I have been a fan of HP fanfiction since early 2005. That summer I discovered Bambu's fabulous "Guard... Check... Mate" here at TPP and realized that there were actually people out there who agreed with me that Dumbledore was NOT an inherently positive figure, that Dumbledore was manipulative and in many cases just as disrespectful of human life as Voldemort. I'd not thought of pairing Hermione and Severus, but suddenly it seemed so obvious!
And I've been stuck here every since!

Thank you for that beautiful journey you have taken us on.
Great story--I love the way that you developed a character who was so underdeveloped in canon.

Thank you very much. That was the type of prompt that really appealed to me this go-round.

I love how the characters used were minor ones not really discussed in canon. Well done!

Wonderful. I love the mirroring of the beginning and the end. I do think it is fitting that Luna died doing something she loved. And thank you so much for fleshing out Greg and showing there was much more to him than a henchman.

I'm glad you liked Greg's character. I think it's awful how JKR just left so much potential wasted in one-dimensional characters that served only to illustrate how "great" Gryffindor and Harry were. Thanks for the read and review!

Now you've gone and made me cry, darn it. Good story.

Thank you so much! An emotional response means the story accomplished what I hoped it would.

Not what I was expecting from your summary, but I liked this very much. It was nice that you gave Greg some depth and a friendship with someone unexpected.
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
What was it about the summary that changed your expectations? Did the story meet the expectations from the summary or did the summary sound better than the story turned out?Thank you for your feedback. I enjoy hearing from readers!
Response from debjunk (Reviewer)
Well, from the summary it seemed like Greg would mostly be dealing with the death of Vincent, but that was more of a background part of the story. I loved how you followed him, and Luna, through their entire lifetime and the way he became someone you would like to have as a friend, instead of the dimwitted Death Eater he was in Canon. So, in essence, the summary only touched the surface of the story, which is what a summary is supposed to do, I suppose. (duh) Anyway, the story was much better than I had even been hoping from the summary.
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
Oh, good. I'm glad it wa sbetter. I was afraid the summary seemed misleading. I'd hoped to show that even years and years after Vincent's death, there were still ramifications that prevented Greg from just ignoring it or getting over it. Thank you again for the input!

An absolute fabulous story! I loved the friendship between Greg and Luna and how the story came full circle at the end. Well done.

Oh my goodness, thank heaven for the random story button. Without it, I would never have found this wonderful little gem of a story. I LOVED every little bit of it. The friendship, the grieving and healing gone through, the love that blossomed, and the beautiful repeating of the funeral scenes. This is just a most lovely story of a couple of lives that we would normally not focus on in this world and I'm so very happy that you brought it to be. An instant favorite. LOVE IT!
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
Thank you so much! Though my OTP is SSHG, I have to admit this is my favorite story I've written. I always felt that JKR did such a disservice by making Gryffindor out to be the heroes and basically bullying Slytherin, so I really wanted to humanize a Slytherin. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for taking the time to review.
This is fabulous! Utterly fabulous! It makes me feel all mushy inside. Why aren't there more stories like this?

Now you did it. You brought tears to my eyes! There are so many things I 'd like to comment on, and I'm sure I'm going to forget half of it until this review is finished. The idea of pairing up a "Misled One" with a "Rescuer" is a wonderful idea; and in the case of Greg and Luna a life-long friendship was founded. The way you repeated the funeral scene really brought the story to full circle. But there always is hope - as Greg recognises first through Luna and the throught his little grand-daughter.I liked that Draco invited Greg and wanted to make him his son's godfather. What Draco said about him not being able to remember standing up for anybody, that peole died in standig up for hem andhe now has to live with that on his conscious, is very wise. All in all, I can only applaud you for a wonderful story.

What an interesting story! It's unconventional that the friendship supercededs the romance, but it is beautiful, too: the blending of the three families in one little LunaChild.
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
I really wanted to show how connected everyone was, and how the wizarding world really intersects in so many families. I'm glad it didn't appear too wordy or too much information. Thank you for the read and the review!

This was really touching. I loved the tradition of holding a candle. It is so nice that Greg developed realstionships with Luna and became frieds with Draco again. You painted both Greg and Vincent very well, quite believably. Thank you for this.

What were you expecting? I was hoping to stay away from romance and try to stick as close to canon as possible. Thanks for the review!

Oh My goodness!! I'm so glad I read this. I'm crying, though and I have to be honest -- I don't usually cry from fan-fics. I'm normally the one making people cry. Terrific Job!!
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
I am thrilled that you enjoyed the story. I really wanted people to look at Goyle and see him as person, rather than simply as Malfoy's Goon. Hopefully that will extend to other Slytherins who have such interesting stories.Thank you for the read and the review!

This is really a very good story. I read it out of duty, because I promised myself I'd read everything in the Challenge, but I'm glad that I did. I never would have thought Goyle's story could interest me, but you made it your own, and injected life into a one-dimentional character.
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
I was hoping people would take a chance and read stories other than their OTP. I know Goyle and Luna aren't a traditional couple for a story, but I chose to focus on the friendship so people wouldn't be turned off. Thank you for the review and the read!

This is such a wonderful story, I am glad I stumbled over it! I am normally not into Luna, and much less into goyle, but you portraied them both perfeclty. The story is sweet and sad at the same time, and it works very well across the decades.Honestly, to read the date 2081 made me shiver!Well done!
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
2081 is a long way off. I can't imagine being 100 years old. Thank you for reading!

Whoa. Who would have thought a Greg Goyle story could bring me to tears? What an amazing story you've told here. Thanks for sharing.
Response from CharmedForce (Author of Candle)
I'm glad you enjoyed the story well enough to make an emotional connection. That was my goal: to portray a Slytherin that Harry (and JKR) always thought of as one-dimensional and evil and make that Slytherin a person. Thank you for reading and reviewing.
