Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.

A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.

Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Another amazing chapter!! I know that you have said before that it will be HG/SS eventually... but now I'm wondering if you've changed your mind, and if this will be a PP/SS instead?P.S. - I'd love to hear more about Snape's mum from Minerva & company. Maybe more about Snape as a child/student too.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm not sure what I said that you interpreted that way, but it's not going to be SSHG. Hermione's just a minor character in this fic. I put it in Hogwarts Castle & not in Potions Under Duress for precisely that reason. So I never changed my mind. I'm sorry if I said something that made you think it was SSHG There's an SSHG element in it, and a few SSHG chapters, but the overall story isn't.There will definitely be more about Snape's parents, so stay tuned! There's a plotline that's been slowly getting ready to emerge, as you may have guessed! Thanks very much for your review! Good to see you! :-)

I thought the plaques were interesting.  I was wondering why you changed the date of the Battle for Hogwarts.  Wasn't Sinistra an astronomy teacher or something like that.  I can't wait to see where this story goes.  Great chapter.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

This is a sequel to Death's Dominion, not DH, so nothing that was in DH was actually relevant. So I didn't change the date of the battle, I kept the date from the other story. :-)Glad you enjoyed the prologue! If you haven't read Death's Dominion, you may want to do that before going any further and seeing more spoilers. Thanks for the review!

Well, obviously everything I'd like to tell has already been told. All the apearing interactions were wonderful. I liked the one between Violet and Poppy most. But there's one imortant thing I have to say: I need more!^^Can't wait, where the date leads the relationship of those two... . And the duel...I'm still waiting for the duel, between the two most brilliant wizards^^.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Hi,

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

!I'm glad you're enjoying it, and that you liked Violet and Poppy's interactions!Severus and Gareth's duel will be immediately after the Easter holiday, which is two weeks of action, drama, and even some romance! Thanks for the review! I hope to have the next chapter up next weekend. In the meantime, I'm just about ready to post the next chapter of Charming the Scottish Garden, so you can amuse yourself with that while waiting! :-)TTFN!

Thanks for the pronounciation help, I've been muddling by but wondering if I was anywhere close. It was great to see Poppy with her sister. I especially enjoyed the sistery insight she has at the beginning to know what's up with Poppy and that she isn't really thinking about the crossword.  I was a little irritated with Violet trying to convince Poppy to stay away from Severus, but happy that she came around. It is very telling that she thinks of Severus as a possibility to quickly and I suppose it makes sense that she'd worry for her sister with what most people know of Severus. I enjoyed the visit to the Tyree estate. Nice to learn more of the families' history. I suppose with so few pureblood families there would be a lot of inter-relationships. It will be good for Severus to see a future for his family I think. Maybe give him some ideas. ;) I loved the garden tour, especially the spring garden and the description of the hybred that helped in the polyjuice antidote. It's clear to see how much work and inginuity you put into planning these stories and this universe. I'm always amazed and enjoy reading about it very much!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! I'm very glad you like all the various strands of characters and plot weaving through the stories and intersecting at different points. I'm sure that Violet only wants the best for Poppy -- and I'm sure you can see where she's coming from when she looks at Quin and then looks at Snape. Glad you liked the garden tour and the visit to the Tyree family estate forty years after Charming the Scottish Garden! Thanks for the review!

I so enjoy that Filius has noticed the "spark" between Poppy and Severus. Gareth is fun as always. Love the tidbits about his search for food with Melina and Brennan. Looking forward to more of Soifre and Johannas. (Still need to check out Charming the Scottish Garden too) :) Thanks for the note on the daisies and other flowers. I was curious.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Each time that Severus chooses flowers based on the card, if it isn't clear from the context of the chapter, I will make a note about what meanings he's using. :-)Glad you enjoyed the bit with Gareth. This is the right time to check out Charming the Scottish Garden, before the next chapter of LVS. :-)Thanks for the review! Glad you're enjoying it!

