Reading the Stories That Scars Tell
Chapter 5 of 12
Good_WitchHow did Snape survive Nagini’s attack, how did he and Hermione get together, and how did Prince Manor get involved? This was written for the 2011 SSHG Exchange, in response to aleysiasnape's prompt: Severus and Hermione are trapped somewhere in Prince Manor while exploring.
Chapter 5- August 29, 1998
Hermione welcomed everyone to her quarters at Hogwarts, having organized a party to celebrate the fact that she, Harry, and Ron had not only passed their N.E.W.T.s the week before, but Harry and Ron had officially been accepted into the Auror training program that started in three days.
Things had been quite strained between her and Ron since the first night she had moved into the dungeon at Hogwarts. When he wouldn't talk with her reasonably, she broke off the barely-official, short-lived relationship, which made Harry both relieved and sad. While Harry had come to visit her, Ron had not, but his elation at accomplishing his goals was enough that he managed to put aside his hurt feelings to join the party.
McGonagall, Pomfrey, Snape, Kingsley, Molly, Arthur, George, Ginny, Neville, Luna, and Draco were in attendance, but Snape made a point to stay as far away from Ron as possible in the crowded room. After the first hour or so, the Weasleys made their exit, once again congratulating the successful students, saying they had to get up early the next morning to take Ginny to get her school things. George, who was living back at the Burrow, went with them.
Not long after that, Kingsley left, pinning Harry and Ron with a stern look and saying, "I'll be keeping an eye on you two in Auror training."
Everyone laughed at his exaggerated expression, then Pomfrey said she'd join him on his way out. McGonagall and Snape were left with the younger crowd, but when Luna asked Snape about the book he was helping Hermione with, he didn't hesitate to answer her questions, drawing Neville's attention...well, anywhere Luna was drew his attention these days...as well as Draco's.
McGonagall crossed to where the trio were standing near the refreshment table and noticed that the finger foods from earlier were gone, replaced by sweets. "What's all this?"
Hermione grinned and said, "Well, I've determined that a celebration deserves the right food. So, I've set up a sort of ice cream bar and fruit fondue."
McGonagall scanned the array and said, "That's a lot of ice cream!"
She drew the other group's attention, and Draco said, "Ice cream? Where?"
The young people all crossed to the table, followed by a smirking Snape. When he stepped up, he said in a mock-stern tone, "Hermione, that's an awful lot of sweets. Is all that really necessary?"
Hermione exchanged a knowing look with him, making them both grin as she said, "I've been a very good girl, and Harry and Ron have been very good too, so I say we all deserve a treat! Dig in, everyone, and enjoy!"
Ron frowned at their obvious shared joke, making Harry sigh in weariness. McGonagall saw both Ron's scowl and the teasing camaraderie shared between Hermione and Snape, and shook her head at the clear sides being taken.
Hermione served up a bowl of ice cream with toppings, as well as a bowl of fruit dipped in the chocolate fondue, beaming at Snape as she passed him on her way to sit down and eat. She studiously ignored the awkward tension between Ron and Snape, focusing instead on having a good time.
When they were all full, McGonagall said, "I'll leave you to your party, Hermione. These old bones need more rest than yours. Congratulations to you all. Good night!"
Neville took the opportunity to ask Luna if he could take her home before it got too late, and she agreed, smiling serenely as he cupped her elbow to guide her out. Draco had just opened a Butterbeer, so he wasn't ready to leave yet, and he turned to the trio and Snape.
"So, you two start training on Monday, but what are you going to do, Hermione?"
Hermione grimaced and said, "I'm still knee deep in working on my book. Severus and I have made a list of people I'd like to try to interview, so I should really start working on that."
Snape added, "That's actually something I wanted to talk to you about, Draco. I know your mother and father could be useful in getting us appointments with some of these people, since they likely won't reply to Hermione."
Draco's brows rose, but he smiled. "Of course, whatever I can do to help, just say the word. If you'd like me to escort you to talk to any of them, let me know."
Hermione nodded in gratitude. "That's very kind of you. I'll keep that in mind."
Ron cut in, saying, "Term starts here on Monday too, and you can't stay here once school is in session. So will you finally move back home, Hermione?"
Hermione tensed, and Harry held his breath, looking quickly between his two friends. Snape held his breath, too, but for a different reason. Heaving a sigh, Hermione carefully said, "I don't know what I'm going to do yet, Ron. I know I can't stay here, and I've looked in the Prophet for places to rent, but nothing's come up so far. I do not, however, expect to move back to Number 12. If I have to, I can stay at the Leaky Cauldron for a while. I'll figure something out."
The silence after her statement was rife with tension. Draco stepped in and said, "If you can't find something suitable, Hermione, we have plenty of room at the Manor, as well as guest cottages. You're always welcome there."
Hermione flashed a tight smile at Draco. "Thank you. I'll let you know."
Draco inclined his head graciously and tried to change the subject. "Where will you be going, Severus?"
Snape cleared his throat and said, "Back to Spinner's End, I suppose. I would have gone long before now, but Poppy kept me here for treatment."
