Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.

A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.

Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Hi ... You are not updating too quickly.  It's nice for once not to have a story delayed.  Please keep the pace of updates as is.  I'm enjoying the story very much.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

That's why I wanted to get a chunk of a first draft done before I started uploading. Life has been rocky lately, and I've had long periods when I haven't been able to write -- I'm sure that it would be very frustrating to wait months in between chapters! Eeep! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it! Thanks for reviewing!

So very curious about this ritual as Poppy being the sympathetic..... very curious.... and glad Severus learned two manners... at least writing people thank you notes.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, Severus is making a really good start on his new life, and he's starting off on a good note! (bad pun, sorry!)You may want to read "The Sorting of Suzie Sefton" here now  -- it wouldn't "fit" into LVS itself, but it's a fun little story & we get a different view of Snape's illness in it, and a different view of Slytherin House, as well. I think you'd enjoy it. :-)

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

Ahh, okay, the wee one that barfs everywhere.... yeah, just what I want to read while I'm eating my lunch.... heh.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

LOL! She does do more than barf -- although, of course, she does begin to feel that that's all she'll be known for! This is an ideal time to read it, since the first part of LVS is still fresh in your mind.

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

OOOH! An owl! I've never seen the owls before! *hops up and down*

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

The owl is very cute! I thought you'd like her!

First I have to say thank you for not sorting Quin. I have him pegged a certain way in my mind and would have had a hard time changing it. I think Hogwarts was the perfect result. Its good to see Severus somewhat relaxed and having a good time especially around Gertrude and Quin. His conversation with the MacAirt witches was fascinating. I like Hafrena's bluntness, which I imagine Severus appreciated too. Did feel a little sorry for Aine though. She got more information than she expected when she "read" Severus. It must have been quite a shock. Loved the way you contrasted that serious conversation with the ordinary fun of taking pictures and playing Charades. Thank you.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, Quin-the-Unsortable! I'm glad you found that perfect for him! Yes, it was quite a shock to Aine, although she's got a lot of strength and resiliency, and so she was able to put it aside until she could actually speak to Severus. I'm glad you liked the balance in the chapter -- and having Gertrude & Quin both on Severus's team! Thanks!

I'm pleased Hermione cleared the air with Severus. It was stilted and awkward between them but seemed very sincere. Given their respective personalities and histories, I can't imagine that conversation being anything else, but Hermione has never been a coward. I hope they mend their relationship. I still just love the metal image of Poppy's waddling duck patronus. Cute! And I also enjoy the little peeks at the friendship between Minerva and Poppy. You can see the strength and warmth of their relationship, even when talking shop.I hope Albus's aged cupid routine is not quite one horror after another, but I do expect it to be very entertaining.Sorry I'm so far behind on chapters, but I'm going to try to catch up tonight!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

How fun to have a bunch of chapters to catch up on! It was good of Hermione to approach Severus as she did, and like you say, she was never a coward. It brought them closer to being back on good terms with each other -- and it shows the depth of their friendship that Severus would listen to her and accept her apology, and then offer one of his own.I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! Thanks for the review!

*snip*“I have no doubt that she will hover sufficiently for your satisfaction tomorrow, Severus,” Albus said with a twinkle. “I’ll sit with you a little while, until you fall asleep, at least. Then you can feel properly hovered over, hmm?”I just love that wizard... that is all.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad!

*snip*“But Daddy said I could have a kitten,” Severus slurred. “He promised.”LOLOLOLol I just LOVE THAT!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yeah, the Head of Slytherin wanted a kitten! hee!Glad it gave you a laugh!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

*snip*“So, the lift again?” Albus asked hopefully. He liked his gadgets, and he felt this one had been particularly ingenious. Pulleys were such great fun.EVEN FUNNIER! HAHAHAHA! You clown!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

EWWWWWWWW, Severus' mother's family are HORRID! *shudders*

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

*snip*Then he felt magic flowing into him, healing, warm, liquid magic, washing away the last of the Dark snake, the last of the poison left him by his Dark master, whom he had betrayed, and he felt someone there beside him, someone whose magic was cleansing him, the remnants of Darkness leaving him, and her pure, light magic entering him and strengthening him. Another kind, good witch, someone who didn’t think he was a nasty snake or a dirty half-blood, someone who cared about him. Awwww, he really has been reduced to something like a child... poor guy.

