On the day of his return to Hogwarts as headmaster, Severus Snape settles some old scores and makes some offerings. Chapter One offers Professor Sprout's pov. Possible dub con.

Heartbreaking, beautifully writen, still heartbreaking.

Thank you; I really appreciate your taking the time to comment. Glad you found the story effective.
Severus is so alone, and lonely it is a big sacrifice foe him to give up Minerva, his only comfort. Somehow I don't think Minerva will give up on him, he doesn't understand the depth of a woman's heart, what man truely does.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I tend to agree with you: Minerva won't give up. She sees the truth about his DH year. Thanks so much for reading!
Well no one has ever mistaken Severus for a " fluffy bunny " , Albus will hate being kept in the dark. I am so glad I found this story again, I lost track of it and couldn't remember the name, now I can finish it at last.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I'm glad you found it, too! I've always had a soft spot for it. Thanks for reading.
Interesting, I have often wondered about the staff's reaction to Severus' return, after Bumbledor's death.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I've wondered, too -- I wish JKR would write a second version of DH -- "What was happening at Hogwarts." Thanks for reading and commenting.~~Kelly
love minevera thought.. shock they had a past realtionship. overall a great job!
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate the comment.
severus is bacK! An interesting story..
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thanks for reading!
Even knowing that this story would not have a happy ending, I had to follow you to its end. It really does bring me back to the end of Deathly Hallows and how I felt at what I've always thought of as "not what I would have wanted, but the only way it could end."You story is very compelling, and I'm grateful that you showed us a part of the HP story that could have been part of canon and that meant that Severus and Minerva had at least had a few happy times together. Bitter though it is, it is a wonderful story and I thank you for posting it.Hugs, Beth
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thank you, Beth -- for sticking with it and for those heartening words. I love to try to make fanfic fit into canon, and I'm happy you think it works here.~~Kelly
This was so damned good -- a sexy, tough-minded, haunting tone poem. The erotic tension between Snape and Minerva balances perfectly with their genuine appreciation of each other's personalities. Snape's doomed term as Headmaster is full of unspoken stories, and yours is compact and compelling.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thank you so much! Painful though it is, I love writing about the DH year at Hogwarts. As you say, there are so many stories we just didn't get in canon. Thanks for reading and commenting.~~Kelly
*sob*This is such a bitter ending. And just so right. I can really imagine this as being part of canon.Wonderfully done!
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Yeah, I just don't see the DH year as being anything but miserable for all of them. Thank you for reading and for your kind words.~~Kelly
In spite of their history, it does seem like the fates have decreed that Severus and Minerva shall only ever have a few good memories of them together, and that even those memories will forever be tinged with bittersweet what-might-have-beens.I'm really hurting for both of them. Is there no way for Severus to be missed? Even at the end can Minerva not retain at least a fond remembrance of the strange companionship they shared?Well written, Kelly!Beth
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I've actually written a story where Severus and Minerva are (mostly) happy; I'll post it next, maybe. I know taht canon doesn't really give us much hope for SS, but hey, that's what fanfic is for! Thanks for commenting.~~Kelly
Great story so far..I think Severus is either in denial or protecting himself form his true feelings for Minerva.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I think you're right -- he *is* in denial. So many of Severus's feelings are painful or difficult that I think he just blocks them all out, even the potentially good ones. Thanks for reading and commenting.~~Kelly
Response from pansycat (Reviewer)
Here is proof of how good this story is : I ship Severuß with Hermione for the most part (sometimes Remus) but I really am enjoying this pairing. Can't wait for more :-)
Oh wow. I thought the last chapter was intense. And perhaps, in some way it was more intense than this one. But this one is so ... naked? I feel as if Snape is baring himself totally. This is so very true to character. He doesn't moan or whine. He has just accepted that because fate is a bitch, he has to sacrifice himself to make the life of everyone else (at least Minerva) better. (Realle rather Hufflepull of him, when I think about it...)But how I wish that someone (Minerva, for example...) would kick him for these thoughts. Her does deserve to be lamented, and I think having Minerva lament him for what might have been is so much better, than having him hate her, and regret that which was. (Sorry if that sentence was a bit strange...)Again I'm eager for more. :)
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Glad you liked it! i agree, someone really needs to set Severus straight -- he's too used to thinking of himself as a doomed martyr. We'll see what Minerva thinks in the next chapter.~~Kelly
