Just an avid reader who somehow stumbled into HP fanfiction. I read and sometimes, I write.
Reviews for The Life Unlived
Damn. That's about the saddest thing I've read, but probably because it's more real than what is the 'norm' here. It's like "here, fast-forward, oops, you're at the end and you die." I'm really glad you have something up your sleeve, because it would be hard to go to sleep after reading this!

It was a very tough chapter to write. I'm glad you thought it felt real -- that was very important to me. Thanks so much!
I didnt think they wore lederhosen in Sweden, Hermione mused.
He grimaced and said, They dont.
Excellent.

That line makes me laugh every time. :) Thank yoU!
Just finished reading this story. It was briliant! So glad that there was a happy-end for Severus and Hermione.
Thank you very much for this wonderful story!

*grins* I could never actually kill him off ... At least I don't think I could. ;)Thank you!
Oh that was beautiful. Poor Severus.

Thank you so much!
A beautiful story, and that last chapter is a real tear-jerker!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the story. Hope you didn't have to use too many tissues ... okay, so secretly, the more tissues you use the more giddy I get, but we'll just pretend that I'm sorry. LOL ;)Thanks, again!
The TNG episode you based this story on is one of my favourites in the whole series. Your HP version of it was brilliant and I had tears in my eyes off and on throughout the whole thing. I'm so glad Severus was actually alive, though. They needed each other to complete things, and I love that even though Severus and Hermione were complete with Rose and Hugo as their only children the first time through, they had a child of their own to add to the family dynamic. I also liked how you worked the epilogue in to the story.
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
First let me apologize for taking so long to respond! RL has been insanely hectic, and I'm just now recovering. :)The Inner Light is my favorite TNG episode, too, and I'm thrilled that you enjoyed my HP version! Thank you so much!!
I probably have reread your story already 3 or 4 times since I saw it at the SS/HG exchange and it still moves me. I think Beth has already written down everything about the content of your story that I also like so I'm not going to repeat that. I'll just add some other, more philosophical observations about it. You know, the funny thing that struck me was that I thought 'the live unlived' might have been a key to the success of their actual relationship. It gives Hermione just a little bit more clues how to act when Severus is being difficult because of his own insecurity and this works just because it's only a vague familiar feeling for her and not as clear as a textbook instruction. I even think it's a blessing that Hermione lost the memory and not Severus, since I think it would be more difficult for her to start from scratch if she would have all those memories still fresh in mind. Severus however, with his experience of being a spy and a very private person will be much more able to separate the dream life and the development of their real life without trying to model everything in the way it was in the vision I think. By the way did someone ever tell you that you are not only writing intelligent fan fiction stories in a beautiful style with very natural sounding dialogues, but that you are also a very evocative writer? At several times when reading your story I thought it's such a shame we can't make a movie out of it. The whole picture you draw is so clear and the dialogues are so suiting for transferring to film that I felt almost sad that the characters are not yours. So just like chrystal quill I really hope you have plans to write your own stories as well, since you deserve it to tell your stories to a broader range of people outside our fandom too. Especially since you wrote in a comment that you have no personal experience with divorce and had written the first chapter with only the idea in mind what you would have felt. There is just one word for being able to use and transform a personal feeling into a convincing storyline; it's called talent.

First let me apologize for taking so long to respond. I had surgery a few weeks ago and was out of it for the two weeks before that. So I'm just now getting caught up!Your review completely overwhelmed me, so much so that I actually teared up when I read it. You hit on two things that I try very hard to convey: the characters emotions and the setting of the scene. That you are able to clearly see the scene is exactly what I was attempting, so I'm thrilled that felt the picture was so clear. Realistic dialogue is another thing that I strive for, even going so far to read it aloud to be sure it sounds like something the character would actually say. Your encouragement to write my own stories is so very appreciated. It is something I'm considering, and so knowing that people might be interested in my own works is so very heartening. I can't possibly thank you enough.Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

