aww, you kinda feel a little sorry for him, but at the same point, living an exciting life at this time period was quite hazardous to your health!

Yes -- much more perilous to have an exciting life than to observe it from the sidelines! Thanks for your review!~MMADfan
I like getting a version of these events from a third party. I didn't know whether to feel creepy that he was lurking in the shadows, taking it all in, or to feel sorry for him that he was given the role of outsider and was resigned to his fate. This was well done.

I think he's a bit of an ambiguous character, so I understand your mixed feelings about him!Glad you enjoyed it. :-) Thanks!

When I first read this, I had to do a double take and see if the author was really MMADfan ... I mean - WOAH!Did you not get enough coffee this morning, Madam Raven? *smirks* OK ok, don't hit me ... but this is just CREEPY! This guy CREEPS me out! He reminds me of some oily shadow creeping around, hoping to catch me unaware - menacing and calculating, and secretive and .... sneaky .... EW!Forget Riddle - this guy is just .... EEEEEWWWWWWWWWW! So if you were going for the "wig out" factor - you nailed it! Burton makes me think of a pedophile - his mentality certainly reminds me of someone like that. That said ... I do have something positive to say ... *winks* OK ok ok, stop throwing things at me! Seriously - your work is always good, and this has to be good to freak me out so much - ok - here is what did NOT freak me out.*snip*We left school, I went on to work in my father’s menagerie in Diagon Alley. Potter married Evans—a good choice on his part, and a much steadier influence on him than Black—and apparently took up with a secret group fighting He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Pettigrew had a job for a while charming the ink presses at the Quibbler, but then he gave that up—or was fired, I never learned which. Black lived off of money his uncle gave him, and I don’t think he ever tried to find work. Lupin had a tougher time of it, though his friends helped him as much as he’d allow them to. But when a few days every month, you turn up to work too ragged to be of any use, and always around the full of the moon, even the dimmest employer will twig to your affliction and fire you.*snip*It was interesting to see the 4-some through different eyes - not the eyes of Severus - who loathed the lot, or the eyes of McGonagall - who was the mother/disciplinarian, nor Dumbledore - who likely felt sorry for all of them - but someone almost indifferent - obviously not completely indifferent - as he was most certainly jealous of the four, but - well - its different. And your words about Lupin were interesting - and sad of course - but this whole yarn is sad - as I'm sure you know. What I was most interested in were the insights into Lupin and I found myself wanting to know more about Peter - for some reason.

Yeah, I definitely found Burton creepy, too, but using his point-of-view allowed me to do some things that would have been hard, otherwise, and, as you say, to show the Marauders through a different, though not completely impartial, character, and at the same time, to imply things about the character that he himself wouldn't necessarily want to admit, such as being jealous of the four, particularly James and Sirius. He's also more than a bit of a prig, himself. Not very moral, really, but loving to moralise about others' behaviour.I'm glad you liked it, and that my experiment with the character and with his point-of-view worked for you. It was fun to imagine what sort of person this fifth Gryffindor would be if we never heard of him in the books.

It's interesting to get the perspective of the Marauders' time from a character like Burton. He seems like a troubled figure, even if he didn't end up dead like the other four Gryffindors and Severus. He doesn't seem like the usual noble Gryffindor, although neither is Pettigrew.Sirius certainly has a problem with Severus, and it puts a different spin on events in PoA considering how badly Sirius treated Snape in the past. Certainly it didn't incline Severus toward Sirius's innocence, especially concerning that horrible "joke" involving werewolf Remus. Burton's an interesting first-person narrator - not entirely trustworthy, but a survivor, certainly. He sure isn't a noble one, though. It makes sense that Remus wouldn't be told about Black's plan, or he might have tried to stop it or seal himself off to avoid maiming or killing Sirius. He certainly seems like the nicest of that group. Once again, I'm reminded why I like Mr. Moony.Whatever his faults, Burton's certainly put off by Pettigrew by the end. I'm surprised to hear of him working at the Quibbler under Mr. Lovegood, presumably.

Indeed, he is troubled, and as you say, not entirely trustworthy, and he may be a survivor, but not exactly a noble one -- just as you point out.I always thought that Severus and Sirius were much alike, except that Sirius was more outwardly attractive than Snape and he came from a privileged background that he could afford to spurn, while Severus came from a poorer, mixed-blood background, and he wanted to belong. The dynamic between the Marauders and Snape was always an interesting one to me -- it seems like it must have had a lot of layers, and plenty of responsibility to spread around.I think Remus is the nicest of the group, too, and a gentle soul, just a bit too afraid of rejection to be as honest about things as he probably wishes he could be.

This was a fantastic story. I love how you used the first person perspective to shine light on things, especially the trips to Hogsmeade and then the prank they played on Severus. I still think that was a horrible thing for them to do and poor Severus having to suffer at their hands was just all kinds of wrong.I really ejoyed reading this story!!

Thanks! Using the first-person is new for me in my HP fanfic, but I thought it worked well here.Glad you enjoyed it!

Like the new POV of the 5th year prank. I always wondered, if James & Sirius were so unseparable, how Sirius would have pulled off such a dangerous prank on Snape without James's involvement. It always sounded unlikely to me. Poor Burton, he must have been lonely. I hope he had some Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff friends, at least.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Fifth Gryffindor)
Thanks -- I always figured that James must have found out about it after Sirius had pulled it -- maybe Sirius had come to him, laughing about it and expecting James to think it was funny, too, and being surprised when James didn't. At least, I hope that James had some decency in him! Glad you liked the different perspective on the Marauders. :-)

A very touching story, and an original way of explaining how James found out about Black's dangerous "prank"!

I always thought it was sad that at the end of the last war, all four of the "Marauders" were dead, as well as Lily and Severus, and all at relatively young ages, all of them gone from the world.I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This is really different than your usual story, and it's a different look at the marauders too.
It's interesting to see them from an outsider's perspective. We usually see them from either Severus, Remus or Sirius's PoV. Burton seems to be both jealous and contemptuous of them, as I expect may be typical of someone who doesn't quite fit in with the 'in' group, but isn't able to avoid them either. His comments on Remus's name made me chuckle.
Good job, as always!

Thanks! Glad you liked it. It began forming in my head several months ago when I was working on "Stray" and thinking about Sirius, Remus, and Severus, and how they each seem to the other.Yes, it is different from my usual, but it was enjoyable to write in a different style, with a different narrative p.o.v. I think it's the first time I've used first-person in an HP fic. I've always enjoyed playing with p.o.v. in telling a story, but it's still always been third-person narrative, so that was fun.He is both jealous & contemptuous of them. Not a very nice person, really, but no worse -- or better -- than the Marauders, in his own way. Thanks again!
