“There has been a great deal of speculation, both from scholars and in the popular press, about the sexual and romantic life of Albus Dumbledore and, to a lesser extent, Minerva McGonagall, and a popular mythology has grown up around the idea of a putative, unconsummated love between the two.” Why did they never get together, and what did Tom Riddle have to do with it?

I'm a middle-aged, professional writer of non-fiction and would-be professional writer of fiction who also writes Harry Potter fanfiction just for fun.
I’m a proud member of the Harry Potter Old Lady Smut Brigade, which means I’m most interested in the older female characters in the Harry Potter saga, particularly Minerva McGonagall.
If I had received my Hogwarts letter back in nineteen-mumble-mumble, I would most likely have been sorted into Ravenclaw, or so everyone tells me, probably because I’m a geeky data-freak (my Real Life™ requires me to read piles of medical journal articles.) I, however, think I’d feel right at home in Hufflepuff too, so I consider myself a Ravenpuff.
The fics I write may contain adult themes, and I will always warn for non-con, graphic violence, bestiality, incest, or underage sex. I don't warn for homosexual relationships or sex, or for threesomes/moresomes, unless they contain one of the aforementioned elements.

I have a blog: http://squibstress.wordpress.com/.
I'm also on LiveJournal and Twitter (@Squibstress).
I maintain a master list of (mostly Minerva-centric) recs at Diigo.

*snip*Whatever you conclude about me and my culpability in this crime, know this: I intend to discover who did this to you—to us—and when I lay hands on him, not only will he rue the day he was born, but he will have a long and painful interlude in which to do it.Best line in the story - I knew from about the second paragraph, where this was going and what Tom was up to - but it didn't make it any easier - I wish my dear Albus had the chance to crack Tom's head in half... I really do.

dsky sums up much of what I thought about this story - her explanation of her take on the piece was very much how I felt when I read it. I was just too upset to write more than I did earlier - I hate Riddle. I strongly wish Albus killed him when he had the chance... but knowing Albus, he would do everything imaginable in his considerable power not to kill anyone... the Riddles of this world - and there are far too many - are the cancers of everything pure and good.

Sorry it upset you.In this story, I think if Albus had gotten his hands on TR, he probably would have killed him. In canon, I don't believe they come face-to-face after 1957 until the battle in the Dept. of Mysteries, at which point Albus believes that Harry must be the one to kill him.
This is heartbreaking in so many ways.
First, the absolute horror of what happened to Minerva, no matter the perpetrator. The potential consequences are completely devastating. That (she thinks) it was Albus, who she not only knew, but loved and respected not only damages her relationship with him, but has the potential to damage all of her relationships with everyone she trusts, and would likely cause her to question her judgement in all things. And although rape isn't about sex, to have it be someone she wants as a lover... . How long before she could have any feeling of security at all?
Second, poor Albus, to lose his best friend, colleague, and potential lover, and have no idea why, then to discover that she was brutally raped, apparently by him, and she refuses to believe his innocence.
It seems he was able to convince her intellectually, or she wouldn't have come back to teach, but the last minute return strongly suggests that she is still unable to accept it emotionally.
The way you have written this, as a scholarly article depending on the historical record, leaves the level of eventual reconciliation unknown, and the implication that their relationship never fully recovered, even over decades, is again, heartbreaking. It also highlights Riddle's depravity and it's long-term effects. It's unfortunate that Albus wasn't able to punish him for what he did.
The juxtaposition of the scholarly record and the real-time PoV's of characters we think we know also highlights that history is more than a collection of dry facts, but is made by real people, with real passions and motivations. It's sometimes easy (for me at least) to forget that.

Sorry about the duplicate!
What an awful situation - should I describe it somehow, I'd say it's "a perfect horror" - Minerva went through a horrendous experience and her fear, aversion, pain and hurt were perfectly spot-on: just as Tom's callouseness and Albus's confusion.
Weirdly though, I somehow always pictured Tom to be attracted to McGonagall in a very twisted way because their position had to be unequal: they're both half-bloods, but once they knew each other I can see how Minerva was a bit haughty with Isobel McGonagall (her pureblood mother) having taught her the etiquette and the haughtiness that came with it, while Tom was nothing but a boy from the orphanage even if academically bright.
Minerva's love for Albus though...I don't think so, perhaps Tom should have polyjuiced into Dougal McGregor - a Muggle who Minerva was in love with.
Best!

Thanks for reading and commenting on my odd little story! The fact that Minerva and Tom were at school together (at least until JKR retconned Minerva) always made me wonder about their relationship. I imagine he'd be attracted to her power and that she would want little to do with him.Cheers!

You're welcome - little odd story indeed, but you have a knack for making each part sound different - Minerva's horror, Tom's calculations and Albus's confusion.
I know what you mean about Minerva having been attending Hogwarts at the same time as he did - I think originally it were the fans who made the math as it was said somewhere in the 4th book that Minerva was an energetic seventy year old at Harry's Yule Ball, but then JKR revealed a bunch of facts about her and told the world that Minerva was actually younger.
I had the same problem - I'm publishing a story about the Blacks (on FFnet for now as this site takes time to look the chapters over before they allow them to be posted) and when I started writing I also wanted Minnie to be Tom's contemporary, but then the facts came along...still, I made Minerva attend school together with Tom Riddle - much more fun this way: she's like a counter-force to him being a valiant and brave Gryffindor as she is.
Good luck with any further fics!
