Wonerful story.  Somehow missed this one before.  Well done.

A lovely look at life after War, nice to see Lucius replacing peacocks, with chickens, and Narcissa as a cheese maker is inspired. The thought of a enclave of both magical, and muggle, and squib, beyond the reach of both governments is wonderful.

Thank you for sharing this delightful tale with us! I loved Lucious and Narcissa's early explorations of Muggle farmlife. Crook sounds like a wonderful village to live in!!!

Hi there...fantastic story and delightful to see the Malfoys in a more human light. I suppose it would be incredibly traumatic to lose one's magic...God knows how it affects me when t'internet is down. At first I thought you meant Crook near Kendal which I know well but I think you are referring to the one near Durham. Chicken rearing??? Our friends had chickens near Barrow and it was always lovely to have fresh eggs. I live in a rural village midway between Rawtenstall and Burnley and after a lifetime of living just outside Manchester this country life is idyllic. We have sheep,cows,owls,rabbits...millions of them, badgers, horses, foxes in summer and yes even alpacas in the fields surrounding us. And as I'm sure you'll agree it is magical. Thanks for a great quite redemptive story. Best wishes, Love Ali xxxx. PS My daughter used to serve Lucius himself coffee when he was filming up around Edinburgh a couple of years ago....delightful man.Everyone morning more or less for six weeks or so...sigh!

Thank you! I'm so glad you like my little tale!Yes, I referred to the Crook near Durham, and more out of my liking for the particular name than anything else. *grins*I've not heard owls here nor seen foxes, but everything else you mention, yes, plus deer that look absolutely magical when they cross the paths during twilight.Wow, your daughter is one lucky girl!

A thoroughly delightful story with plenty of food for thought.  As I read, I couldn't help recalling some of the pics you've posted, and I could see the cows and chickens (and the CHEESE!) in my mind's eye.  Ishka the pony would be very much at home there.  Thank you for a lovely read, and a roadmap to a better way.Beth

Thank you, dear Beth.Yes, lol, I think I inserted lots of my own wishes into this little tale! And I'm absolutely tickled that so many readers see it, as you so aptly put it, as a roadmap to a better way.

When I was younger, someone once told me "Big companies need good people more than good people need big companies."  I think at the time, I did not fully appreciate all of the implications of that statement.  In this story you have shown that "Big countries need good people more than good people need big countries."  Those in the conforming majority don't understand why anyone would prefer to be elsewhere. Thanks for creating such an appealing elsewhere full of community, challenge, and simple acceptance.  It was a magnet to those who had seen so many die in a war that changed nothing and a puzzlement to those whose hands never got all that dirty.I am with you on the alpacas, though if I could, my choice would be vicuna.  So cute and so soft and so not allowed to leave South America.

I have a neighbor who raises chickens. She used to have a couple of silkies, but alas, the eagles got them. Too bad. They were soft and beautiful, and so sweet tempered. She has horses also, and she says if she had to choose between them, she would choose the chickens! On the other side are cows. One cow likes to come lick my hand when I am nearby. Her long tongue feels like sand-paper. Much rougher than a cat's tongue! I think she likes the salt on the surface of my skin.I can understand why Lucius and Narcissa would eventually warm up to this country life. After living in the city, I much prefer it also.

Response from karelia (Author of Danse Macabre, or: Learning to Light a Fire)

Chickens need less space, lol. :PThank you for your review! Yes, there is definitely something about living in the country that no lure to the city can beat.

Great twists here.  Such a struggle to get down the basics, and then to find that they actually like some aspects of Mugglehood they would have never thought possible.  I love that they created a new place for Wizards to locate, and the Ministry couldn't say anything.

Response from karelia (Author of Danse Macabre, or: Learning to Light a Fire)

Thank you, Deb! I'm happy for them that they discovered a way of life that is not only acceptable to them but includes friendships as well. :)

Lemonade out of lemons, indeed. Shows what happens when enough people get fed up with an unfair and outdated system, yes? How funny that the Malfoys ended up leading the way to a better, brighter and freer alternative to the old Ministry-led magical Britain. Well done, Karelia... I think this rates as one my most favorites of your body of work. Kudos!

Response from karelia (Author of Danse Macabre, or: Learning to Light a Fire)

Thanks so much, Muse! Yes, you are spot on there. Solutions can be found in odd corners, I'll say. :)

I enjoyed the story, everyone seemed a bit OOC but not enough to make me stop reading. I liked the cow and Lucius interactions.

What a delightful tale. This had me smiling a lot. Poor Lucius having to try to create fire the Muggle way.

Was so happy to see them get the help from Hermione and Snape. What a lovely little universe and village you have created.

I do hope you are going to revisit this community.

I loved it. Thanks so much for writing and sharing.

Response from karelia (Author of Danse Macabre, or: Learning to Light a Fire)

Wow. *blushes furiously* THANK YOU!!! You totally made my day!Wildcard's response: Brilliant stuff. You deserved the review. So happy it made your day. Your story made mine too.

I love how well you illustrated the Malfoy's struggle against their pride and upbringing. It really made them sympathetic characters and helped me identify with them (and celebrate their successes, later)!
Thank you for sharing!
PS: The Severus/Hermione aspect was adorable. *^_^*
