I have loved the written word since watching my mother’s fingers trace the lines of a book, luxuriating in riveting tales and well-turned phrases. Many a night I read until dawn, a plastic flashlight hidden under the covers to light the pages as I raced the rising sun to finish my latest must-read.
Since joining the HP fandom, I've been privileged to receive more than 50 awards, including Best Author (Quill to Parchment Awards) and Best Classic Author (Most Potente Passions). Among others, my stories have won awards for Best Hurt/Comfort (Spoils of War, Morning Has Broken), Best Novel Length (Calling Card, Guard…Check…Mate), Best One Shot (A Beach in Ireland), Best WIP (Saving a Death Eater, The Summoning), Favorite Overall Story (Complexities), and Readers’ Choice (A Quest of Paladins).
Aside from a judicious polish for formatting and egregious typos, I don't plan on revising my early work. Those stories are the stepping stones of my writing journey. Please note some stories contain adult content. None is more graphic than equivalent scenes in the television shows True Blood or Game of Thrones, and age appropriate warnings are posted.
I no longer write fanfiction prolifically. Like many fanfic authors, my focus has shifted to original work. A member of the Romance Writers of America and the Southern California Writers Association, I write under my name: Lin Thornhill.
My original story Verisimilitude published in Thoroughly Modern Monsters (Story Spring Publishing, 2013) reached the top 100 fantasy anthologies and broke into the top 10 in the UK the first month of release. Ben and Christine’s story will continue in 2016.
Fixation, my latest short story, slated for publication in J. Aldis’ anthology Immanence, with a winter 2015-2016 release, is particularly exciting as it anchors the Messengers of Inari novel series I’ve been developing for the past year.

"Compared to his behavior from the war years, Severus was now quite domesticated, but it would never do to forget he had once been feral." Best line ever! :)

Hermione is in so deep already... ;)

Indeed she is, but her history with Ron has left her exceedingly wary of crossing that line with Severus.

Tough story to review. I don't know where my first attempt went. Thanks for sharing your imagination with us. I hope you continue to be inspired with new ideas.

I hate it when I write a comprehensive review only to have it eaten by the internet. I can never quite recapture that first one, although I have tried. In any event, thank you for reading the story and enjoying it enough to have left me wonderful reviews. Thank you!

I can just see Lucius' tombstone now:Lucius MalfoyChoked to death after hearing the phrase "all goes tits up."RIPHe's so prudish, LOL!It's a good thing that the tension and awkward conversations that are bound to come up were discussed by Hermione and Lucius. Best to get everything out in the open if they are to move on. And neither seems to have any animosity about it all at this point, but that won't keep it from being uncomfortable at times.Interesting. I never would have guessed what your creature was. Good thing Hermione did. And I am loving protective Lucius. I don't typically like him, and even I am feeling a little swoony over him.Hermione handled the ghost just right as things could have gone poorly if she'd misspoken or acted irrationally at some point.I hope the ghost council goes easy on her if she promises to never hurt anyone again. It will be interesting, no matter what. Looking forward to more!

I'm giggling at your concept of poor Lucius' tombstone. I see him as a little formal, and plebeian language from a woman (even a Muggle-born) would throw him for a bit of a loop. I imagine him cringing at Bellatrix's coarse language.Having said that, I had a lot of fun with the Lucius/Hermione dynamic. They're not a natural pairing in terms of friendship or romance, but it's a fun challenge to find common ground for the two.As for the ghost council ... hmmm ... well, if I said something it would be telling! Thanks, as always, for your very kind comments.

Interesting that they now know the riddle. But I wonder if it is really her. Based on her current position as both bound and a ghost, it doesn't seem as if her wings have carried her to safety. Perhaps the riddle refers to someone / something else. Maybe that is why the answers are always incorrect. They get distracted into thinking she i asking about herself.
Response from Bambu (Author of Riddle Me This)
Your suppositions all have merit, and yet, I cannot say because it would give too much away. I'm very pleased you're so intrigued. Thanks for letting me know.

