You captured it so well how our pets will listen to us and always take our side through the vagaries of life. It is no surprise that the man who was deserted by everyone would feel comforted by such an accepting companion.
I have read many stories where Snape gets a pet. It seems to allow him an outlet for his affections.

I like this proud yet vulnerable Snape. I can imagine him taking a liking to Pinky after he confiscated him... after all, everyone has to let their hair down once in a while.

I bet that somewhere , at the bottom of a draw, or in an old trunk, there is an old teddy bear it has one eye no ears or fur, but it was Severus' friend when he had no other. That man has a tender heart and I hope that ,now that the war is over, and Hermione has an excuse to see him{ just to check up on Pinkie of course }he may let her in, if she's lucky.

Aww, I love this! I'm going to insist (while on my knees begging) that you add more to this story! How long will pinky last? Will he thank hermione for prolonging the puffs life by taking her out to dinner? Will pinky die and she helps him deal with his grief over the companion that helped him through some of the hardest years of his adult life? MOAR PLZ!!
