Reading the Stories That Scars Tell
Chapter 9 of 12
Good_WitchHow did Snape survive Nagini’s attack, how did he and Hermione get together, and how did Prince Manor get involved? This was written for the 2011 SSHG Exchange, in response to aleysiasnape's prompt: Severus and Hermione are trapped somewhere in Prince Manor while exploring.
Chapter 9- October 10 through 29, 1998
Both of them were exceedingly polite to each other over the next several days. Snape knew he had made his feelings clear, but he wasn't going to rush Hermione. She, on the other hand, wasn't sure she could trust her feelings, so she continued in their normal routine, cautiously testing herself and Snape.
They continued their usual of dinners at the pub, expanded their attempts at cooking at home...sometimes with hilarious results...and delved into the books on loan from the Malfoys. Draco assisted in arranging more interviews, but placed them to more neutral locations so Hermione wouldn't have to face the traumatic memories at Malfoy Manor again.
Over the next few weeks, a pattern emerged. The nights that Hermione and Snape interviewed people for the book, they would inevitably stay closer to each other on the way home, pensive and sombre. And those were the nights when Hermione would wake from disturbing dreams to creep into Snape's room and join him in his bed, so he could keep the nightmares at bay. If those sleepy cuddles sometimes led to clinging embraces and desperate kisses, neither was willing to address it in the light of day, so a tacit truce of silence was kept.
As Halloween drew closer, Hermione asked, "Severus, do the children in this village do anything to celebrate Halloween?"
Snape scowled and said, "I wouldn't know."
Shrugging, she dropped onto the sofa beside him and said, "Well, would you want to do anything to celebrate?"
Snape cut a hostile look at her, making her blink and draw back in surprise. His voice was an acid growl as he retorted, "That's the last holiday I'd want to celebrate."
Comprehension dawned, and Hermione laid a sympathetic hand on his tense arm. "I'm sorry, Severus, I didn't think. That was silly of me to even ask. I know better."
With a gentle squeeze of his arm, she stood and left him with his painful memories. She didn't see his startled eyes following her as she retreated to her room.

Hermione insisted that she and Snape stay in Halloween night, trying a new dinner recipe and ridiculous recipes for sweets after casting surreptitious Do Not Notice charms on Spinner's End to deter anyone who might bother them. She was determined to keep Snape distracted enough that he wouldn't ruminate on the bad memories of this anniversary.
Snape knew what she was trying to do and was grateful for it. Considering how much he had grown to care for her, he was quite willing to go along with her silly plans, as long as it provided ample opportunity for her to delight him with her laughter and radiant smiles. The kitchen was a mess of dirty dishes as well as both successful and botched attempts at making caramels and other sweets. They were almost ill with how much they had gorged on sugary concoctions instead of proper food, so Snape led her to the basement to brew her a stomach-settling solution.
"This should make you feel better." He handed her the still warm dose and she sipped it carefully.
"Oh, it's not disgusting at all!" At Snape's snort, she hastily added, "You know what I mean...so many potions are absolutely vile to taste. This is pleasant."
Snape smirked and said, "Well, if one is already queasy, then imbibing a potion that would incite a gagging reflex would be rather counter-effective, now, wouldn't it?"
Hermione chuckled and downed the rest of the dose. "Indeed. I feel better already; thank you."
Snape bowed and gestured for them to go back upstairs. "It's late. We should probably turn in."
They continued on up to the bedrooms, and Snape paused at his door when Hermione said, "I had fun tonight, Severus."
One corner of his mouth quirking up, he said, "I enjoyed being with you, Hermione. Good night."
"Good night." She watched him shut his door, then secluded herself in her room as well.
It was barely an hour later when she tiptoed to Snape's room and carefully opened his door. In the chilly moonlight, she saw him lift his head and peer at her in concern. "Hermione?"
"Were you asleep? Did I wake you?"
He curled forward onto his elbows and said, "No, I wasn't asleep. Is everything all right?"
Hermione crossed to the bed and sank down beside him, gazing at him intently. Her voice was barely above a whisper as she said, "I was afraid you might be thinking about... other Halloweens... and I wanted to keep the demons away."