The pictures are a very creative and entertaining way to show glimpses of Severus' childhood and family background. Wonderful flirty banter between Severus and Poppy. The various breakfast confersation is fun. From the subjunctive tense to magical currents. Sounds like a typical morning at Hogwarts.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks -- glad you enjoyed it! I figure that they won't always be talking about Quidditch and robe fashions all the time! :D

Love Poppy and Tonks and the baby. Severus is adorable with him too...It really wasn’t too bad, for a baby and a Lupin, he supposed." Perfectly Severus! Brought a smile to my face too!Lovely details about the baby's eyes changing and Narcissa staying with Tonks, Poppy's sleuthing... I love that Tonks notices that Severus gave Poppy high praise. (Can't quite hid his high regard for the Hogwarts Matron can he?) Marvelous detail on the omnioculars too! You always add so much detail and so many little things that make your stories simply leap off the page and come alive! The details of the duel are also outstanding, from Filius' explanations to the rules to the actual description of the duel itself. Love the teasing between Poppy and Severus about the middle names. Cute. Can't wait to see it unfold

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! Nope, Severus can't hide his regard for the matron! Heehee!I'm glad you like the details in the chapter. It was fun to write Severus's interactions with some different people, and especially the baby. XDThanks very much for the review!

Leave it to Siofre to curse a guy in such a way that his own intent is what does the damage, and only his own intent can heal him. She is bloody epic.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

A nasty man who has nastiness oozing out of him made it easy for Siofre to turn it on him and focus it on his, um, "manhood." The Healers did what they could, but the results are always only temporary. Can't say I feel sorry for Crabbe! haha!Glad you like Siofre! Thanks!

I can understand why Violet would want Quin for her sister instead of Severus. I would, too. Who would wish a difficult man with such a past on someone she loved? But I thought it was precious the way Poppy defended him to her sister, despite her own reservations. Her vision of a future where Severus loses interest but stays with her out of obligation is pretty terrifying. It would terrify me, for sure. I really enjoyed the scene with the two sisters, sharing secrets and feelings and worries. But I had to laugh at the comparison of Severus to the Dickens characters, mostly because I couldn’t help but like the Uriah Heep comparison best. Not Dickens’s very ‘humble guy, but the ones with the long scraggly hair who sang about wizards and demons. I know, I know, only someone completely uncouth would automatically think of the band instead of the literary character!

I’m kind of excited for Severus that he is finally feeling up to new research opportunities and starting to network and collaborate professionally. Who would have guessed at the start of this story that he would be able to carry on normal conversations with complete strangers and make new friends? Gracefully accept gifts with no strings attached?

Good chapter. Thanks for posting again, I was jonesing.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad I could give you your fix!LOL! Actually, on my first round of revisions of this chapter, the Uriah Heep band came to my mind, too. But mainly I was thinking of the black-clad skinny, ugly, bent over, unpleasant, slithery slimeball from Dickens. Poppy has been really good for Severus -- well, all his friends have been, but especially being with Poppy. He still has lots of issues (yeah, like that's a surprise! haha!), but he's doing a lot better. Relating to Johannes, too, was easier for him than it would be with some other person, since he's heard of him before, he's a former Hogwarts teacher, and he also has a pleasant and nonaggressive -- and he's a Ravenclaw, which helps, too! Some of Severus's prejjudices might have kicked in if he were from a different House. In some ways, it's actually harder for him to interact with people who have known him for years, but not known him well, because he doesn't know how to break out of whatever pattern he had developed with them and whatever previously formed perceptions they have had of him. You're definitely right : if my sister was involved with someone like Severus but she could be with someone like Quin, I would be rooting for Quin! LOL!Thanks for the review!

