After the war, all wizards and witches between the ages of twenty and eighty are made to take in an orphaned child. This includes one Professor Severus Snape, who doesn't seem particuarly happy...
Juliana, whose mother was killed in the war and who lived on her own for a year after her death, has never learnt many things, magic and trust are two of them.
Sometimes the most unlikely person can heal others... But are both Severus and Juliana up to the challenge?

Reviews for Learning to Trust
So happy to see the update! Very well written as usual and I look forward to let you tell us all Julianas secrets:-)
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Thank you. Just so you know, I'm not going to tell you Juliana's secrets... She'll have to show you herself.
Poor girl. Sev will have his hands full.
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
He will indeed.
Oh what a sweet chapter! Poor girl - I wonder what horrors she might have experienced in her young life... And I am sure that having someone to care for will do Severus good.I am glad I bookmarked this story.
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Thanks! Having someone to care for will do Sev good - canon does prtray his as all alone, we never really get an idea of his childhood.Ooh, bookmarks!
I love your story so far. I look forward to learning more of Juliana's past, as well as seeing where how her relationship with Severus goes.

This is going to be an interesting tale, I like it very much. To be honest, I was sceptical at first with the subject, as the opening showed some closeness to some bad Mary-Sue-stories I have read. But I'm really glad I read on, as this is definitely something quite different.
It will be interesting to see how Snape is going to deal with a child in his responsibility - even if the child is already 14 and seems to be quite agreeable...
Author's Response: If you don't mind my ignorance, what's a Mary-Sue? Never heard the term before.
I'm glad you like it, though!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: I'm afraid I can't explain it well in english, as it's not my mother language, but I suppose the explanation in the english language Wikipedia is as good as the german one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue
I'm just surprised that you don't know about it, as you are writing Fanfiction.... there is also something about the term in the submission rules.
she seems as secretive as he is, which is a good challenge for him. I'm wondering if her mother kept her magic secret out of fear of Death Eaters, and if her old clothes have sentimental value. here's hoping she learns quickly enough to catch up with the other kids! oh, and I'm guessing she is either Ravenclaw or Slytherin, but more Slytherin. thanks for the new chapter.

You're very welcome. As for your guesses as to the story, I can't comment too much on them. All will be revealed... Soon. Perhaps.
A very promising start. I am looking forward to the next chapters (and I have bookmarked it....)
Thank you so much for the update. I like this Severus, he is how I imagine he would be when freed of the preassure of being a spy, serving two masters who both demanded inhumane strength from him. "My" Severus will be very protective towards the ones he consider his responsibility. In fact, I think he will appriciate that he will have to work, and give it time, for Juliana to trust him. He likes a challenge, he ain't used to things comming easily, he knows how it feels not feel like you belong, and how not to have anyone you can fully trust. Not only does he need someone to care about, we all do, but I can also see him dedicate himself to give a lonly young girl (or boy, but this story have a girl) what he himself never had: An adult who you can trust to help you, comfort you and stand by you without any demands, but just because they care for you. Not that he won't have rules he expect to be followed, that is part of the help/comfort/support, but I think Juliana will learn that she can trust him and that is the most important thing for any child/young adult/adult.
Jup, I think I would like for this story to has its focus on the relationship between Severus and Juliana. To add a loveinterest for Severus will take much of the focus away from Julianas story. I do think though that adding a adult female (my favourite is Hermione, it always will be, maybe Luna on a seccond place:-), but not Narcissa, Ginny or Hooch, those pairings would be rather a turn-off for me) will help the two of them adjusting. You could later on make a sequel where you write the lovestory for Severus:-) He does deserve to have it all:-))Update again soon.

