An 8 chapter Christmas murder mystery starring Hermione Granger and Severus Snape. It is post-Hogwarts, post-Voldemort and has political, philosophical, sociological overtones. Vaguely compliant to HBP but not DH. Assumes Dumbledore's death in HBP was staged. *Contents may be disturbing to readers*

Reviews for Christmas Presents Undisguised
I just read the last 3 chapters. It's an intriguing story.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
thank you for yr interest in the story.
A mystery wrapped in philosophical dissertation.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
I try... I try... Now, someone should tell the journal Hypatia that rejected my Plato paper of my philosophical writings. Apparentrly the 1st anonymous reviewer told me taht my idea in the paper was bizzare!
Another amazing chapter! I like the way Hermione sneaks in the private joke to Severus about the Conan Doyle quote, as Ron clearly doesn't know his Muggle literature. Also the contrast between Lucy who became blind not by her own choice, and the cave-dwellers who do not see the light by choice. So Severus is going to be the one to get Harry and the Aurors there? Does it matter who this new victim is, as her identity is not stated here? And you're going to answer everything in just one more chapter! Okay, I'll be waiting....
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
I'm glad you're enjoying the story. Severus has other plans...You'll learn abt them in the next chapter. hopefully, it will tie up all the loose ends. I'll give you the victim's identity in the next chapter. I threw in the Platonic cave analogy for a contrast to Lucy...
This is an incredibly interesting story and I am looking forward to the dénouement. Fascinating methodology as always.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
I'm glad you're enjoying it. the final chapter will be up by wednesday 21st dec.
You know, upon re-reading I'm tempted to agree with Blahgirl that Neville's remark is confusing. In hindsight, it probably should have been "I'll take you to someone who can" or something like that. The irony here is that I'm always changing pronouns saying they are confusing and this one got by me in both drafts.
Oh well, if I was perfect noone would want to be my friend.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
There, there, love - human error happens. Still... the plot progresses...
Great compelling story. It always is the one person that you never assume. I loved the footnotes on each chapter. It taught some things and made me think.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Thank you for your interest and kind words vis-a-vis this story.
Excellent as usual. Glad they're getting Dolohov out of Azkaban. I hope Hermione won't be the one in danger! Thanks for the update.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
There will be some danger inthe last chapter, but fear not - everything will be satisfactorily resolved (at least i hope so)
Oh the suspense is killing me.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
It's killing me too.
As an engineer I could never understand the Salem witch trials in terms of the innocent being dead. So what is is point? I often wondered what was done in the aftermath to punish the accusers of the innocent? In other words, I am punished for my innocense by death? I still simply cannot understand the reasoning of these people.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Oh well... I don't understand it either but my experiences with the poli sci dept here it's damned if you and damned if you don't.... that spirit of reasoning (or lack of it) is still very much alive and rampant in the world.
Oh, wow! Excellent. I'm so nervous that something will go wrong and one of them will end up being / nearly being victims. **chews nails** Great chapter. Also, I liked Severus' reaction when Ron was touching Hermione. Teehee.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Glad you're enjpying it. Something very nearly does go wrong...the next chapter will be up soon, hopefully by wednesday. Just in time for x'mas!
OH NO!! Now what??? Will Pip become friends with Snape and help find Ms Granger???
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
We may hope so... thanks for reading this story
I'm hooked! Please update soon. Also, do you have an LJ? Can I friend you? Or, if you don't want, that's fine.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
You may friend me at livejournal! I welcome readers... - http://www.livejournal.com/users/mmestrange/. Look me up, by all means. I'm glad you like the story. Fear not, dear reader, the story will be wrapped up by x'mas. entre nous, some of my readers are coming too close to the truth (of the tale of course)...
Response from zambonigirl (Reviewer)
What? You mean that either Neville or Ron did it? LOL. Kidding. I'm not trying to figure it out, I want to wait for you to unfold it for me.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
ah...i shan't reveal who did it. there are 2 more chapters to gp. all right, i'll log in and friend you!
