Chapter 4
Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?
Chapter 5 of 5
phoenixHarry and Hermione never meant for it to happen. They each thought they were destined for someone else, but after a night on the run from the Death Eaters, they learned they belonged together.
ReviewedChapter 4
"Come on, Hermione. Push," Harry urged.
She was nearly in tears. "I can't push anymore. I'm too tired."
"You have to push, dear. It's nearly over," prompted Pomfrey.
"That's what you said an hour ago. Can't you spell the baby out?" She just wanted this to be over. They wouldn't tell her how long she had been in labor, but she thought it had to be close to a full day.
"I can see the baby's head. Just a few more pushes."
"You can?"
"Push, Hermione!" Harry urged.
She tried pushing, but was just too tried. "I can't. I can't do it." For the first time in her life, she was going to fail, and she found she couldn't hold back the tears anymore.
Harry leaned down and brushed her cheek. "Yes, you can. You've never given up on anything before. This is the most important thing you've ever done. You aren't going to give up now, are you?"
Fighting back the tears, she replied, "No."
"That's my girl," said Harry as she pushed with the contraction. "Come on. Nearly there. Just a little bit longer."
The pressure was unbearable. She fell back against the bed, needing to rest. "He's too big. I can't do it."
"No, he's not. One more big push, and I'll have the baby's head. Come on, Hermione. Once more. The head's the hard part," urged Pomfrey.
"I can't," she cried.
Pomfrey rubbed her leg. "You have to; for the baby. He's ready to be born. He has to come out now. He can't wait any longer, or he might be in danger."
This was all the motivation she needed. She didn't want to hurt her baby. After taking a few deep breaths, she felt another contraction. Grabbing her legs, she bore down and pushed. Grunting, she could feel the baby moving. She was going to do it. Any second now her child would emerge into the world.
"Good, good. Okay. I've got the head. One more big push," Pomfrey said.
Harry had a huge grin on his face. "Nearly there," he said proudly.
As Pomfrey pulled the baby free, Hermione felt relief. She had done it. Her grin matched Harry's. Finally, she heard the sound she had been waiting for: her baby's wailing. "Oh, Harry." She now found that she couldn't control her tears anymore.
He leaned down and kissed her. "How's the baby?" he asked.
"Perfect." Pomfrey set the swaddled child in Hermione's arms. "He's a perfect baby boy."
"I told you it was a son," Harry said.
"He was so much trouble that I figured you were right." Pulling back the blanket, she saw strands of black hair that already promised to be unruly. "And it looks like he takes after you."
Harry sat on the edge of the bed and wrapped his arms around Hermione. "I'm proud of you." After kissing her on the top of her head, he added, "I love you."
"I love you, too, Harry."
After a few moments, he pulled away. "Ron's going to wonder where I am. I guess I should go tell him. Can you live without me a little while?"
"Hurry back?" She wasn't sure that she was up to dealing with the baby by herself.
"As soon as I can. After all, our son needs a name." He gave her one last kiss before leaving.
Harry was still in a daze when he entered the common room. He was a father, and his son was magnificent.
"Hey, where've you been? It's been hours," asked Ron. "I went by the hospital wing, but no one was there."
Harry grabbed his arm, realizing that he had never had it looked at. "Er..." He couldn't think of what to say.
"I guess you couldn't find Madam Pomfrey, either, huh?"
"Er, is Ginny around?" He realized this was a stupid question since the common room was deserted except for the two of them.
"She went up to bed. You know, it's really late."
"Yeah, I know." He paced a few moments. He needed to speak to both of them together, but he knew that he could not go up to the girls' dormitory. "Dobby."
"What?" Ron asked, utterly confused.
"Dobby!" Harry called.
There was a pop and the elf asked, "Harry Potter has called Dobby?"
"Can you go up to the girls' dorm and get Ginny?"
"Yes, sir. Dobby can do that," the elf said cheerfully and disappeared.
