Pomona Sprout is known as the gentle and patient Herbology teacher. But it didn’t start out that way.

Sorry, Liz, darling, it looks like this will stay a one-shot.The rest of what I had in mind didn't ever morph into anything. I originally pictured this as a story being told a chapter at a time from each faculty member's POV....Flitwick was damned obstinate about telling his story though and that started a landslide--no one else would cooperate once he said "NO!" to telling his story. Convince 'em to tell their stories, and I'll gladly write 'em.

I'm a teacher so I loved this! I had a similar experience to Prof Sprout--I was student teaching and the husband of the teacher that I was working with got extremely ill, so she took off for the next six months. So I had to teach six classes of rowdy, low achieving seventh graders by myself even though I had no experience whatsoever. I guess it made me a better teacher, but at the time I felt so overwhelmed. Are you a teacher too?

Yes, I teach. Some of the things in the story were semi-autobiographical. I'm not as upbeat as I made Sprout, but other aspects actually happened when I was in my 1st and 2nd years of teaching. Thanks for reading and for the lovely review.

you provided a nice backstory for this character about whom we know so little. very human and believable take on the prompt.

Thank you! I'm pleased you found it believable and yet human. Some of the events listed were loosely based on my 1st year teaching at an inner city school.

Would that all teachers read this story. Students would be considerably happier with better teachers!

Would it surprise you to know that a teacher wrote this? I can't claim to have Sprout's patience, but I do try to do my best by my students. Thank you for reviewing!

Very nicely done. I really love this filler for a character we really know so little about. And I can completely imagine someone feeling exactly like her when forced into a profession that really isn't wanted.

*nods* I've seen it happen. Thank you for the kind review. I appreciate it.

He died? Gads, talk about being trapped into a commitment! Talk about stepping up to the plate, ah, er, pot! Oh, that first term – poor gal! I’d expect that from the Slytherins! But the Gryffindors too? (I think you implied that) I can’t believe that the Headmaster told her that her classroom issues were my problem and to find a way to deal with them. I’d be livid too! It’s good that she started ‘to be more understanding about their questions and requests for repeating information.’ Apologizing to the ‘older’ students probably made them feel ‘adult to adult’ which is a good tactic in my book.
This was enjoyable. I liked the first person, almost as if I was reading her letter to me. Nicely done.

Originally I intended for there to be a series of interviews--a new teacher trying to find his/her way and speaking to all the 'old-timers' to get ideas...but the Muse started suffering from exhaustion with the start of school. (Yes, I teach.) Many of the situations Sprout had to deal with I loosely based on my 1st year at an inner city school. As for the Gryffindors--yeah, they may be the darlings of most of the staff, but that doesn't mean that they aren't a PITA (pain in the ass) for the new teacher. I've seen it happen. Hell, I've been the recipient...*snerk*Thank you for the wonderful review. I appreciate it.

An interesting take on how Pomona cameto teaching and learned to love itl Thank you!

My pleasure. This was therapeutic to write. Some of her problems actually existed on one form or another in my 1st year at an inner city school.

Teaching when you are still known as a student among your pupils must be hard. Word spread from the ill-meaning Slytherins to the younger ones - and so everyone tried to make life hard for her.You pictured Pomona's growing with the task very well. The moment it occured to her were the difference lay and her struggling to become a better teacher. Very believeable.

Thank you. I took parts of this story from RL--my 1st year teaching at an inner city school. I've had to evolve my way of doing things every year--sometimes with more success than other times. I tried to show how her attitude really does affect the entire campus. And it really does take just one student to turn an entire class against the teacher. I've seen it happen. I've had it happen for that matter. Again, thank you for the wonderful review.

This is really a neat story. I have to ask you if you have any teaching experience? I don't, but this tale sounds plausible, as though it could actually happen.I really like what you have given to Sprout's character. Very good.

I substituted for 4 years while I was finishing my degree. I've been teaching for the last 4 years in an inner city middle school. Many of the events in this story of Sprout's evolution within education are loosely based on events from my first 2 years at the school I'm at. I'm pleased that you like how I chose to portray a character we know so little about. Thank you for the review.

What a different side to Sprout. I rather like it. Gives her more character. :) Thanks

A very good progression through the growth of a teacher. It was a little disturbing to see the Headmaster not help her in any way, but his reasons were actually good ones.
Response from queenp (Author of How Sprout Learned to Love Teaching)
That part was semi-autobiographical. I teach and my 1st year, anytime I went to administration with a problem, the only response I got is "Well, what are you doing?" which I had just answered or "Have you contacted the parent yet?" I received no support from y principals. I'm glad you liked the story, even if that one reminiscence seemed a bit disturbing.