No thanks at all, you really really deserve it! And now it's my turn to apologize for this late respond but my health is not really cooperating with me either at the moment (I have a hernia and my ability to sit behind the computer is therefore a bit limited). You wrote somewhere as a comment that all these positive reviews you've got for The life unlived encouraged you to write again a more complex story with more drama and I am so glad you did! I am so wrapped up in your new fic Between the sand and stone that I created an account on OWL solely because you there have already more chapters of it. I will review that story over there though, just wanted to say that I am so glad you have stepped fully into your passion and let us enjoy the blossoming of your talent.
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Oh, no! I'm sorry to hear that you've not been well. :(I was so pleasantly suprised by the positive response to The Life Unlived. Up to that point, I'd written mostly fluff, and I was so afraid of crossing the line from dramatic to melodramatic. LOL Anyway, it definitely encouraged me to pick up another more dramtic fic... and thus we have Between the Sand and Stone. I'm trying to keep the chapters on the shorter side so that I can update more frequently. ;) I am so glad that you're enjoying the fic; I hope it will only get better as we go. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it. It's really just the beginning--there is so much more to come on that one.An idea for an original fic has been blooming, and it is due to reviews such as yours and others here on The Life Unlived that I am seriously considering giving it a go. So thank you again! :)
Whoa!?! I like this twist and like this story!! Never thought the Weasel & Hermione were a good match despite what She says. Ronniekins is a FOOL to treat Hermione like dirt and toss her for a blonde bimbette. Go, go go my OTP.
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying the story so far! :)
Oh, my... This is one of the best stories I've read... Your style is so compelling, my heart was beating so fast at the end of the chapter!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you so much! What a lovely compliment. :) Hope you enjoy the rest of the story!
For some strange reason, the similarity between this story and "The Inner Light" from Star Trek didn't hit me until I read this chapter -- but it was nice to find out at the end that this is what you'd had in mind (I love that episode)! I'm also reminded of a movie which I saw last Christmas called "Comfort And Joy" in which a career woman loses consciousness after a car accident and has a vision of what she thinks is the life she could have had with a husband and children -- only to find out in the end that it's the life she's going to have. Anyway, I think I can fill in one of the missing pieces of your story now. The reason why Severus decides to return to England is at least partly because Hermione triggered the sphere and gave him the dream which Eglantine had designed it to give to a witch -- isn't it? Maybe Luna even tells Hermione when Severus is coming to pick up his things so that she can be there when he comes. (I think that the name which you gave to Luna's mother is perfect, by the way...Eglantine, the wild rose. Lovely...)
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
You are a very perceptive reader -- and that's all I can say about that. LOL Your question will be answered in teh enxt chapter! :)And I'm glad you liked Eglantine's name. I wanted something that suited her, and that seemed to fit.Thank you so much! Chapter seven will be up in just a few hours!
Just brilliant! I can't wait for the next chapter!Livvy
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you so much! :) The next chapter will post as soon as I get the kids to school!
So, will she get to live the life that was in her memories.....stay tuned
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
That's the question, yes, though the answer is really in chapter six: the charmed vision wasn't the future. So what does that mean for our favorite couple? Answer in chapter seven! LOLThank you so much!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! How grand! Wonderful reveal and can not wait to see the next post! Thank you so much for your hard work!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
He's alive!!! :DThank you so much! The next chapter will post as soon as I get the kids to school.
What a chapter. I wonder whether Severus lived the 'Unlived' as well? Next chaper is going to be interesting.. I'm waiting impatiently lol...
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Ah, that's the question, isn't it? The answer is in chapter seven! Actually, all the answers are in chapter seven -- it's the last one! ;)Thank you so much!!
Oh god, I sobbed the whole way through this chapter, especially when she was sitting in Severus's cloak... amazing emotions, and it just broke my heart. But he's alive! Yaay! Simply on the edge of my seat for the next chapter...
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
He's alive! WOO HOO! :DI'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter. It was heartbreaking for me to write, especially after the mostly fluff of the previous two chapters. So glad you're enjoying the story! One more to go ...Thank you!!
Excelent story! Fascinating.Sigh, friday is a holiday over here. I hope my family gives my time to read!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Hopefully your family will give you some time to read -- chapter seven is the last one, sadly, and it's very long (almost 10,000 words). Thanks, again!
This story is extraordinary!!!! I got up early so that I could read the new chapter before going to the university and it was SO worth it. What a great chapter!! Everything fits and I'm sooo glad that he's alive!! I'm looking forward to the next chapter. You rock!!!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
*grins* Thank you so much, Gabi! I'm getting ready to take the kids to school, and then I'll post chapter seven. Hope you enjoy it!
awsome chapter. can't wait for the next. please hurry.
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
I'm getting ready to take my kids to school, and then I'll post as soon as I get back. :) No long waits on this one, thankfully! LOL Thank you so much!
Wonderful story - I was wondering when she'd figure out that he had to be alive! Now I wonder how Luna will convince him to return -- or if he'll manage it on his own.
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you so much! Ahhh, yes, that's a very good question, and we'll find out next chapter. It's the last one, but it's really, really long (just shy of 10,000 words). :)
Ha HA! Okay, so I was dead wrong about it being a vision of the future, but he IS ALIVE! So I was ... sort of ... almost ... kind of barely right in a very small way. Or something. But yay!!! I can't wait until the next chapter!!!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
*grins* You were sorta kinda maybe a little bit right. Sort of. If you look at it sideways. :)I'm getting ready to take the kids to school, and then I'll post chapter seven. Hope you enjoy!Thank you so much!
Brilliant! I'm loving this story more with each chapter. I was about to nitpick that Hermione was being bit dense in taking so long to get here but you stopped my with the reminder on her frame of mind. I'm just glad she finally knows what's going on. I can't wait to see what happens from here.Well done!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you -- and thanks for the reading the author note! LOL I'm glad you're enjoying the story!
Oh! This is exciting! Now counting the minutes until Friday!
Response from sshg316 (Author of The Life Unlived)
Thank you so much! I'm getting ready to take the kids to school, and I'll post as soon as I get back. Hope you enjoy!