A few moments later, Ginny was yawning and stretching as she came downstairs. "Wha's goin' on?"
"Thanks for coming down," Harry said. "I have something very important to tell the two of you. Something that's going to be very hard to hear."
"What is it?" asked Ginny cautiously as she flopped into the chair.
He took a deep breath, trying to decide how best to continue. "I know where Hermione is. She's in a private room."
"Can we go see her?" asked Ginny.
"In a little while. If you still want to."
"Why wouldn't we want to? I mean, she's been moody to me, but she's still my friend," said Ron.
Harry frowned. They had no idea what he was about to say. "The two of us have been keeping something from you, something pretty big." He looked into their eyes and could tell they were waiting for him to elaborate. A part of him wanted to get up and pace, but he knew that would just be a stalling tactic. "Last summer, we did something stupid."
"And? You do stupid things all the time," Ron said.
He ran his fingers through his hair. "Not like this." He decided the time for stalling was over. "I got her pregnant."
They started at him in silence for a few seconds until Ron started laughing. "Oh, that's rich. That's a real funny joke. What did you really do?"
This was not the response he had expected. He thought Ginny looked as though she desperately wanted to believe that it was a joke, too. "Seriously. I got Hermione pregnant. She just gave birth to our son."
Ron said sarcastically, "I would think we would have noticed if she was pregnant. I mean, we spend a lot of time around her, and that's not something you can hide."
"Yes, it is. She's been using a Veiling Charm since Christmas. I tried to get her to go into hiding, but she refused. Earlier this week, it finally became too much for her, and Madam Pomfrey has kept her in a private room where she could be monitored. We only told you that she was suffering from Dragon Pox to keep you away."
Ron wasn't laughing anymore. Ginny looked at Harry in horrified shock before running upstairs, breaking out into tears.
Ron clenched his jaw in anger. "You bastard. You really did it? You know how I feel about her."
"Ron, I know. I don't know how it happened. We were running from Death Eaters, hiding in a cave and then... Well, you know."
"I ought to punch you," Ron growled.
"Ron," Harry started.
"Don't 'Ron' me. You've been playing at being my best friend, using me. I can't believe neither one of you had the guts to tell me. And what about Ginny? I should definitely punch you for what you've done to her."
This was more the reaction he had expected. A part of him wanted Ron to just punch him and get it out of his system. "I didn't do anything to her. I told her last year that it wasn't the right time for me to have a relationship. I told her not to wait for me."
"Oh, yeah. My sister's not good enough for you. But within weeks of telling her you don't want a relationship, you go fuck my girlfriend. Real manly. And I guess that's why you didn't see fit to tell me, huh?"
"We didn't tell anyone. If anyone knew that she was having my baby, she would have been a target. I don't know if she would have been safe even here. We couldn't risk that news getting out."
"Because Ron has a big mouth and can't keep a secret. Can't trust Ron with anything important," he said in a sing-song voice. "Thanks a lot, mate." Ron got up, gave Harry a dirty look, and headed for the dormitory.
"Hermione does want to see the two of you. If you change your mind, ask Madam Pomfrey and she'll show you where she is," he called to Ron's retreating back. He had known that this would go poorly and he was impressed that Ron had not hit him. If he were in Ron's place, he would have punched himself. Hopefully they would visit Hermione once they got over the shock.
*************
Hermione looked up when the door opened. She saw the sullen expression on Harry's face. "It didn't go well, did it?"
He sat next to her on the bed, which had returned to its original size. "No. Ginny ran upstairs crying without saying anything. Ron yelled at me a bit before leaving. I told them that you do want to see them, but I don't know if or when they'll come."
She sighed. "I suppose that was to be expected, wasn't it? I'll write them letters later." She was silent a few minutes as she pondered her next question. She had been thinking about it for some time. He had mentioned fixing up his parents' house when this was over, but they had never formally discussed anything. "When are we going to get married?" she asked softly.
