suspect her, she's powerful enough and has a great motive, but I don't think she'd be so sloppy in her job as to be seen at all, and she'll never miss her target, even with just one arm!. Thanks for telling me that she's fine. Great, brilliant chapter!! Sam

Stupid juice, lol. I have lots of mornings like that. Good thing I don't have to brew potions.More excitement this chapter. I wonder if there's a specific reason they suspect Gertrude besides the cloak and shoes. They had agreed that the attacker moved like a younger person. Hmm, Hermione... nope, too sensible, and not likely to attack little old ladies. And, yay! Poppy's finally ready to lower her defenses. Severus carrying a sprig of her lilac in his pocket is so sweet and romantic. Even while he's snarling at his students, ha ha!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

What they actually thought was that it was either a witch, of any age, or a relatively young man, not an older wizard. That was their impression, anyway! Yep, Hermione would not be likely to attack little old ladies -- and she'd be better at it! LOL!Yeah, some days, I feel like someone must have slipped me some stupid juice, too! haha! And Severus was somewhat more patient with them than in earlier times, or trying to be, but anyone's patience would be taxed by his morning of stupid-juiced dunderheads! ;PThanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed the chapter. :-)

this was as always a well written chapter. I am not a good detective so I don't have a clou. I take it it is a person we allready know, and if it is a woman - hm. I suspect Bellatrix and maybe one of her healers, there were something slightly weird going on there, but I guess it is a stupid idea. Looking forward as usual for updates.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad that you're enjoying the story still! There are a number of possibilities at this point, aren't there?I hope to update within the next seven days or so!Thanks very much for the review! I appreciate it.