I just read all six chapters at once - amazing story!! Definitely intriguing, and I love all the historical references. I'm sorry Dolohov looks fated to die, and that Severus and Hermione seem helpless to do anything about it. This Neville looks like he could be the killer or mastermind - he must have some guilt from having helped destroy shrines, and Gudgeon seems willing to do whatever Neville says, even kill. But this Harry is someone I'd like to see get offed! Hey, can you make Harry the killer's last victim?? I hope Harry doesn't remind you of someone in your poli sci department....
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
thank heavens, some is reading the footnotes! thank you! harry of this story reminds me only too painfully of the present head of the poli sci dept... i'll see whether i can rework it to accomodate your request for harry to be the last victim... hmm, nope. it would spoil the ending... glad you're enjoying the story.
I'm really curious about what Hermione's debt to Dumbledore (almost wrote "Voldemort!") is. I also like the manipulative Dumblemort you have here, much more on-pitch with how I view him. And Snape's chivalry doesn't really seem out of character, for some reason. I remember in Book 5 when Minerva returned to the school after her illness, and Snape seemed genuinely pleased to see her, until she awarded Gryffindor so many points.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
It's in Ch 5, where Albus explictly uses the stageddeath in HBP to blackmail Severus into continuing hiswork as an Unspeakable Unspeakable. As for Hermione,it's hinted in ch 2 that the ministry (read: Harry)has a personal interest in the investigation. That'swhy Hermione's dragged into it. She's an Unspeakableas a favour to Harry; and it's not stated explictly, but it can be discerned that Albus uses the'Harry/Ministry' line to get Hermione to continue withthe Unspeakables. hope that helps... Whatever Snape's temper, I always pictured him as cognisant of manners
Oh, the loup-garrou. Hehe! I tell my son about him at times. I'm glad to see you mention him. I feel quite sorry for Antonin, and I wish Hermione/Severus would be able to save him. I really detest Neville in this story and believe I would enjoy seeing him caught and dealt with as Lucius was. These methods are quite barbaric. I'm suspcious of everyone. LOL! Neville, Gudgeon, and even Ron. I think Nev's line of thinking is ridiculous. They all know that innocents were tortured under Voldemort's rule and admitted to things they did not do. I'm glad our Unspeakables pointed that out. I wonder if Neville condones such behaviour because his parents were tortured until they broke. Hmmm...
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Suspicion of everyone is good! and here i was thinking that i had given too much away in chs 5-6. nev's thinking was actually quite popular and still popular in some societies... the legal system here where i live is indicative of that. and yes, nev condones the 'perks' of his job because his parents were tortured until they broke.
Ah! So very interesting. I've been keeping away from the archive lately, what with Real Life forcing me to involve myself in it and all. I'm missing LoF, but this story is very intriguing.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
glad you're enjoying this - it is but a modest effort.
What an interesting premise. Can't wait to read more
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Glad you liked it. Dokeep reading and guessing.
Wow, great first chapter, I love the mystery that's unfolding..good work...;)
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Glad you like it. Mystery is set to deepen. Keep reading. Many thanks.
What ruined the Jack the Ripper illusion? Was it the sex of the victims?
I missed the background illusions to Christmas. I'll have to look more closely. Sometimes I read a story so deeply that I miss the overall stuff.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
This story is set during the run-up to christmas. read carefully and you will discover in every chapter (almost), there is some hint of christmas cheer going on in the background. contrast this with the investigation and the murders. that is one thing i intended the readers to do. one of the things i had anticipated readers to pick up was this - christmas is coming (in the story anyhow) and everyone save the bureaucrats and our investigators are preparing for the Yuletide. Why is that? I meant my readers to think about that.
If you reread the chapter - you will notice that there are people selling x'mas stuff in the background alongside the beheaded traitor souvenirs.