This question caught him completely off guard, and he opened and closed his mouth several times before speaking. "I guess it should be sooner rather than later, shouldn't it? I, er, hadn't thought that much about it, I guess. I'm sorry," he replied nervously.
She gently touched his arm. "No, that's all right. I know that defeating Voldemort is important, and that you are very close to destroying all the Horcruxes. I thought that perhaps we could have a small civil ceremony, elope, I guess you'd call it. That way if anything..." Biting her lip in an attempt to stop the tears, she tried to think of anything else. But there had been so many casualties in the war, and Harry had taken on a more dangerous job than anyone else, that it was hard for her not to fear that something might happen to him.
He held her more tightly, trying to comfort her. "That sounds like an excellent idea. I'll talk to Professor McGonagall about it. How's he doing?" he asked to change the subject.
She shifted him against her breast. "I'm trying to get him to eat, but he's being fussy. I think he takes after you." She smiled as she looked up at him. "He needs a name, you know."
He reached over and brushed his son's wisps of hair. "How about James Patrick after our fathers?"
"That's exactly what I was thinking." She leaned against him as he held her in a comforting embrace.
"Welcome to the world, James Patrick Potter. May you have a life of peace."
~The End~
A/N: Thank you very much for reading this story. I hope that you have enjoyed my take on a possible Harry/Hermione relationship. My undying gratitude goes to JenKM1216 for making sure I got the mommy's perspective on this story. Also, thanks to nota for being such a loyal beta reader and putting up with my diverse writings.

This was definitely a different approach. Nicely written, believable prose.
Is there going to be another chapter? I really love this story. :D
Very nice story, but how can you just leave it here?Like all good stories you want it to continue, find out if Ron and Ginny ever come around. Is six years of friendship and the bonds that they have formed - seven for H/R/H are strong enough - or does this end the H/R/H/G friendship?I would really like to know....

Thanks, bea. I like to leave some stuff up to the reader's imagination. :D This was one of them. I'm sure some folks will believe it has totally destroyed the friendships and others want them to overcome this adversity. Right now I have no plans to continue this, but as I get through the many other projects, that may change. :D
ARRGGHH! I love your story! I wish it had been longer. I am glad that it was completed too as I would have probably cried if I had to wait to find out what happened next.
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Glad you enjoyed it. As for the length, I always planned on it being short and a bit ambiguous at the end. I like to have little interlude stories while I write some of my longer chaptered work. This one fit the bill well. :) Plus, I really didn't want to write another final battle scene. Perhaps in the future there will be a post war followup to this, but nothing more than that, I expect.
I've been meaning forever to read some more of your stories, but I must confess, I've pretty much spent the last couple of months in some strange sort of infatuation state towards my own first writing project here, so I never really got round to it. Come to think of it, this might actually be the first chaptered story I've read since I began this whole writing thing (and that was sometime in April..) LOL
But I really enjoyed reading this; I love it that you're an author of 'diverse writings' (even though I'm a shameless canon-shipper at heart :P) And you're title was very clever and fitting, too ^^
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks. Glad you found time to read it. I will admit that I am very delinquent on reading stuff that I am not beta reading. That has been one advantage of being an admin, I'm getting more reading done. :DYes, I am very diverse. LOL Heck, I have Hermione/Viktor in hot standby right now. I loved the title and shamelessly stole it from movie. LOL Any time I can find inspiration for a title I'm ecstatic. I have sat on stories for weeks for lack of a title.I hope that you find time to read more, though I have very few that are canon pairing, though I do have some that feature OFC, so it's not anti-canon, per se.
Response from Ninquelote (Reviewer)
Oooh, a Hermione/Victor one? You sure are full of unexpected ideas. ^^ I'll be sure to finish your MPREG one soon, too. (So far, it's been hilarious XD)
No worries about the non-canon pairings there. Just because I happen to agree with JK's ships, doesn't mean I can't enjoy the many brilliant stories that completely contradict canon.