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

*snip*“Ah, Severus, my boy,” he said softly, “will I ever be able to stop worrying about you?”And here I thought you couldn't make me love Albus more... and then you go and do something like that... and I just melt... has there ever been a kinder, more perfect man? Well, a mortal one anyway?

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, he has been. And yes, his mother wasn't at her best there, and her father was dreadful. In a way, Severus was kind of reborn when he survived Nagini's attack, and now he's beginning a new life. And at his lowest ebb, he does fall back into his childhood and into a childlike state of mind. But very good for him in this state that he feels Poppy's great care for him, and how her magic was cleansing him, even if he never remembers it.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

And here I thought you couldn't make me love Albus more... and then you go and do something like that... and I just melt... has there ever been a kinder, more perfect man? Well, a mortal one anyway? I'm glad that it struck the right note for you. Albus is a wonderful, generous, caring man.

*snip*Minerva watched, her knuckles white, as Poppy stiffened in reaction to the venom extract entering her system. Poppy let out a long breath and relaxed consciously despite the sensations that assaulted her. It felt as though there were fire ants circulating with her magic, stinging her several times a second, the prickling and burning jumping unpredictably from one area to another, and then just sweeping through her like a fiery tide ebbing and flowing, now stronger, now weaker. She concentrated on breathing calmly, and she felt Melina’s magic begin to treat her, little soothing strands spreading through her and deadening the effects of the extracted magical toxins. Very, very vivid to me, but then again, fire ants are one of the few banes of my existence - and I doubt any Brit can fully appreciate how bloody awful they are - but great imagery!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

I'm also very interested in how this bond is going to affect Poppy and Severus.... wondering if this is a permanent magical bond, like Minerva and Albus have.... quite interesting.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

As a superlative Healer, Melina would be able to avoid having any bond similar to the one between Albus and Minerva arise out of this. Whether there are other effects, direct or indirect, you will see!Glad you liked the imagery. Fire ants are really nasty, I agree!Thank you!

This was all very interesting.... the whole ritual, the healing affects and such...Quite gripping. I did feel sorry for Albus being told he can't help - when all his life, everything has relied on him... and in this case he just wants to help and feels helpless, that he can't do much.Again, Poppy and Melina are brilliant. I do love your Poppy.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, Albus does get that feeling sometimes. It's hard to move into a different role, especially when, as you say, everything relied on him, and now he can't do much. But he's also good about leaving it to the people who can help, even if it gives him a twinge.I'm glad you love my Poppy!

Wow! That was a fun and steamy chapter. All that brewing and grinding, tee hee. I love the use of the innuendos! I thought it was bad when Gareth showed up with Poppy but then Minerva arrived at a very bad ime, too. It's just not Snape's night for having a little bit of fun with his "love." I did notice that he called her "my love" wheeeeee!!!!!!It will be interesting to see how Poppy and Severus interact once she returns and I wanna know what happened to Albus!!!!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

No, poor Severus just has lousy luck trying to have some private time with Poppy in his private lab, even though only a handful of people know where it is. Poor guy.Yes, that little endearment did slip out during a particularly warm moment! I don't think he even realized it! LOL!Thanks for the review! I'm hoping to get a few chapters written, then I'll post the next chapter. I'm also trying to get some more of CSG written, so hopefully, it won't be long for you to wait!

10/10

OldFashionedGrl

ooh... I had hoped things might heat up a bit for them while they let the potions brew. :) I was almost as upset as Severus at the interruption. It's so nice to see both Severus and Poppy being so open and honest with each other. Severus about his office, Poppy about her thoughts on the way he treated Garath. Also, their discussing the past and her taking his classes. Great background! I can so see Severus saying that - Poppy remembering the incident vividely and Severus now seeing he was wrong. Great details! He's still touchy about the brewing which is totally Severus and watching how compitent Poppy is is good for him. I'm excited for where things will go next.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad that you liked their interactions in this chapter. I thought that was a fun little detail, with her taking the classes and him being snide about it back at the time. Thanks for the review!

