I can't believe I'm doing this.
I've always been the steady, responsible one, the least impulsive witch imaginable and the very last person who anyone might expect might do something as surprising and spontaneous as this.
Five hundred invitations have gone out, nearly all of which have received an affirmative reply. Everyone of political or cultural importance in our world will be there; it frightens me to think that only about fifty or so of the people we've invited are actually people we like, and the rest were invited because there could be capital-C Consequences if we didn't ask them to come. We have engaged the most famous wizarding caterer to serve our guests a luxurious dinner in the great banquet hall at the Ministry of Magic. We have reserved the ballroom for dancing afterwards. The wedding of Hermione Granger, war heroine, and her equally famous fiancé is not supposed to be a low-key event. I took the preparations as seriously as I ever took my schoolwork, though I admit that I would much rather have planned something far, far simpler.
If it had been entirely up to me, the only people in attendance at my wedding would be me, my beloved, our two witnesses and the witch or wizard who performs the ceremony, really. I do not want or need this "wedding of the century" business. It disgusts me that something as personal as our wedding has been turned into yet another political event.
And yet, tonight I find that I can't resist the temptation to slip into my pale blue wedding robe just to feel the smooth, cool silk of it against my skin. I seldom purchase anything fancy for myself, and this robe, cut to resemble a mediaeval houppelande, is probably the most gorgeous article of clothing I have ever worn. As I admire my reflection—I'll never really be beautiful, but this robe helps me to come close—I hear a noise behind me. I whirl around into a combat stance, my wand sliding easily into my hand.
But as it turns out, my visitor doesn't mean me any harm. "Darling!" I exclaim, seeing my fiancé clumb in through the window. He's wearing a formal black robe with silver detailing, and the length of it is giving him a little trouble as he tries to sneak in with some semblance of dignity. Holding back a laugh, I put on my "Bossy Hermione" persona as he barely avoids tripping over his own feet. "What are you doing here? You know you're not supposed to see me until the ceremony tomorrow! And if you really had to see me tonight, why did you climb through the window instead of Apparating here?"
"Why not?" he asks, giving me what he probably thinks is a sexy half-smile, though it's really only very cute. (Not, of course, that I'd ever say so.) "And here I was, thinking that you were reading my mind, dressed as you are. That's a beautiful robe, by the way. As for why I'm here, I've come to elope with you."
"WHAT?!"
The corners of his mouth are tugging up again. "If you're having this much trouble hearing now, perhaps you should visit someone at St. Mungo's to check your ears before you go completely deaf. As I told you, I'm here to elope with you. But I thought that it might not have been so much of a surprise after all, as you appear to have anticipated me."
"I heard you perfectly well the first time, love," I smile. "It's just—we've been planning this for months. Won't it be a scandal if we simply fail to show up for the wedding tomorrow?"
"I've taken care of that," he smirks. "I've given the officiating witch a letter stating that our guests are to enjoy the party as planned; she'll read it to them at what would have been the ceremony. There's no need to disappoint them entirely, after all."
"But why?"
He steps closer to me and pulls me into his arms. I return his embrace, and as he strokes my back he tells me, "I know I haven't been as involved in the planning as I probably ought to have been, but even I have seen how much pressure you've been under to make our wedding day into a perfect and very public celebration. And if I know you, my dear, you won't be able to relax at all tomorrow or enjoy the festivities you've been planning for so long for fear that you'll disgrace us in some way by not being absolutely perfect. No, don't protest—I know you too well. So instead of letting you put yourself through all that stress, I've arranged for us to be married tonight. The witch who will marry us is waiting at the Ministry, and so are our witnesses. We'll leave for the honeymoon immediately afterwards. That way, the peacocks still get their chance to strut and we get to enjoy our own wedding."
I let loose a breath that I hadn't realized I was holding. "Thank you so much. I think I got so caught up in our supposed 'responsibilities' for the day that I lost sight of the fact that it's our wedding, not everyone else's. But think of the trouble it will cause when somebody realizes that we're not going to show up!"
This time, he gives me an outright grin. "That is, of course, another draw to the idea."
I laugh. "You are so bad sometimes."
"I am. But that is why you love me, isn't it?"
"Well…partly," I smile. "Shall we go?"
"After you, my lady."
I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm so happy and it feels so right. We climb through the window and disappear into the night, giggling like the giddy schoolchildren that we never really were.

Author's Notes: So who do you think it is? It's someone from canon, and I have my own suspicions about who it is, but aside from that, even I'm not really sure—though he's rather obviously not Ron. Mind, regardless of my own confusion, I have to admit that this is the most fun I've had writing a "serious" fic in a long time.
This was written for a Saturday Night Drabble prompt by HermioneDiggory. "Runaway bride! Hermione shocks the wizarding world by fleeing her highly-anticipated society wedding."

I have a suspicion that it might be Severus by the smirks and barely smiles. But I'm so used to them as a couple that my perceptives are sometimes limited.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
It really is interesting how our own biases can make us perceive things, and that's more or less the point I was trying to make. Severus and Draco are by far the most popular choices, which I more or less expected (though this doesn't mean, of course, that I did or didn't write Hermione's fiancé with either of them in mind), but a few names have cropped up that I can honestly say I didn't expect. It's been interesting to see the responses which have cropped up, and I may do something similar to this again in the future—not too soon, though of course. Ambiguity can get boring after awhile. And as always, thank you for reviewing.
As I was reading this delightful fic I was assuming it was Draco. I can see a grownup Draco enjoying tweaking his parents by not showing up. After reading your responses to the reviews I don't know who the other choice could be. Percy went through my mind but I think he would enjoy the pomp of a wedding too much to give it up. Can't wait to find out:)
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
I'm very glad that you liked the fic, of course, but I'm not going to say outright who I think the groom is, as I consider my own opinion about him to be no more or less valid than anyone else's. Thank you for reviewing.
I think that it is Snape. Well, that is who I would have said it was. LOL Great story. It lets everyone believe that it is their favorite character.

