Sequel to Living Legacy. Abigail Snape has loved Teddy Lupin for as long as she can remember, but the timing has never been right. Now, it may be too late.

Just an avid reader who somehow stumbled into HP fanfiction. I read and sometimes, I write.
Reviews for Look Me in the Eyes
I find that I'm gradually becoming more flinty and less sentimental as I get older, so it's not often that a story is able to bring tears to my eyes...but this one did, probably because it hits a little too close to home (unrequited love seems to have been the story of my life). I think it was the perfect choice to have her father rather than her mother be the one to comfort her -- not just because he's a man "who will love her for always" and not just because it's comforting to see that Severus is able to share his softer side with his daughter (something which can't be said for all men who've seen the sort of things he has), but because he would understand exactly what she's going through whereas Hermione might not quite. I think it would be interesting to have a "missing chapter" in which Severus and Abigal have a little father-daughter chat -- after all, Severus probably never thought that he'd love anyone else after Lily and yet he did.

Thank you so much for your lovely review. Yes! You understood the significance of Severus being the one to comfort her. He knows what she's going through -- he lived it. What Abigail has on her side that he didn't is two loving parents. Severus had no one since Eileen was a basket case by then. Your thoughts are very insightful in some ways as to where this is going ... particularly at the end. Thanks again, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.
Let me get this straight. Teddy heard Abigail admit that she cried over him, and STILL wedding up next? Why ever would they (T+V) rush into a wedding so soon? Isn't a break-up in order first? So there could the right wedding up next?
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
Yes, he did, and yes, there will be a wedding. *is all mysterious* I didn't say whose wedding. ;) More to come soon! Thank you!
Aaww. This is so very lovely and heart-wrenching, I can't wait to see what Teddy will do with this new knowledge. And Severus in his father-role is gorgeous... Sel.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed seing Severus really fulfilling his role as a loving father. Teddy's reaction, and the fallout, will be in the next chapter. It should be up in a day or two. Thanks, again!
I am usually not especially interested in stories about "the next generation", but as somone who was head over heals in love with "Living legacy", there were never any question about me not reading this one:-) Poor Abigal, I hope you have some happiness waiting for her? If the wedding that comes up in the next chapter is Teddy and Victoire's, please find someone else for Abigal? I am kind of childish with regards to that aspect I know, if one of the characters "betrays" someone elses love with either marry or having sex with another character, I don't want said person to "have the cake and eat it too", meaning I don't want Teddy to first marry Victoire, and then have Abigal pining for him, and when the marriage for some reason ends, Abigal welcomes him with open arms. Nope, Abigal, as her mother before her, any woman for that matter, deserves to be first choise, not the seccond one. Victoire aint a bad figure, except "stealing" Abigal's love, and I don't want anything bad to happen to her, I think:-))).
Update again soon!

Thank you so much! What a lovely compliment that you're reading beyond what you normal read. *grins*Ah ... I would never leave Abigail alone. And I'm with you -- I prefer not to read my main characters with anyone else, so you rest assured that I wouldn't write it either. Never fear .. there will be no stealing of husbands in this fic. LOL More to come very soon! Thanks, again!
Wow, I knew I was right to want a spin-off... This was really soooooooo sweet, thank you very much. I can't wait for the update!gabPS: I've already reread "LL". (Just 3 days ago, as if I had known you would post this soon.) Enjoyed just as much as the first time round.

Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
Thank you! Teddy's reaction and the fallout from that are up next. I couldn't resist adding in Snape! LOL And given his history, he understands her feelings more than anyone. More to come soon! Thanks, again!
Thank you for obeying the Imperio ... not that I admit casting it, or anything ....
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
Suuurre. ;) You cast a very good Imperio, Kel. It's all but unbreakable. Thank you! *hugs*
I am SO glad that Teddy heard Abigail! What a great start to the story!

Thank you so much! The second chapter is complete, so it should post in a few days. :D
Well naturally, I had to read this one after finishing "Living Legacy". And of course, it's wonderful! You have a gift of enabling your readers to fully share in your characters' emotions. This is true of not only your lead characters, but also your prominent minor characters. You balance the angst with enough humor so the reader doesn't end up feeling pummeled with emotion. And you round it all nicely with just the right amount of valid and pertinent details of everyday life.I agree with others who've spoken of the hilarity of the bets and Severus' "nocturnal activities", though there was another short scene that had me cracking up. The image of Tonks apparating into her parents' bedroom at 2:00 am and knocking over a lamp was priceless. Also as others have mentioned, I was moved by the scene of Hermione and Severus walking into the funeral. But chapter 1 touched my heart the most (as well as a very sensitive nerve as I had a similar life experience). The scene where Severus is holding Abigail, and she cries "Oh, Daddy ... he's going to marry her" had me crying buckets right along with her.So, what more can I say except - Well done!