Snape's brows rose in astonishment, but they shot even higher when she suddenly leant forward and kissed him, pushing him onto his back again as she climbed into bed with him. Her kisses were insistent and her hands roamed over his body while her legs tangled with his under the blankets. When her lips travelled down his jaw to his scarred neck, he gasped, "Hermione..."
She nibbled on his earlobe and murmured, "Shh. It's time for you to have something else to associate with Halloween, Severus. Something good."
Snape groaned. "Something very good."
They snogged and caressed long into the night, until weariness claimed them, and they slept, their limbs twined together. Neither woke with nightmares, but when they did wake, neither hurried to get up either, content to lie there together.

That afternoon, Snape and Hermione were sitting on the sofa, shoulders and thighs touching as they both read the Malfoys' books. Suddenly, Hermione gripped Snape's thigh and sat up straight, gasping, "Severus! Look what I found!"
Snape looked where she was pointing in the old genealogy book and saw a page titled, "Prince." Brow furrowing, he set his book aside and pulled her book across their laps, zeroing in on the text describing his mother's side of the family.
Before he could get to the end of the first page, Hermione cried, "There's a Prince Manor? You never mentioned a Prince Manor before!"
Snape's eyes raced down the page to see that it was true; the book referred to Prince Manor as the ancestral home. "I never mentioned it because this is the first I've ever heard of it."
Hermione scanned the family tree on the facing page. "I don't see you listed either."
Snape looked and said, "My mother isn't even on here. That's how old this book is. My grandfather is here, but it doesn't even show who he married. Just his date of birth."
Hermione stared at Snape, owl-eyed. "Well anyway, surely you'll go see Prince Manor!"
Snape snapped his gaze to hers. "We don't even know if it still exists. You can see that the Prince line was on its way to dying out. My mother didn't have siblings."
Tossing her head in impatience, she said, "So find out! Severus, this is exciting! Don't you want to see the place where your family came from?"
Snape sneered. "Because they were ever so helpful and kind to me..."
Hermione rolled her eyes and huffed. "Oh, give over. Don't you want to learn about your family history? I thought you liked knowing as much as you could about things. I would." Snape snorted. "Please consider it. I'd go with you if you'd like."
Her hand caressed his knee and he cast a sidelong glance at her. "Fine. I'll find out if it still exists, and if it does, you can come with me to see it. Satisfied?"
She beamed at him and bounced forward to kiss him soundly. When she backed away, she said, "Very. Oh, I'm so excited for you!"
Snape smiled at her enthusiasm even as he shook his head at it. Turning his attention back to the section on his family, he made note of the location of the house and crossed to the worktable to write a letter inquiring about the property. I wonder if it still exists, and if so, whether anyone lives there...

Snape drained his pint and cleared his throat. "Hermione, are you busy tomorrow?"
Tilting her head in inquiry, she said, "No more than usual. Why do you ask?"
"Well, I finally got the details on Prince Manor, and I know you said you'd go with me..."
Hermione's face lit up with enthusiasm. "Of course! Oh, tell me all about it."
Snape flicked a glance around and said, "Not here."
She nodded and finished her meal. "Let's go."
They waved goodbye to Kelly and stepped out into the snowy night. Plumes of vapour streamed from their noses as they crunched through the latest layer of snow on the walkways. Snape murmured, "It's been abandoned, apparently. No one lives there now, nor has anyone lived there for years. It's very secluded, with quite a few Muggle-repellent enchantments woven into the grounds. Considering how long it's been vacant, I have no idea what sort of condition it's in. It could be a ruin of rubble or much like the Shrieking Shack by now. So, it could be dangerous. Are you sure you want to take the risk?"
Hermione turned to frown at him in thought. "Yes, but we should take precautions. If it could be that dangerous, perhaps it's time you taught me how to make that Portkey that saved you. And we should definitely tell people where we're going and when we expect to be back, just in case."
Snape's brows rose in startled consideration of her comments. "I hadn't thought of it that way. I can teach you how to do the Portkey, but it may not work right away. It's a very tricky piece of work."
Hermione shrugged and squeezed his arm. "So we go when we're ready. I daresay it's not going anywhere."