Thanks for reviewing, and I'm glad you liked the fic.
With all of the emphasis on important guests that had to be invited, my initial guess was a political figure, possibly Kingsley Shacklebolt. However, the last line, "giggling like the giddy schoolchildren that we never really were," makes it sound like someone of Hermione's generation, someone she was at Hogwarts with, not someone older. The only two of Hermione's age I can see whose status would require politically or culturally important invitees, would be Harry or Draco. And Harry wouldn't want such a wedding and would put his foot down for a quiet wedding to begin with. This is fun - will you ever tell us who you decided the fiance was?
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
I'm glad you enjoyed the fic, and I thank you for reviewing. You've obviously put a great deal of thought into the possible identity of Hermione's intended; you've come to a very logical conclusion. I doubt I'll ever say outright who I think it is; people seem to be having fun trying to figure out who it is and it would be a shame to put a stop to that (and I suspect that that's exactly what would happen). I wouldn't want to inadvertently look like I was invalidating any of the excellent guesses that people have made. That said, I do admit that I've settled on two possible wizards for reasons that I think make sense given what we see of Hermione's fiancé. One of them has definitely been mentioned in other reviews—he's been quite popular, actually. The other, however, has not been mentioned yet. Make what you will of that.
Why, Severus, of course! How could it be anyone else!
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
He may be a bit too mild-mannered for Snape—but love can do strange things to a person, so (especially considering the level of formality in his speech) he's definitely a valid choice. Thank you for reviewing.
When I read that he wants to avoid publicity, is equally famous, and knows her so well, my guess is Harry. When I read that she loves him because he is so bad, my guess is Draco.Fun story, Thanks.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
Thank you for reviewing; I'm glad you enjoyed the fic.
I think there is a very good chance it could be Draco. If not him, then someone lesser known in canon.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
Maybe.
Hm. I'm not sure who Hermione's fiance is here, but I notice that he seems older, neither terribly formal nor informal... and I get the strong feeling that he's a Slytherin. Less formal than Lucius, though, so I'm thinking either Severus or Draco.Well done and a great use of the prompt to boot!
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
Thanks. I'm very glad you liked my use of the prompt; it's actually the first scenario that came to mind. (I guess I'm a bit less cynical than I thought.) As for the question of who her fiancé is...well, it's been very interesting to see which names keep coming up in the reviews. Severus and Draco seem pretty popular, and a couple of people have favoured Sirius Black—I'm not quite sure how they came to that conclusion, though I admit he's a very valid option, especially given the spontaneity that Hermione's un-named fiancé shows. That said, after a re-read I think I've finally figured out who he is. But I wouldn't dream of spoiling the fun for anyone else by telling, of course.
Lucius is my pick. :)
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
You may be right, though I admit I haven't really got his characterization down pat yet.
He kind of sounds like Sirius. A return from the veil would make him famous. Lovely.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
Thanks, blue.
I don't have a clue who I think it is, nor do I care. He knows her well enough and cares enough about her to anticipate her anxiety over the event, and her desire to have a more private affair, and he makes that happen. He is a definite keeper. If they are happy, I'm happy. Nicely done.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
Thank you very much.
I"m thinking Severus or Draco. This was a fun little story, if I was Hermione I would have run away an elope too. :)
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
I think I would as well, actually. Thanks for reviewing!
sirius black, but then I'm biased:)
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
Maybe. Thanks for your feedback.
This is really good. I would have to say that my suspicions would be either George, Snape (if he lived) or Harry. Those are three of the famous heroes of the war. But my first pick with the way you wrote this would be Harry, because he knows Hermione so well.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
You may be right. Thanks for reviewing!
Wow:) I can't think of anyone else calling Hermione "My dear" and the groom sounds at least a bit older than her, but I haven't got a clue. Bill Weasley, maybe? He jokes with her in a wa that's TOO informal for Severus, darn it:)Lovely story though, nice way to start Sunday morning:)Warm regards,Fizzabella

Thanks for reviewing; I'm very glad you enjoyed this. Fluff isn't really one of my strong points, but it's nice to know I'm getting better at it.By the way, you're absolutely right about her fiancé being older than she is—that's one of the few things I know for sure about him, and I do have my own suspicions about who he is. I've always thought that she'd be best off with someone who's older than she is; let's face it, not too many of the wizards (or witches!) who are about her age could keep up with her intellectually or have the courage to stand up to her when she's being too bossy.
Response from Pennfana (Author of A Sudden Change of Plans)
*sigh* Must stop trying to type HTML into the text box.
Whoever he is, he's probably a Gryffindor! A Hufflepuff wouldn't want to risk offending anyone and would consider it his duty to attend, a Ravenclaw would consider it prudent to attend, and the Slytherin would consider it politically expedient to attend. A Gryffindor would be reckless enough to blow it off...and my bet is on one of the other Weasley boys, especially one of the twins.