Snape sure does seem to have rotten luck sometimes. Just when ya think he's on the mend, you find out he's worse than originally thought. It was a good thing Albus thought to get the fangs and venom sacs. And anytime Gareth McGonagall is in a chapter, it's bound to be a good one. I think he's going to be very good for Snape. In fact, all of the McGonagall clan (including Albus) will do him a world of good. Thanks for posting the chapters here!Cheers, the GLM

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Poor Severus. He has a long healing period ahead of him, in many ways. Having Gareth's friendship will certainly play a role in his recovery. Thanks for reviewing!

*snip* Severus didn’t care if he sang falsetto, as long as the answer was correct.*snicker*

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

*snip*Severus blinked. He didn’t think that students normally turned yellow with fear. White, perhaps, or red with embarrassment. He blinked again, and Twiffle looked normal once more. “Adequate response, Twiffle.” It was far too warm in the room. “Preparation.” He paused, taking a breath. “Preparation . . . proper . . . prop . . . prep—” Something was wrong. His hands tingled, his vision was blurred, and he felt as though he were burning up. Something was very wrong.Severus pushed up on the desk, trying to stand, but he immediately fell back into his chair, his hands trembling uselessly. An electric surge seemed to go through him, and his hands clenched the air spasmodically. A rushing, like the wind or a river, voices calling, then nothing but incoherent noise and internal fire. That was really interesting - not that I wish harm to our dear Potions master, but this was really well done - the lead up about how sick he felt and him speaking to the students, and then, having some kind of attack, really gripping..

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thank you! Pacing something of that sort is enjoyable. I'm glad you liked it and found it gripping! :-)

*snip*As he opened the door, Hermione reached up and touched his shoulder, then she stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek. He barely had time to be startled by that when she was out the door and hurrying away. His fingertips went to the spot where her lips had just brushed his skin; he felt his face warming as he incongruously thought that he was glad he had shaved that morning. He closed his door with a gentle click, still smiling.

Dawwwwwwwwwwww, it seems Hermione is going to have to pull teeth to get him to be open with her about his feelings, just like Minerva had to do the same to get Albus to open up! RAR! Gryffie women are STRONG! *Roars*

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Perhaps! She certainly has developed that crush on him she dismissed in AAoL, for sure!It is very good for Severus to feel that there are some good people who care about him. It's not just good for his recovery, but also for his sense of self-worth.

Dawwwwwww, Hermione brings munchies and makes Severus grin! I'm still loving Poppy and appreciating Melina more - though she was pretty awesome in DD. And, appreciating the new information about Filius and also appreciating Severus trying to be a "good" boy and not brood - good on him.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Severus is trying, and as you know, the worse you feel physically, the more of a challenge it can be -- especially if you're at all prone to brooding, as Severus is!Glad you're loving Poppy. She's become one of my favorite characters to write.Melina is pretty awesome, and you get to see her show more of her stuff later on.Thanks very much!

Great chapter! These bites are nasty, aren't they?
It's cute to see Severus interacting in this way with Eoghan... wish I could see a photo of both.

Author's Response: They are certainly not fun to have!

I wish I could give you a photo of them both! I think they are probably cute to see together.

Thanks!

Hm, brewing and brewing indeed! *lol* Nice chapter, and very nice Poppy-Severus action - in every sense. I parcticularly like the acutal preparing and brewing part, as it shows much about Severus's change of character and demeanour.
And Minerva interrupted AGAIN! ;o)))

Author's Response: Yeah, Minerva's kinda making a habit of that, isn't she! Let's hope it doesn't persist!

Glad you enjoyed the chapter! Thanks for the review! :-)

Twiskett's extra duty is cute. I always wondered how the owls managed in the dungeons... now I know ;o)... it's also nice to see this tentative friendship between Gareth and Severus continue. I'm not quite sure yet if I have grasped the motivation Gareth has for it, but he makes a really good job of it.