And I enjoyed your vids, too (even if this might not be the right review board to tell you this :P) Even watched one of your Farscape ones, though I still have no idea what that is. LOL Just couldn't resist good old Grieg ^^
Im not really a big fan of harry/hermi but I have to admit that I really liked this story. I just wished there was more to it. Say like how ron and ginny delt with the news and seeing the baby grow and maybe had to go in hiding or something. Anything that shows what happend after james patrick was born. Hope you take it into consideration.

. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Perhaps at some point in the future, i'll revisit this one. Right now I have so many other projects on my plate, that this is falling pretty low on the list of things to do. It would be interesting to find out how this all turns out in the end. :)
Awww... James Patrick *wipes away happy tear* God! So emotional!! Crying at everything, happy or sad... that's scary! Anyway, well done on the story, glad to see a happy ending!
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed this. I tried to keep it away from the darkness of the war to keep it as light as possible. Of course, this means that JKR is going to come out and finally tell us what Hermione's parents' names are.
I generally prefer my stories with happy endings, so that's what I try to go for, though, I don't always succeed.
Response from Mrs_D_Radcliffe (Reviewer)
Well you did succeed, and I'm so glad. I still think James Patrick is like the cutest name EVER!! (For Hermione and Harry's baby that is.) So sweet!! hehehe. Thanks for responing! :D
I feel a bit sorry for Ron / Ginny. So, was Ron thinking that he was still Hermione's boyfriend? I'd thought since they'd been fighting alot, they'd never made that set in stone for certain. She should have called things off if that was the case.I'm happy that they are in love though and are going to be parents with their little one. Great work. I much prefer Harry for her than Ron.
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
That was the one downside of this story. Normally, you could try to pair up the jilted lovers, but that's not cool when they are related. LOL Ron, being Ron, was in denial that there really was nothing there. He was still crushing on Hermione, but they had definitely cooled.
I definitely prefer her with Harry to Ron, which is why Harry go the role of father. Though, it wouldn't have been near as much fun for me if it had been the other way around.
Long labors = terrible... but worth it in the end! Good work
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Poor Hermione definitely wasn't having a good time of it. But I do think she will find it worth it in the end. :D
Hahaha! McGonagall: a true Dumbledore replacement! I'm glad she spotted it! Moving along.
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Yup, I really loved using McGonagall in that role. And I figured that things would be hectic enough that she would still have to teach classes. I mean, they're kids, they can't outsmart the adults forever, can they? LOL
Oh, I'm so glad she told him. Poor thing. She was likely afraid and miserable facing that alone. yay!
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
It was good for her to get that out. A part of me wishes that I had covered her inner turmoil some more, but then, it would have ruined the surprise of her dropping that bombshell on Harry, and I love leaving surprises, so that version won. :D
Oh, slipsies.... Been there and done that. Great prologue. Now, I'm moving forward to the next. :)
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Glad you liked it. I little bit of a rushed tease, but they are inexperienced teenagers, so... that sort of thing does happen. ;)
I like that you didn't tie up all the loose ends in this. It felt a bit rushed, to be honest, but it was enjoyable. Thanks for sharing!! Peace! ~ j
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks, j. Glad that you enjoyed it despite the rushing. I wanted to include some of the trials of hiding the pregnancy and the accompanying misery without getting overly bogged down. This is also a predominantly Hermione story, which did make the storytelling a bit easier on my part. All in all, it was a fun little diversion for me to write. :)
Aww !!! Too lovely, and just enough angst to make it believable. I'm not a Harry/Hermione shipper, but this one was very plausible. Well done.
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thank you very much. I'm glad to see that someone not a H/Hr shipper enjoyed this story. I don't like to put large amounts of angst in a fic, just as I don't like to read high angst fics. Now I can return to my usual pairings. LOL
Response from HogwartsHoney (Reviewer)
Who do you usually pair?
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
I generally focus on LM/HG and SS/OFC. I have done some Lupin stuff, including a SS/RL. I do have a SS/HG challenge fic that I will at some point write a few more chapters on, when time permits.