Another fun chapter from you. It's so enlightening when we get to see/hear the thoughts of your characters in relation to their relationships.Poor Poppy! If only she knew exactly how Severus feels about her, she'd not waste her time worrying so much. Then again, it adds a nice little dynamic to the story.Snape's the same way, though. I'm glad he went to Johannes for some flowers. It means he gets some great flowers AND we get to see more of Johannes and Siofre. I just looooove those two together. tee hee. Haha, the image of Gareth "plonking" down on the piano caused me to giggle. Hope Johannes didn't need the headache potion!!!TTFN,the GLM

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Fortunately, Poppy is willing to give Severus a chance to show her how he feels -- if he takes the opportunity and the risk. Making a romantic evening for her is a good start for him, though.I'm glad you enjoyed seeing more of Johannes and Siofre. I'm having fun writing them -- it's a stress reliever for me. Yep, Gareth has a great appreciation for his own piano playing that others don't share! haha! Thanks for the review! Later!

I'm the happiest the woman! thank you! oh what a wonderful chapter!, I can understand Poppy having her reservations about Severus, but I'm sure she'll think differently after their date, I hope so at least. I'm not sure I like Violet very much lol. “I will.” Johannes smiled down at her and touched her cheek lightly with his fingertips. that's the best line in the chapter! they are sooooooo sweet!, and marriage wow! I'm trilled, and excited about CSG, I knew they'd make a great couple lol!I can't get over how cute Severus is, so nervous wanting everything to be just perfect, can't wait for the actual date to happen! Sam

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks, Sam, glad you enjoyed the glimpse of Johannes and Siofre forty years later! :-) I'm really happy that CSG is getting a few enthusiastic readers -- I wasn't sure about it.Violet's a caring, loving sister who is concerned (justifiably, when you think about it) about her sister. We'll catch up with Severus back at Hogwarts in the next chapter, and we can see how his attempts at setting up a romantic atmosphere go!

oh love the flowers and the card of meanings a nice touch. You hold the suspense out just perfectly before revealing what they mean. Oh damn Gareth and Filius and their timing. Ugh!I'm very intrigued about the escilation of the attacks. I can't wait to see how this mystery develops. That letter and list of attacks are very troubling. You've really crafted this story masterfully weaving so much together, the attacker plot, the romance with Poppy, Gareth's friendship, Hermione's post school life, Arthur's grief, so, so much. Brilliant!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! I'm really glad you like all these different strands and how they're woven together. Gareth and Filius did have bad timing there!Thank you!

The image and reference of the Rat Traps is absolutely brilliant. So snape and so perfect in so many ways! The house tour was another great way to find out more about Severus, his history and his family. Masterfuly done.

Once again I marvel at your ablility to make the magical seem mundane (in a good easy going way) in these conversations between characters. As a reader it makes it feel like they're talking about something common place and normal instead of completely foreign and magical. Your're exceptionally brilliant at it. This talk of arithmancy and cross-9s and shortcuts seems so matter of fact. Great Mother-Son conversation between Gareth and Gertrude. It makes perfect sense on both sides. Him spouting her advice back at her and her having a problem with his being so close to Snape. I love this line: "We can always do a permanent colour-change charm and make everything white or black if your choices turn out to abominable." Do anything you want... I can always change it if I don't like it. LOL

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Hi! I'm glad that the discussions of magic and Arithmancy seem natural to you and that you enjoy it!Glad you liked the revealing conversation between Gertrude & Gareth. We haven't seen the last of that little strand of the story.Ha ha -- yes, giving someone free reign, then saying it can always be changed does kind of make a person wish for a bit more specificity in direction rather than the prospect of having it all wiped out. lolThanks for the review!