Author's Response: Part of it is that Gareth has been away for so many years, and although he does still have a few British friends, he doesn't have many. He likes Snape, he finds him bright and amusing, and he has an admiration for the way Severus handled their first encounters and the fact that he didn't try to excuse his behavior or lie about it (vis a vis Gertrude). He's seen how hard it is for Severus, and he wants him to succeed -- to become the better Severus -- he figures that it can only help him (Severus) if he has friendship and support. He also just finds him amusing ;-)

I enjoy writing Twiskett, so I find myself finding little things for him to do! lol

Thanks!

I'm going to try to post between 10 and 12 chapters a month (I have a big chunk of a draft written, so that's not as insurmountable as it sounds!), if RL doesn't throw any curve balls at me. But it's a long story, and I don't want to spend years posting it! haha!

Poor Severus, how must he have suffered trough the first part of the dinner before he learnt of the apprenticeship! ;o)
You make this Severus that results so logically out of DD come to life brilliantly. His fears, his insecurities, his feeling out of place... simply brilliant.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm very glad that you are enjoying and appreciating the characterization. It's something that, obviously, I worked on, and is the centerpiece of the fic, in a way.

Thanks again!

So he's back and decided to take Hermione's advice. Let's hope it was a good decision for him. What you wrote in the epiloge of DD makes me think of depression. It would be rather understandable, after Severus's history so far, to feel so lost and out of place in this life he never expected to be part of.

Author's Response: Yes, Severus is in a low place by the epilogue, once things set in and he's alone at Spinner's End. But the title of this fic, "A Long Vernal Season," should give you hope that he doesn't stay that way! ;-)

Thanks for reviewing!

Loved Death's Dominion and I just wanted to say that I'm very glad to see a continuation of sorts :)  I think your characterizations are very well written and complex, and this story, while seemingly mundane on the exterior, is very interesting and detailed in the interior mind of Severus, I'm very much enjoying it and look forward to future updates! Thank you :)

Severus at a fair..... hrm

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

A slightly incongruous image for you? For him, too! LOL!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

Oooh, I forgot about this last night.... no wonder I ran off to read Momentary Madness - to get this bizzare image out of my head so I could sleep peacefully... *winks*

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

LOL! Yes, Severus dressed in a black three-piece suit at a Muggle amusement park may be a bit too much just before bed!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

Now I see him sitting on a bench by a clown, holding a sprig of bright pink cotton candy and snarling... HEEEEE!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

LOL! That image just cracked me up!

Interesting justice laid upon the Malfoy family.... hehehehe

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, rather appropriate, if somewhat mild! But Narcissa seems to be doing quite well! :-)

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

Subtle justice is often the best... really could make someone think - and Narcissa surely does seem to be coping better than her hubby - she seems to appreciate a second chance.... while the git can't do anything but wallow in pity - and I am VERY impressed with Severus's handling of Lucius.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Severus has learned a lot over the last few years. Sometimes, he finds it difficult, himself, to take his own advice or see things clearly with respect to his own situation, but I think that's often the case. And Severus did manage to impress upon Malfoy that he wasn't where he was by some accident, but through dint of his own efforts.Glad you liked it!

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

I noticed - where Malfoy treats it like a chess game - oh I didn't choose white - that is why I feel bad - not I didn't choose to make good decisions, I was selfish, I wanted power and reached to a madman for it - Malfoy doesn't seem to have a clue that there is such a think as morals.... not something I can relate to, but I think you depict it well, or explain it well - as is the case - I'm quite imipressed you, being the kind and generous person you are, could depict such depravity on a personal level and do it with the Malfoy subtlety - that was quite clever.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thank you! I've observed a lot of human nature in my near *mumble mumble* years here on earth.

*snip*“The trouble is,” Severus said softly, “I don’t even know what to rant about. But I will remember your offer.”LOLOLOLNow tell me, why does this chapter seem so gray and sad? OH - we're seeing everything from Severus' POV - nevermind...

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

haha! Don't worry, things do get lighter! They really do! And Severus also learns how to have fun! *gasp!*

Response from Fishy (Reviewer)

Severus? FUN? *raises eyebrow*Now I know you've been drinking! *smirks*

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Only one lager, a few hours ago!