*angelic look* pleeeeeeeeease submit the next chapter soon. I'm really enjoying it *grin*
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
I'm glad you are enjoying it. I need to give the last chapter a final run-through and then it should be up on the board. :D it was a fun one for me to write.
Normally I dont read this pairing but I love this story please keep updating!
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks,
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
. I don't normally do this pairing either. I'm glad that you are enjoying it inspite of the pairing. The final chapter should be up over the weekend. Then I can concentrate fully on other stuff. To many plot bunnies.
“I got the Horcrux,” he said softly, hoping to distract her from the agony she was in.“That’s good,” she panted. That part was so typical, and absolutely hysterical!!! You must have children, to have captured that scene so well! ...still laughing... ~ j
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks for your wonderful praise. I suppose you will be shocked to learn that I don't yet have children. LOL I did an incredible amount of research and picked the brains of a few mommies to get some good feedback on that part, well, the whole story really, to make it realistic. Most especially, JenKM1216, who gave me the basic premise for the story. She's wonderful. And I'm really glad that you have found this entertaining and humorous. I like to think this story is a good mix of darkness and humor. :D
wow...i was twisting in my seat...i am amazed no one has found out....and just how daft is the weasel anyway...lol...now macgonagol know....this is getting interesting...cannot wait for the next update....
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks. I'm glad that you were twisting. Weasley, well, he's pretty thick and if Hermione is trying to drive him away, he's likely to leave her alone. I guess it's good that she doesn't have a lot of friends. Ah, yes, McGonagall does know and well, the next chapter's up now.
For a moment I though she was going into labour there with McGonagall. An evil cliffie ... is she going to help them, or not?I guess I will just have to wait until your next installment.
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
I love my evil little cliffies. And you'll see what happens in the next installment. I should have that up in a few days.
I'm the same as you - not really a H/Hr shipper, but for some reason, I still would rather read it than R/Hr. Much rather. This story is shaping up well - I'm glad that you put in there how much Ron and Ginny would be hurt by Harry and Hermione getting together. Will you let us [Potter Place] know when you update?
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks for the review and taking the time to read something that is not your preferred ship. I'm glad you liked the thoughts about the consequences of their actions. I think that helps it in the realism department.
I will most definitely be posting to Potter Place when I post more chapters. I try to do it in a timely manner, but sometimes I forget about it, except when I'm a work, where I can't access anything Yahoo related. I am working through the next chapter, making sure I'm happy with it, and it should be up in a few days.
What a mess ... Poor Ron and poor Ginny. I'm curious as to how you will let them overcome the problems arising.
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks, apisa. It is a mess, isn't it? There will be more showing how they deal with their problems. And yes, poor Ron and Ginny. At a time when you need your friends, you find you can't turn to them.
I love how it is going so far! You are doing an excellent job. Sorry I didn't get to it sooner, but you know how things have been going for me. I can't wait to see the coming chapters. And in reference to the other review, isn't this set after HBP? I assumed it was... Anyway, great job! :)
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks, Jenny. I've had great fun with this one and no worries about RL coming up and taking time. It's more important. And yes, it's set after HBP. I supposed I should have stated that. LOL I'm doing some final revisions on this one so I can get it posted.
Great so far! Surprised Dumbledore hasn't noticed anything yet though...
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks,
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
. As for Dumbledore, this is set after HBP, so he's no longer around. Though, I'm not sure he would have noticed, though he does notice a lot, doesn't he? Look for new chapters soon. :)
Gotta love the short & sweet!! LOL!!Nice job. Peace! ~ j
Response from phoenix (Author of Everything's Going to Change Now, Isn't It?)
Thanks, there will be more to this though. :) I think it's at 5 chapters. I hope you enjoy the rest of it
They are so very young, to be in such a pickle, I feel very sorry for Ginny, Ron not so much.
