Christmas Eve brings candles, guilt and memories for Severus Snape.
"He had been little more than a boy when his mother had died. At a loss for how to comfort the grieving child he barely knew, and seeking perhaps the familiar routines of his own childhood in solace, his father had taken him to church. Severus, however, had found no comfort in the austere, hallowed stone of the chapel, but he found something in the warm candlelight of the offerings to the souls of the departed. If it was not exactly comfort, at least it was more than emptiness. Religion had never permeated his soul, but the candlelight had."

Just how I image Severus would feel on Christmas. Thanks for your story.
this is a beautiful, and beautifully written, story. it is how i imagine he would feel, given the circumstances of his life. i loved how you used the imagery of the candles. you have painted such a vivid emotional and spiritual picture of this man haunted by his memories, with your carefully chosen words.
A wonderful look into a character who inspired so many emotions. I loved the very real, human feel this story has.
Oh the life one has to lead when one is a spy. The memories and sarrows one has to bare. They can be the death of you if you let it be. Brilliant.
Wow! You are an incredible writer. Your depictions and use of metaphor were quite evocative of the scenes' image and feeling. I really enjoyed this exploration into Severus' need to remember and acknowledge… all that he can do. Beautiful story.

I wanted to let you know here just how amazing I thought this was. I completely get Snape's feelings on church and candles. They're so spiritual and touching. Some of your images in here were amazing—such as here: Trickles of wax had run in rivulets, a testament to long use, pooling on the dark mahogany, as if the candles shed the tears that he could not. Each one was an offering of sorts, an apology or consecration perhaps, in his mind at least—and I was really gripped by this! A great little one-shot. :-)