I am amazed at how much convey in so few words. The feel of this snippet is intense, and somewhat frightning. Your Snape is no Fluffy!Snape.Once more I find myself wishing for more. And I do hope to read something from McGonagalls POV. Is she as unknowing as Snape hopes her to be? Or does she know him better? I suspect the latter. Snape may have learned manipulation from two masters, but McGonagall is no fool.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thanks! I think the whole DH year must have been exhausting and intense for everyone at Hogwarts; I'm glad you think something of that feeling comes across here. And I agree...McG is no fool. We'll get her POV later.~~Kelly
Yes, Severus thought with savage pleasure, Dumbledore would spend his half-lit eternity never understanding the legacy that Snape was leaving to Minerva McGonagall. And if all went according to plan, neither would she.OMG! What are you up to? I don't have a clue why Severus did what he did to Minerva, or what the legacy is that he plans to leave for her, but I'm certain there is "a method to your madness."Update, please?Beth
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Update tonight! Thanks for sticking with this, Beth; hope you'll find the rest interesting.~~Kelly
What a menacing character Severus is on his return as Headmaster! I saw in your response to moira's review that this wasn't a particularly happy story, so I'll just have to prepare myself for a broken heart... but I have to see where you're going with this.Beth
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thanks for reading! I think the DH year would have been so difficult for all of them that happiness would be pretty scarce. But of course with Severus, things are always more complicated than they seem....~~Kelly
Color me giddy with delight - I've not read this one anywhere else - what a treat !!
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I hope you'll enjoy it! It's not a happy story, but I hope it's an IC one.~~Kelly
Ugh! I expected you to go all canon on me, but I was still holding out hope. No matter, the ending was well done and it went as it should have ... sigh.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Yeah, given the DH year, I just couldn't see an even semi-happy ending here. Thanks for sticking with it and for your kind words.~~Kelly
Somehow, I don't think that Severus was successful in turning Minerva against him. He always seemed so alone in canon, so I love it when he has someone in fanfic. Not that their relationship is what either would like, but still, it's something. it makes you hate Voldemort all the more to know that he was the cause that ended the affair. Perhaps things will end okay for them, whatever okay means these days.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
One of the elements that most intrigues me about a potential Severus/Minerva relationshiip is how complicated and a-typical it would be. I try to make those dimensions come across in the stories. They are such complex characters to me.~~Kelly
I suspect that nothing would make Dumbledore more angry or annoyed than getting a taste of his own medicine, especially in the form of being kept in the dark about something going on right under his nose. The end of this chapter has me wanting to know exactly what is transpiring between the Headmaster and his deputy. I suppose I should shut up and keep reading.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I really enjoyed writing this Dumbledore-Snape face-off scene; glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting!~~Kelly
Oh, this is so good right from the start. Everyone is well within character, and they have me terribly intrigued. Is Pomona correct her her assumptions that there is something going on between the other two? I'm not gonna lie to you ... I hope she is. ;) Off to find out ...
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
By now you know whether Pomona was right -- hope you were pleased! /g/~~Kelly
This period in between canon is so extremely interesting, and it must have been so difficult for the staff to accept Snape as the new Headmaster. I'm looking forward to see where you go from here. And may I also commend your McGonagall for figuring out Snape's role in Dumbledore's death. I think it unlikely that she looses all her faith in Snape. And Poppy's running commentary (or POV) is good. I like how it sets things in perspective. And I am very ... interested ... in what the surely-not-sexual innuendo was all about ;)
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
I've always found it very unlikely that in canon none of the staff, particularly McG, would have figured out the truth about Snape -- if not the whole truth, then at least figured out that there was more to the story than met the eye. So I have fun playing with that idea. I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the story; thanks for reading!~~Kelly
An original between-the-canon point to begin your story. Snape's arrival as headmaster must indeed have been a shock to the rest of the staff. I will be interested to see where it goes from here.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Thanks for reading! I'm sure Snape's return would have been tense and difficult for all of them, himself included.~~Kelly
Pity he never realised how well she understood him.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
That's true! A little communication can go a long way.
A lonely position for him to be in.
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
It *is* lonely. That last year must have been so difficult for Severus.
Hmm, what is he up to? :)
Response from kellychambliss (Author of Gifts)
Good question! /g/ Severus has always kept things so close to his chesst. . .