Draco nodded politely, then glanced at Ron's thunderous expression. Sensing that nothing would lighten the mood now, he drained his Butterbeer and said, "Well, it is late. I must be going. Severus, may I use your Floo?"
Snape shot to his feet at the same time Draco did, saying, "Of course. Follow me." He turned to the trio and said, "Congratulations on your achievements, all of you. Well done. Oh, and if you'd like to use my Floo as well, you're welcome to do so. I expect to be up for a while yet." At least until everyone has left, and I can speak to Hermione alone...
Snape and Draco left the three friends, glad to escape Ron's hostile glare. Hermione whirled on Ron and snapped, "Stop acting like a spoilt child! Everything was so lovely and you had to ruin it!"
Harry said, "Now, Hermione, that's going a bit too far..."
Hermione hissed, "It is not! Is it any wonder I don't want to live in the same place as you, Ron? What with the way you're acting? Honestly, get over it already!"
Ron's jaw twitched as he clenched his teeth. Growling through stiff lips, he said, "Fine. If that's the way you feel, then I'll get out of here. Wouldn't want to be in the same place as you."
He sprang to his feet, glaring at Harry. Harry reluctantly stood, followed by Hermione. "I guess we'll be going then. The food was great, Hermione. Listen, do you think Snape was serious about letting us use his Floo?" Beside him, Ron huffed in disbelief. Harry cut an irritated glance at him and said, "Shut up, Ron. You're the one who wants to leave so damn bad, and that's the fastest way. Just act like you've got some manners for a minute or so, all right?"
Ron's eyes narrowed angrily, but he kept his mouth shut. Hermione sighed as she led them out her door and down to Snape's, which was still open. Snape was saying, "Give my regards to your parents," to Draco as he stepped into the green flames and spun out of sight. He turned to see the trio entering, and his brows rose in surprise. "Oh, hello."
Harry's voice was weary as he said, "Can we use your Floo right now?"
Snape gestured to the hearth and said, "By all means; go right ahead."
Harry and Hermione said, "Thank you," in unison, and Harry hurried to the fireplace, flicking an acid glance at Ron to follow him. He tossed Floo powder into the grate, mumbled their destination, then waved his hand and said, "You go first," to Ron.
Ron nodded stiffly and stomped into the flames without another word. When he was gone, everyone exhaled in relief. Hermione darted forward to hug Harry, murmuring, "I'm sorry it ended like this Harry. I'll talk to you soon."
He returned the embrace and said, "Let me know what you figure out, all right? And you know you're welcome at home any time, even if it's just for a short visit."
Hermione smiled and said, "I know. Thank you. Good night!"
Harry tossed more powder into the hearth and said, as he nodded to Snape, "Good night. Thanks again."
Snape inclined his head and said, "Good night," as Harry whirled out of sight. Hermione heaved a huge sigh and sank onto the sofa, cradling her face in her hands. Snape sat beside her and said, "Come on, you should get some rest."
She allowed him to tug her to her feet and guide her back to her quarters, where he summoned a house-elf to take away all the remains of the party refreshments. Hermione plopped onto her tattered sofa and said, "Thanks."
Snape snorted mildly and said, "It's nothing." He perched beside her, watching her leaning back with her eyes closed. After a few beats of silence, he started to stand and said, "Why don't I let you go to bed."
Hermione's eyes flew open and she grabbed at his hand, pulling him back down to sit by her. "Stay! I'm sorry. I just... don't know what to do about him. And it's so hard on Harry, being stuck in the middle like that."
Snape shrugged. "I don't know what to tell you."
Hermione grimaced and said, "I know. I just didn't want the night to end on that sour note." She turned to him with a tired smile. "I'm glad you're here."
Snape smiled faintly, then his expression clouded as he regarded her thoughtfully. Hermione recognized that face and said, "What? What are you thinking?"
Snape swallowed, trying to calm the fluttering in this gut. "It's nothing. Just a silly thought."
Hermione squeezed his hand and said, "I could use something silly right about now. Go on, tell me."
Snape licked his lips and took a deep breath. Settling his shoulders, he said, "Well, it's just that we've got so much more to work on with the interviews, and we have to be out of here in a couple of days, and I just thought it might make things easier on you if...if you were to move into Spinner's End as a roommate."
Hermione's eyes went round in surprise. She blinked several times, and Snape felt his face warming. He ducked his head and said, "I told you it was a silly idea."
Hermione sat up, leaning forward to catch his eye again. "No! It's not silly at all! It's very generous... and kind. It just took me by surprise; that's all."
Snape met her gaze and saw that she was smiling fondly at him. He sucked in a shaky breath. "You'd have your own room. It'd be much like here, except that it'd be smaller, and we wouldn't have house-elves in the kitchen."
Hermione beamed at him. "I daresay we could muddle through. It's high time I learned to cook anyway." At Snape's wide-eyed look of wonder, she laughed. "Although, with your potions expertise, I think you might make a better cook than I."