Snape snorted and said, "Indeed," as they reached the house and gratefully got out of the cold.

"There! That's exactly how it looked and acted when I completed the previous Portkey. So, I daresay it's ready. It took less time this time around...probably because I'd managed it before. You caught on quite quickly. Well done." Snape flashed a proud smile at Hermione.
"Thank you. If I had no idea whether it could work, I don't know that I could have got this far so quickly. I'm sure that having seen your success helped me. Besides, you can be an excellent teacher, you know." She twinkled at him and chuckled at his snort of derision. "At any rate, when shall we go? I want to let Harry know, just in case. It might come in handy to have an Auror-in-training to come to the rescue if necessary."
Snape nodded and said, "I'd like to let Minerva and Draco know as well. It'd be just my luck that the day we get into trouble is the day Harry gets knocked out cold in a training exercise and we'd be on our own."
Hermione laughed and caressed his knee. "Point taken, but I'm sure we can take care of ourselves pretty well. And would it be such a bad thing to be 'on our own'?"
Snape snapped a keen glance at her, noting the blush creeping up her throat and over her cheeks. It was the most overt thing she had said about their relationship thus far. Lips spreading in a wicked smirk, he murmured, "It hasn't been bad so far."
Hermione ducked her head to hide her pleased grin. Clearing her throat, she said, "Why don't we try this Saturday, so Harry will be free."
Snape nodded. "I'll contact Minerva and Draco right away."
They parted ways on their separate tasks, and the plan was set for heading out in two days' time.

Oh I enjoyed this immensely! Once I started I couldn't stop. A wonderful story all around. Loved it all. Thanks so much for sharing.

*beams* Why, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for reviewing! :)
That was a lovely story. I couldn't stop reading it once I started.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*blush* Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for reviewing! :)
*Dies laughing* When I reviewed the last chapter, I didn't actually expect them to be found au naturel. Not that I'm complaining, LOL.It was good of Draco to go to McGonagall and ask her to wrangle her ex-cubs. I love when people write mature Draco. And then a happy ending ... sigh. I am a sucker for those. So glad to see you back here again. I hope you have more up your sleeve! And soon!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*gigglesnort* I had way too much fun putting everyone through that awkwardness. *iz ebil* Glad you enjoyed it too. ;) I figured Draco should get a second chance too, just like our fave Slytherin, Severus himself. Thank you for all your lovely reviews! :)
Drat! I didn't want them let out. Because if it hadn't worked then someone would have eventually come to their rescue while they were a pile of naked limbs. If it were Draco, he has a bit of decorum, so he would walk in quietly, see what was going on, avert his eyes, back out of the room, and then make some noise so they would be alerted to his presence and could disentangle before he walked in.If it were Harry, he would come barging in balls to the wall and be on them before they knew what hit them. There would be gasping, and blushing, and awkwardness. He would let them out, then excuse himself to go. And probably end up inadvertantly telling Ron in which case the next war could begin.Minerva ... she would be the fun one because she strikes me as having some voyeuristic tendencies, LOL. Yes, it is settled, it must be her. Oh, wait, they already got out. Damn!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Heee!! I love your scenarios! LOL Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Boy are you lucky the next chapter is up or there would be some yelling and gnashing of teeth. I can't even say anything else as I am off to find out more.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
BWAHAHAHAHHAA!! Oh, that's awesome. ;D Thanks for reviewing! :)
Oh, yes! Danger is always good for bringing people closer together, LOL. I'm glad he has patience with her. It isn't like she isn't interested. She's just young and unsure of herself.I loved Halloween night. She is so thoughtful, and he goes along with whatever she does, just to be with her and to see her happy. This story is a nice change from the super angst ridden tales, or the ones where they jump into bed right away. Not that I don't love both of those scenarios, but this is just a refreshing change of pace.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*beams* You just made my day, saying you found this a refreshing change of pace. I was trying for something a little different from the things I'd previously done. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
So close, and yet so far. I suppose it is the best thing he can do, making his intentions clear, and then letting her set the pace. I believe she will come around when she is ready, and I think he realizes that too. But I hope it is sooner rather than later (and not just for my own selfish purposes) because that poor man has suffered enough.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
LOL!! Indeed. :D I think it's safe to say that most of us would rather it be sooner than later, for him AND for our own reasons. *snort* Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Oh, lovely. There is nothing better than some crazy drunken snogging with a man who has the sense to be respectful and take things slow until it can be done properly. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Mmmm, respectful snogging... ;D Glad you're enjoying it (as well as those two). Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