I think I come down on Gertrude's side on the wards issue. I wouldn't want to undo centuries of family tradition if removing or lessening one ward would unravel them all and they couldn't  be put back. Love the story about Alroy and the details about the pig and seriously great details about Quin, his temper and how he takes care of people who have wronged him or those he cares about. Definitely a wizard not to be crossed.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Glad you enjoyed the stories! Yes, Quin is not a  wizard to be crossed -- and inventive in his revenge! Thorough, too!

wow! it's an amazing story, great plot and as usual wonderful wonderful writing! I do hope that Poppy and Severus have a future it is sad to get excited about a couple and see them break up and they are so perfect for each other, well your writing presents them so. I do have some question about Johannes relationship with Minerva's grandmother, but I guess I'll find out soon enough!. Can't wait for an update!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Thanks! I'm glad you've been enjoying it! I'm glad you like Poppy & Severus together, too. :-)I hope to have one of the stories updated sometime in the next couple of days. We'll see how things go!Thanks for the review.

I love HG/SS but this chapter has if not changed my mind then opened it up a bit, and I think that Poppy can be a perfect partner for Severus, it was weird at first but very nice and sweet!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Glad you liked it! And that you have an open mind! Thanks for reviewing!

I'm completely confused! I thought he was dating Hermione?? well in any case Poppy might be a better choice for him and she seems interested in him. I guess I'll find out soon enough! lol. Great chapter, very sexy I guess lol.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I'm glad you like the development! And that you found it sexy! ;-)Read on! Thanks for the review!

wow! I'm loving it! truly loving it! you are a genious, absolutely brilliant!!! though I also wonder about Gareth's friendship with Severus, rather strange after what Severus did to Gertrude! but so nice of him!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Glad you're loving it so much!Like Gareth said to Minerva in DD, once he met Snape, he wasn't at all what he had expected. So in the chapter of DD where he helps Severus after he'd been injured, he told him that he accepted his genuine contrition as if it were an apology. He wants to start fresh with him, and he did get to know him some during those last months of the war, and he saw what he went through, what he did, and all that. And Severus needs friends -- so Gareth offered his friendship to him -- and when he did, Severus accepted by sending him the IOU for the knife. Then they got to know each other better over the summer when Gareth bugged him to go out for drinks. Gareth is a good guy, and he's a "helper" type who wishes he could fix things for people he cares about. They also both got a lot out of their systems that night when Severus had the outburst about the tea. Thanks very much for the review!

I already wondered how long it would take someone else to notice there's something between severus and poppy!sure they're quite good at hiding it, but especially after this little party, I thought others must notice it. but I think it's better for severus, if people don't get it fast, only one by one. through his inexperience it would perhaps be confunding for him. the same counts for poppy, although with her I guess it's more the need to get used to loving him, especially with the age difference and so on. it was similiar with albus and minerva, wasn't it? by the way, I'm kind of missing those two...just as well as I miss some lemon on both sidesI'm dreaming about some kind of double-date, and after retiring each couple enjoys themselves.but anyway, I imagine ss/pp and mm/ad spending time together would be a lot of fun for them. I'm so sad that malcolm died...he and gertie were a couple just as cute as the other two (actually they're the first OC couple I praise that much!). I just reread some chapters were they feature (RaM) - I really do miss him. back to this story! if you feel desperate about sharing some spoilers, I'm offering myself to give you release . would you mind giving hints about the upcoming date? I have to admit it excites me just as much as the duel...you see (although I already mentioned it) some lemon wouldn't be too bad...well I'll just have to leave it to you but do not take too long with updating, or someone will go mad!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Oh dear! I do hope that no one goes mad!!! Eeep! In the meantime, go visit Johannes and Siofre in "Charming the Scottish Garden." Malcolm and Gertrude will pop up in that fic, too. :-) I'm glad you love Malcolm and Gertrude so much. I have to say, Malcolm is my favorite of my OCs, though I'm very fond of a few others, and it was a real wrench to have him dead during the later years, and to have Gertrude suffer as she did, but it worked in the overall scheme of things, and it fit with Malcolm's character. It would be a hard thing to give spoilers for the date, but I'll try a little bit . . . let's see . . . we could say that Severus does go to some effort to make a romantic evening, and he's lucky to have some help! And Poppy is looking forward to the evening, too -- and she has her own list of middle names, so the middle-name-game will continue during the date. I'm glad that you're enjoying the story! Thank you very much for the review! :-)