Jack the Ripper targeted women of ill repute, my killer does not. Jack the Ripper had some kind of medical knowledge - he cut properly into the bodies etc, whereas, my killer hacks, slashes etc. hence the difference.
Response from Periwinkle (Reviewer)
Yeah, I saw the Christmas setting in chapter one. I missed it in Chapters 2 and 3 -- I might be getting too close to the story. Sometimes betas don't see the story for the grammar, to butcher a cliche.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Ah, but you've done a very good job of it, I must add. Thank you lots! *air kiss*
It's almost got a Jack the Ripper feel to it. Or at least the random deaths in poor sections of London part does. However, the brutality makes it seem like it would be a crime of passion or hatred. Looking forward to more. I alsways enjoy your Snape and Hermione, and I enjoy a good 'whodunnit.' Cheers! GG
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
I started out with a Jack the Ripper feel, that is, until my beta reminded of a little something that threw that notion off my head. You'll pick it up soon as the difference between jack and my killer. Do keep guessing. A whodunit isn't any fun unless people make wrong stabs in the dark.
I dont yet see how this is a christmas story, but you have presented a compelling mystery in the aftemath of HBP. I was half expecting Snape to cast an AK on Lucius. Keep us posted on updates. It willbe interesting tosee how SS and HG collaborate to solve the murders.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
the pun in the title requires sime thinking. hg & ss have presented peace as a gift to wizarding london, and in return, they are given freedom from the unpseakable unspeakables. in investigating the murders, they are shown that harry is not quite what he seems as a minister or indeed a person (neither is albus for that matter). And the revelation of the killer (keep guessing) shows that presentation is one thing - the being and reality dichotomy.the story is set during the rum-up to christmas. read carefully and you will discovere in every chapter, there is some hint of christmas cheer going on in the background. contrast this with the investigation and the murders. that is one thing i intended the readers to do. one of the things i had anticipated readers to pick up was this - christmas is coming (in the story anyhow) and everyone save the bureaucrats and our investigators are preparing for the Yuletide. Why is that? I meant my readers to think about that.
This story is exciting! I am looking forward to reading more.
Thank you.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Exciting? Many thanks. I never thought it that way. I was writing a longer locked room mystery and couldn't finish it in time for the X'mas season. So here this short one is instead. Thank you for your kind support of my work.
I am curious. It seems too easy to be Dolohov, doesn't it? I find myself leery of Neville... Hmmm.... Anyway, more linking of the arms. muahahaha (big grin). I had narrowed eyes as I read Dumbledore's words to Snape, but I felt better after hearing his admission to Fawkes. Good chapter.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Dumbledore is a tricky one. fear not, it's nigh over anyway...
well, then. just how much has Hermione told Neville? Because if she hasn't told him of the methods of dissection and he knows that the insides have been hacked up, that could be incriminating. I am slightly inclined to think its Neville, even with the brutal death of Gran Longbottom. Or perhaps becasue of it. I mean, based off of how she treated him, I might be incline to snap and do evil things. I confess, I do so love the morbid and dark stories. Especially with evil Potter! the corruption of a soul is an intruigng process and many of the parallels that can be drawn between Riddle and Potter are valid. Anyhow, your philsophical political etc undertones are fantastic, I feel liek I'm reading soemthing worthwhile, which makes me feel better about reading your story instead of studying. However, the following line is slightly confusing,I have an even better idea,’ announced Neville proudly. ‘I’ll let you meet him!’since it makes it sounds as tho Neville's taking them to meet Dolohov. Overall though, great work! Update Update Update! I'm dying to find out what they have over Hermione
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
hermione hasnt told Neville much - that's the point. but my stress is this - everyone in the wizarding UK knows abt the show executions - they know how its done etc. gives you something to think about, n'est ce pas? That was meant to deliberately confuse. You want Dolohov - you've got him. stay tuned...
I am tempted to think the killer is Neville.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of Christmas Presents Undisguised)
Oh, i shall say nothing on the matter.