“Shall we?” Hermione's head was swimming, and she wondered just how much was really being asked with that innocuous question. That about sums it all up, doesn't it?I like your playful version of Severus. It looks good on him. And I love that even Kelly notices that there is something there. It is a good sign, indeed. And he is making plans for her. This ought to be good :)
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*applauds* I'm so glad that line came across to you the way I intended. :D I'm glad you enjoy flirty, playful Severus. It's about time the man got a chance to be that way. Thanks for such a lovely review! :)
Does she really not see that he has feelings for her? Of course, he isn't being terribly obvious about it, but still, has it not occured to her? But maybe it seems unlikely to her, or maybe she is young and inexperienced with these feelings, or maybe she is used to having close "boy friends" and so all of the touching and teasing and stuff just seems like what friends do. I am glad that she is moving in with him, and I hope that all goes smoothly.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
I think it's more inexperience than anything else. But it can be a nice slow buildup, right? LOL Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Oh, no! I hadn't even considered the fact that she and Ron might have a relationship, or an arrangement between friends, or whatever. I feel bad for everyone involved. But, I think both Severus and Hermione need to figure out exactly what it is they want and maybe this will be the catalyst to make each look at how they feel for each other, or at least how they are starting to feel, anyway.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Yeah, it was unfortunate for everyone, but perhaps it will be a good catalyst. Thanks for reviewing! :)
Yes, Severus, everything and everyone is better covered in chocolate! I love how playful he is with her without being inappropriate. I mean, I am looking quite forward to inappropriate, but they are just not quite there yet.Just why was he checking out the classroom? I hope he is looking for a workspace or something, because if he is thinking of preparing a room for her closer to his, he need not bother. She'll be in his bed soon enough. I know you won't let me down in that arena ;) A fun, flirty, all around lovely chapter!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
ROFL!!! I'm glad you enjoyed the flirting; it was SO much fun to write. ;D Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
That went very well. He was disconcerted by all the hand holding, but he didn't actually seem to mind. Of course Hermione is dying to learn anything she can get her hands on, and he surely has a lot to tell. I think this just might work out perfectly.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
hehehehe After all he's been through, it might be just the thing he needs--positive physical human contact. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
What a lovely start to a story. Good of Snape to make plans for such a situation to arrive, because with his luck, it always does. And he is in such good hands with Pomfrey and Hermione. I do hope he recovers and spends many happy years telling her his tale. *gets ahead of myself*
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*beams* Poor man did always seem to have bad luck, didn't he? Perhaps it's time for his luck to change! ;) Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
I am assuming they took all the books from the library before distroying the manor. Will Severus and Hermione ever rebuild there? Spinner's End doesn't sound like an exactly wonderful place to live, except for their friends at the bar. I don't remember if you said where Prince's family Manor is located. Great story!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
I would never presume to try to say where Prince Manor (or even Spinner's End, for that matter) was located. I know nothing about the UK. LOL Glad you enjoyed the story, and thanks for all the lovely reviews! :)
Well, I would say it was a damn good thing they had that book with them!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
It was rather illuminating, wasn't it? *snerk* Thanks for reviewing! :)
Oooooo, now it gets juicy. I like a mystery. I am going to guess that they have to do something as a couple to get out of that attic. This is a romance after all and they have been putting it off for quite some time now.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
LOL!! Indeed. Sneaky mirror! ;) Thanks for reviewing! :)
This story left me feeling happy and fuzzy and floaty....I really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Yay! I'm glad it took you to a happy place. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
What are Hermione's reservations about taking Severus' advances seriously, other than if it didn't work out it could ruin thier friendship? I know he is certain he will never want another. She knows his loyalty to Lily was utterly steadfast. If she only thinks about it she will realize that Severus Snape does not give his heart lightly. If it doesn't work out it would be because she didn't feel as deeply about him as he does her. I know he can be a bastard at times but she's already accepted that. What does he have to do, cut out his heart and give it to her on a platter to get her to stop running from him even though she seems interested at least?