I expect that if Pomona knew Severus was raiding her greenhouses to romance his witch with, she might have tried to help him rather than fussing at him. But I'm glad she did. This visit with Gareth's relatives promises to be very interesting, especially if Severus is going to meet his cousin. Given that he's not had much reason to like his own family much, I hope he reacts well, especially if Eoghan looks anything like his grandfather Prince.I think he should have let Melina see to his injuries, too. I suspect Poppy's going to realize that he's been injured and will be upset that he didn't get it treated. And that might spoil the romantic atmosphere he's trying to set!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, I think Pomona would have been pleased to have helped out, but Severus only said that he'd needed them for some brewing he was doing, and as it had been her favorite bush, she was a bit put out! lol!I'm glad you're looking forward to the visit with Gareth's relatives, and meeting Severus's distant cousin. Gareth had mentioned to him that there were Princes in the Tyree family, but Severus wasn't interested, or seemed uninterested. So we will see what his reaction to young Eoghan is!I think you're right that he should have let someone like Melina take a look at his injuries, but that's Severus. Let's hope it doesn't provide too much of a set back for his plans. Thanks for the review!

Flitwick is so funny. I love that he's picked up on Snape and Poppy's budding romance. Sharing the straw a good start. tee hee.Yay! Siofre is back. She was so much fun in RaM and A Spree wth Albus. She and Johannes are just so darn cute together. I hope we get to see quite a bit of them in this section.I am cracking up over here with the "scented candles" bit. I never pictured Snape as a scented candle sorta guy. Thanks fot the update!!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

LOL! No, I don't think he's the scented candle type! haha! I'm glad you got a chuckle out of that. :DYou will definitely see more of Siofre and Johannes in the next chapter, and I hope to have the next chapter of "Charming the Scottish Garden" posted before then, and you'll see them both there, in the early RaM years. :-)Thank you for the review! I've had a sort of rough weekend, so it's nice to have a little positive feedback on the chapter. :-)

I am really enjoying the slow reveal of Severus's past. Discovering it with Gareth is even more interesting, since we not only learn more about Severus, we learn more about Gareth, too. I wonder who S. Morgenstern was. Another relative?I think he's wearing Poppy down. But "Penelope"? I would be going through all the floral p's. Pansy, Petunia, Petal, Peony... umm, Primula, Persimmon... Prunella... Parsley... Okay maybe not. I'm glad he's making such an effort to control his jealousy, although I'm sorry for him that he has to. I can understand that a man who has so few friends that he cares deeply for would feel jealous of them.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

When you re-read the chapter "Technique," you'll find out who S. Morgenstern was, and who it is that Severus is named after. ;-) However, I probably should have had Gareth recognize the name somewhere in the chapter, or his relationship with Severus, in order to remind readers. A bit of an oversight there! Sorry 'bout that! It's in the last part of the chapter, just before Poppy arrives.Oh, he's going to go through the flower names, although I think he'll skip "Parsley"! lol! He'll go through some others, too. He did figure that Penelope would be appropriate for a Hufflepuff, with the faithfulness and all, though. Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed the chapter!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

I just skimmed back over the chapter, and I did name Shmuel in the section about the photos. There's more info on him in the Technique chapter, though. Just at the end of the chappie. :-)

Response from Riposto (Reviewer)

I might remember something about a survivor of the Holocaust, and the irony of Severus becoming a death eater, but I'm not sure. I'll re-read the chappie.

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)

Yes, it's in the same section as that bit. Fortunately, his grandmother and his family got out in 1933, early. Hope you enjoy the bit of reread -- it may also resonate some w/ your recent reread of the earlier parts of the fic, with Severus's hallucinations/memories, in particular. :-)