Thanks for the in-depth review. I agree with your view of Severus; he is slightly more free and relaxed than canon Severus during the war, but some scars can never be fully healed. He has been through more than most, which is why he and Juliana fir together quite well. There will be other characters addedd along the way, but not ever in the sidelines. This story is about Severus and Juliana. Now, must go finish next chapter. Adieu!
perhaps she will defeat the sorting hat and get to choose herself LOL, I like the way her character is developing.
I like what I've read so far, Juliana is an interesting character.I, for one, would like to see something without Hermione, especially in the romance department. In spite of the fact that Emma Watson manages to make the character quite appealing, rowling has written her as an annoying pain in the butt throughout most of the books. I like Emma Watson's Hermione, but i don't like the one that JKR created. In the same vein, but on a different note, I love Alan Rickman as Snape in the movies but I find the Snape I have in my head from the books and from my own imaginatio is a bit different from the movies. He's younger and his looks are more harsh, but he's every bit as enticing. I see the present day Snape as a combo of the personalities of Mr. Darcy, Mr Rochester, and Heathcliff, (with maybe a bit of well hidden Col. Brandon in his psyche) and in his early thirties when the books begin. In this story Id' say he's close to 40, which is still quite young for anyone and especially for a Wizard. My preference is to see him with adult OFC in his own age range, say 5 years either way, I also like him with other adult canon females like Sinistra, Tonks, Narcissa, or maybe Hooch. If he's with a former student, now an adult but still much younger, I like the irresistable force/immovable object attraction of opposites that happens with Snape and Luna. I'm also reading a Snape/Ginny story (Three Options for Ginny) that is an exceptional story.
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
I definately agree with your point on JKR's version of Hermione getting really, really annoying throughout the books. She's a great character and JKR just makes her to annoying, stuck up and just plain... wimpy. However, I still think that Hermione and Severus are promising in terms of a relationship. I think that of all the ships in canon and in fanfiction, it is one of the most likely personality-wise. But I also think that a lot of the time, it isn't approached the right way. Hermione may be making an entrance in this story, and may not, I haven't decided yet. Perhaps she will have a relationship with Snape, but even if she does, that isn't what this story is about. But thank you for the review.
Very intriguing, I really like this chapter, so please tell us more about her past!gab
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Thanks, I'm glad you think it is intriguing. Juliana has an... interesting past. More will be revealed later on in the story, though I can guarantee when yet.
I am very intrigued and I liked it! While I see that you state this will not be a SS/HG romance kind of story, and that is absolutely fine, I hope that Hermione at least will be "added" as a friend for Juliana. Severus will probably be the perfect person to help he channel her magic, teach her about magic etc, at 14 she wouldn't want to be cuddled and treated like a child, but still needs someone strong enough to trust. She is a young girl though, and there are things an "older" female friend would be better of talking to than grumpy "old" men:-) Besides, Hermione would probably bask in the challenge of making a study plan, like she has done so often for Ron and Harry, for Juliana to catch up with her peers. I think she and Severus will be good for eachother and I look forward to read more!
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Thanks! Your reasoning for adding Hermione makes sense... Do you mind if I steal the Hermione-makes-study-timetable idea? Of course Juliana and Severus will be good for eachother... They're both awesome, for one!Haha, Severus is really a grupmy "old" man, isn't he? I think Juliana, like me, can see past that, though.
Response from Sampdoria (Reviewer)
I would be honoured if you used the Hermione-makes-study-timetable idea! I would probably place you on top of the pile of "Brilliant fanfic authors you should always read and compliemen for their brilliant work" :-))
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Aww... You're on!
good start, has me waiting for the next! :)
I'm very intrigued and would really like to read more...Great start!gab
I like this chapter very much! Her Snapish-smile was amusing and promises good things for their future relationship. I wonder if her parents were Muggles or Muggleborns who home-schooled her. Here's hoping she makes friends at Hogwarts. Looking forward to the next chapter!PS - I hope the 'character death' warning was for her parents, not for Juliana or Severus, or for Hermione if she enters the picture.
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Yay! This is awesome, I'm getting so many positive reviews. The Snapish smile does have promise, but there are going to be many hurdles... As for your guesses... You'll just have to wait until the next chapter! (Will be up soon.)
This looks like the start of a promising story. Will Hermione be joining us? I'm a shipper. :) However, I'll probably continue with this story as it looks like it will have some good character growth. Well written.
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Thankyou. This probably won't end up being HGSS, it is focusing on Juliana and Snape's relationship. I might end up throwing in a relationship with Hermione, however it would only be as a side. (Talking in term of food, here!)
This seems to be an interesting idea behind a story. I'm interested in seeing how this progresses, keep up the good work!
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
The idea was actually once a challenge somewhere, though a HGSS one. So I can't claim the adoption act as my own.But still, thanks for the review!
I like your Snape, canonlike until now. It is a very intriguing start, looking forward to your updates. well written.
Response from ArtemisofEphesus (Author of Learning to Trust)
Thanks! I have a review... Yay.I don't think there's that much point in completely un-canonising Snape, he would be half as cool if he was nice all the time. Next chapter's already written, though I'm waiting to write the next one before I post it. Soon!
A very touching chapter, I'm looking forward to seeing her secrets revealed...gab