Thank you so much for the lovely review! I have been overwhelmed by the response to this story, considering it's about a original character and one that we barely meet in canon. So I'm so very glad that you enjoyed the story! Ah, you've picked out so many of my favorite parts, but I have to agree with you: the part that never fails to turn me into a puddle is the scene with Severus holding Abigail as she mourns the life with Teddy she thinks she will never have. *sniffles*Thank you, again!
What a wonderful final chapter! And the bit with all of them taking bets... Priceless. But you killed Minerva! *pouts a bit* (SS/HG's coming into the funeral, btw, was heartwrenching.) Oh, and one bit confused me. Maybe it's because it's late and I'm not quite up to par on my double entendres, but Severus and Hermione have two children and only one was conceived the old fashioned way and the other due to nocturnal activities... I am confused as to what "old fashioned" means due to Severus' fabulous exposition on nocturnal activities. Sorry. Minor detail. But when that man speaks, Lord, do I pay attention! :-)This was a very sweet and truly genuine love story, and it was very, very enjoyable. *hugs*
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
LOL I'm glad you enjoyed the betting -- that was a late night, last minute addition, and while I thought it was amusing, I wasn't sure if anyone else would. ;) About your confusion. It's a bit of a poke at Living Legacy, the original story this is based off of. Severus is actually making a very dry, very subtle (too subtle maybe?) joke at his own expense. When he says "the old fashioned way," he is referring to the spell he and Hermione used to conceive Ben. According to Living Legacy, the spell was used in olden days to ensure that a male heir was conceived. Thus, Ben was conceived "the old fashioned way" and Abigil was due to "nocturnal activities." Another one of those "funny to me but maybe not everyone else" moments. LOL I'm so glad you enjoyed the story, m'dear! Thank you, thank you! *HUGS*

That's a clever device... v. entertaining. :-)Really lovely story. I enjoyed it. *hugs back*
Oh, hon, the last chapter was anguish, and this was one was fabulous realization, and the conversations with the grandmothers was just LOVE.First off, Andromeda Black is fabulous. So is Eileen, and I love the use of family history and stories the readers know that help these two characters - so original - to look inward and realize their mistakes and, in a way, perhaps atone or rather break the cycle of the sins of the past... if that makes sense. Anyhow - fabulous chapter. And on to the conclusion!
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter. I worked very hard to get it right, and of course, I was never fully satisfied. LOL This was the pivotal moment, the turning-point for both of these characters, so it was very important. I'm so relieved you enjoyed it! Whew!Thank you!
Oh, see, I do remember reading this chapter... Severus is such a good father. Men are so obtuse sometimes. And now the story is done so the rest of the chapters are here for leisurely reading! Yay! Beautiful, but then, you knew that. :-)
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
*grins* Thanks, honey! I hope you enjoy the rest!
And now the shoe's on the other foot! Nice misdirection about whose wedding it was.I read the discussion on LJ about whether or not Teddy's actions could be considered as too much aggression or even borderline abusive, and I must say I don't think so. He needed her to hear his explanation and apology, and the fact that they were friends for so long and now have this huge misunderstanding (and enormous example of bad timing!) between them does, I think give him the right to try to be heard. She seems a feisty enough girl to be able to stand up for herself (she is the product of a pair of rather strong personalities, after all!). I doubt he could hold her there if she really didn't care to listen. So much of it all is about timing, isn't it? (Mine usually sucks, so I'm now identifying with poor Teddy!)
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
Thanks, W! Yep, the shoe is on the other foot this time! Yes, I viewed that scene as a best friend desperate to explain his actions and another best friend who was angry, hurt, confused, and yet still wanted to listen. Oh, yes. It's all about timing! In fact, the song that I've been listening to over and over as I write this story has that in a line ... "When the timing isn't right ..." Sigh. Poor Teddy. He had abysmal timing. The next part is with the betas now and will hopefully post tomorrow. And ... I got a bit wordy. There will be one more chapter after that! LOL ;)Thanks, again!
These days, I rarely read anything but SSHG, but he is here, after all (and Hermione's around somewhere, too), and to get to read some more of Shug's lovely writing, I will make the sacrifice.... And this is so very sweet and touching and moving. (And, unfortunately, I can identify with unrequited anything, dammit. The ones you love so very often don't love you back or in the way you wish they did. Bloody unfair!)
Response from sshg316 (Author of Look Me in the Eyes)
If you squint really hard, you can see Severus. LOL ;) Unrequited love ... it just sucks. LOLThank you so much, honey, for the lovely comments. I'm glad you enjoyed this first part.
This holds up wonderfully well on the re-read, shug. Pass the tissues for the happy tears :)