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
She's young and inexperienced and doesn't want to take things lightly. Hermione has always seemed like one to over-prepare for things (the spying on the Ministry in book 7 comes to mind). Feelings can prove to be steadfast over time. It's only been a few months since he woke from the coma, after all. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Dear, wise Severus. He'll not take her while she's drunk. He'll want to know it's really him she wants. I hope she isn't so drunk she won't remember the wonderful snogging they experienced tonight. And I hope she won't be sorry. Come on, Hermione. Go for it! You can't mistake tonight's dinner as anything other than a romantic gesture. What's holding you back? Worried you don't want him enough in a sexual way? Is it the age difference? You can't possibly still be clueless to the fact that he wants you. I don't expect you to see that he is also in love with you, yet. Don't lead him on. OK?
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
He is wise, indeed. He may not have much experience, but he knows a really bad idea now when he sees one. ;D Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
I very glad Hermione seems to be having an attraction to Severus that is more than sisterly. He was always a master at biding his time. I noticed all the people she's inviting are young men. Except for Ginny and Luna she doesn't have any girl friends. That's why she is able flirt so innocently. I had the same problem. All my friends were guys, for the most part. Girls were catty at that age. I was closer to 30 before I learned to love my women friends and realize how important the girls club was for married women. I know some people say their spouse is their best friend, but frankly, a lot of men having trouble saying, "wow, that really sucks. I'm sorry" instead of thinking "What does she want me to do about it?"
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
It is a shame that Ginny and Luna are still at Hogwarts and can't come to her party. But, I think things turned out okay anyway... ;) Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Is Hermione the only one in the entire wizarding world who believes that anyone will actually believe they are only roommates? This isn't college. I'm glad she excepted but I'm wary. I don't want Severus' heart broken again. I wish she could see how simular to Lilly's her relationship with Severus is.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Aww, I promise, there's a happy ending. ;) There's a connection, but there also has to be mutual attraction... which Severus is all too willing to work on. Thanks for reviewing! :)
What did I say? She doesn't have a clue! Damn! I didn't think of Ron either. She's too young for Severus. She has no idea that you can't go touching a man and holding his hand all the time if you don't intend to send a message that you're interested in him. Poor Severus! She's led him on without meaning to. She's used to keeping Ron and her intellectual pursuits separate because he's such a cretin. I hope Severus sees that there is no real future for Hermione and Ron. Women don't stay with men who are less intellegent than they are, if they want an equal relationship and don't plan on being their mother. I hope Hermione realizes it too, sooner rather than later. I think Minerva should clue her in on how to interact with adult men. I remember my mom trying to tell me one of my male friends was in love with me. I thought she was silly. I realized the truth when he told me as he wept about a month before my wedding to my husband of almost 33 years. Once I knew, I realized I had been in denial about the fact that I had developed feelings for him as well. I was honestly torn. After 33 years, I still think of him very often and I wonder if he ever thinks of me. Severus is not Harry. Does she think of him as a brother or uncle? A lab partner or study partner at school? He's a grown man who has been very lonely. She understands the lonely but not the grown man part.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Ah, but the course of love never runs smooth... Give them time, darlin, they'll figure things out--eventually. ;) Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
What if he has nightmares with Hermione gone? I'm sure that's a good enough reason for her to stay the night with him. Only to hold his hand, of course. Hasn't she been sleeping next to him in the infirmary? I hope you are going to tell us what Hermione is thinking about when she gets back to her room. Does she realize he is flirting with her? Girls never realize that guys don't joke with girls they aren't attracted to. I was a girl once. We can joke and flirt and mean nothing by it but good fun. Men don't flirt and mean nothing by it. If they don't mean it, they don't flirt at all. What I'd give to be flirted with again. I do so miss it. I didn't realize how lucky I was so long ago. Well, enough of those sad thoughts. I'm sure Hermione can be flirted with enough for both of us to cheer up.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
LOL Our dear Hermione may be oblivious, but she's bound ot be smart enough to figure it out sometime, right? ;P Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