I am rethinking her weapon: red wrapped with gold, Griffindor colors. In chapter one when she remembers the man who betrayed her, I thought Voldemort. Now I am thinking Godric Gryffindor. Perhaps that is why he felt like a kindred spirit. Perhaps she is the model of the Griffindor mascot, perhaps the knowledge he gained from her is what propelled him to the top of the wizard heap. If this is the case, I wonder if she were alive or already a ghost then. Could she have died while awaiting his return... well, hell hath on fury like...An unlikely theory, but interesting to think about...
This chapter really fleshed out your characters. I like that you've chosen to use Penny. It seems the same secondary characters get used over and over again, so it is nice to see a different one. Because really, the less we know about someone, the more licence you can take with their character. The Hermione/Lucius dynamic is great. Clearly they are never going to be best buddies, but this is the sort of situation that can bring people together, and allow them to dispel of past feelings of animosity. I would hate it if you had them jumping in to work side by side right off the bat, but I think that given a little time to warm up, they could make a good team. What was Severus thinking, going to the sphinx?I am still loving this!
Response from Bambu (Author of Riddle Me This)
It's really funny you should mention the trend in secondary characters. When I started The Summoning (years ago now) I implied a Ron/Pansy pairing. Recently I got a review telling me how overused the pairing was. I laughed aloud because when I wrote it, I was the only author who had paired them as far as I knew (and I read a lot in the fandom). I strive to use prevalent characters, but also highlight one or two of the less popular. It's fun to flesh out a lesser known character. Thanks also for enjoying my Hermione/Lucius dynamic. I think they're intriguing together ... as colleagues, or even eventual friends, and possibly more intimate. But it's a delicate road to walk. Thanks very much for appreciating the story!
I love how in each chapter, things are explained, but really, I don't end up knowing much more than I did to begin with. It is wonderfully frustrating. I recently finished reading a really great mystery, so I hope this story can hold up against that one. ;)I enjoy the riddle aspect of this, even though I am rarely clever enough to figure them out.You have a great grasp on both Snape and Hermione's characters here. It was a little sad to me that he seemed shocked that she cared about him so much. It seems he has a lot to learn about what friends do for each other.Severus rolled his eyes. “Shall we dispense with the love-in?” That gave me a good laugh, and I can totally hear him saying just that.Interesting story about the Malfoys. Will we get to see Draco any time soon? It is sad what happened to Narcissa, even though I don't care much for either she or Lucius.I can totally picture the cursed boys lying there, all black faced. It is eerie, and I do hope there is something Hermione can add to this research team.A sphinx AND a ghost? They are so in trouble ...

I'm so very pleased to keep you intrigued. I hoped to create an onion-like story, so that each layer is distinct but only when you reach the middle do you see its entirety. And I'm blushing at your reference.I strive to keep the characters true to themselves, but also extrapolate where they might plausibly be eight, ten, twenty years post-war. I think Severus will always have 'bite' to his comments, and will always be a little insecure about his own worthiness (I was NEVER a fan of Lily Evans Potter). As always, it's quite wonderful reading what you think as you experience the story. Thank you!
Wow. Now there's a glitch to work through. I LOVE how you've showcased - and named lol - Severus' "saving people sort of thing". He sure did charge ahead like Harry would have. And the interaction between Hermione and Lucius is perfect. Both "moving on" but neither willing to give up their past interactions. Gonna be some fancy footwork to solve that little "riddle" much less any of the ones from the Sphinx. Love it all. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Lucius, Penny, and Hermione all have a lot at stake, and I think it helps them to have a common goal. I'm so pleased you liked how I have Lucius and Hermione working together, but not quite. I hoped to keep a little realism in their dynamic.Thank you very much for your kind words.
What a wonderful story this is...hoping for a happy ending too...
Response from Bambu (Author of Riddle Me This)
Thank you so much. I can't quite say about the ending, because that would be telling, but ....
Oh, this is great! And I'm supposed to be writing, not reading! But I couldn't resist, and now I'm totally drawn into the mystery! The Egyptian setting is gorgeously drawn, and the characterisation is perfect. I'm not usually a Lucius fan , but you've made him strangely sympathetic without discounting canon - I think it's the way he faces up to his past without really apologising for it. Hermione's fab and Severus is brilliant too, the noble idiot! I'm hoping for a happy ending, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the ride anyway!
Response from Bambu (Author of Riddle Me This)
I'm not sure whether to feel guilty for enticing you to read my story while you should have been writing, or utterly delighted I was able to entice you at all. I think I'll just bask in delight for a moment!I'm so pleased to have made Lucius believable and even a little sympathetic, especially as he's not terribly easy to like. He was a great cardboard villain until the moment in the Department of Mysteries when he attempted to persuade Harry to give up the prophecy before resorting to hexing. Had Bellatrix not been there, we might have had a different confrontation. At the end of DH, he is a broken man. What happens to him in the following five to ten years is rife with potential. Thanks for your marvelous review.
This story is amazing. I'm eagerly awaiting your next installment. The emotions are tense. The descriptions are engrossing. In short, I am a very happy fangirl tonight. Warm regards,