Snape couldn't hold back the delighted grin that surfaced, and he said, "Well, we'll just have to make sure we stay stocked up on ice cream, fruit, and chocolate sauce, if nothing else."
Hermione laughed again, then launched herself forward to hug him tightly. Snape froze, used to the touch of her hand or a fleeting caress, but nearly overwhelmed by the soft warmth of her pressed against him in a fierce embrace. While she was wrapped around him, she murmured, "I'd love to, Severus. Thank you. You always seem to know just how to make my life easier."
He patted her back awkwardly until she released him, beaming. He cleared his throat and attempted a businesslike manner as he said, "Just being practical, my dear. Now, why don't you get some sleep, and we can hammer out the details tomorrow."
Hermione nodded and rose, followed by Snape. She peered up at him and said, "This is a much better ending to my celebration, Severus. Thank you again."
He shrugged and said, "After all you've done for me, Hermione, it's the least I can do to help."
They crossed to her door and she pulled on his arm to stop him from leaving. When he turned to her with an inquiring look, she bounced up and pressed a kiss to his cheek, smirking at his startled reaction. Her voice was soft as she said, "Good night, Severus," and shut the door.
Snape walked to his quarters in a daze. His chest and throat were tight with emotion, and tingles of heat raced through him from the spot where she kissed him, making his gut flutter again. Knowing she was on the other side of the wall and would be moving with him, staying close to him, he felt certain that he would be able to sleep through the night without being plagued by bad dreams.

Oh I enjoyed this immensely! Once I started I couldn't stop. A wonderful story all around. Loved it all. Thanks so much for sharing.

*beams* Why, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for reviewing! :)
That was a lovely story. I couldn't stop reading it once I started.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*blush* Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for reviewing! :)
*Dies laughing* When I reviewed the last chapter, I didn't actually expect them to be found au naturel. Not that I'm complaining, LOL.It was good of Draco to go to McGonagall and ask her to wrangle her ex-cubs. I love when people write mature Draco. And then a happy ending ... sigh. I am a sucker for those. So glad to see you back here again. I hope you have more up your sleeve! And soon!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*gigglesnort* I had way too much fun putting everyone through that awkwardness. *iz ebil* Glad you enjoyed it too. ;) I figured Draco should get a second chance too, just like our fave Slytherin, Severus himself. Thank you for all your lovely reviews! :)
Drat! I didn't want them let out. Because if it hadn't worked then someone would have eventually come to their rescue while they were a pile of naked limbs. If it were Draco, he has a bit of decorum, so he would walk in quietly, see what was going on, avert his eyes, back out of the room, and then make some noise so they would be alerted to his presence and could disentangle before he walked in.If it were Harry, he would come barging in balls to the wall and be on them before they knew what hit them. There would be gasping, and blushing, and awkwardness. He would let them out, then excuse himself to go. And probably end up inadvertantly telling Ron in which case the next war could begin.Minerva ... she would be the fun one because she strikes me as having some voyeuristic tendencies, LOL. Yes, it is settled, it must be her. Oh, wait, they already got out. Damn!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Heee!! I love your scenarios! LOL Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Boy are you lucky the next chapter is up or there would be some yelling and gnashing of teeth. I can't even say anything else as I am off to find out more.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
BWAHAHAHAHHAA!! Oh, that's awesome. ;D Thanks for reviewing! :)
Oh, yes! Danger is always good for bringing people closer together, LOL. I'm glad he has patience with her. It isn't like she isn't interested. She's just young and unsure of herself.I loved Halloween night. She is so thoughtful, and he goes along with whatever she does, just to be with her and to see her happy. This story is a nice change from the super angst ridden tales, or the ones where they jump into bed right away. Not that I don't love both of those scenarios, but this is just a refreshing change of pace.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*beams* You just made my day, saying you found this a refreshing change of pace. I was trying for something a little different from the things I'd previously done. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
So close, and yet so far. I suppose it is the best thing he can do, making his intentions clear, and then letting her set the pace. I believe she will come around when she is ready, and I think he realizes that too. But I hope it is sooner rather than later (and not just for my own selfish purposes) because that poor man has suffered enough.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
LOL!! Indeed. :D I think it's safe to say that most of us would rather it be sooner than later, for him AND for our own reasons. *snort* Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Oh, lovely. There is nothing better than some crazy drunken snogging with a man who has the sense to be respectful and take things slow until it can be done properly. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Mmmm, respectful snogging... ;D Glad you're enjoying it (as well as those two). Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
“Shall we?” Hermione's head was swimming, and she wondered just how much was really being asked with that innocuous question. That about sums it all up, doesn't it?I like your playful version of Severus. It looks good on him. And I love that even Kelly notices that there is something there. It is a good sign, indeed. And he is making plans for her. This ought to be good :)
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*applauds* I'm so glad that line came across to you the way I intended. :D I'm glad you enjoy flirty, playful Severus. It's about time the man got a chance to be that way. Thanks for such a lovely review! :)
Does she really not see that he has feelings for her? Of course, he isn't being terribly obvious about it, but still, has it not occured to her? But maybe it seems unlikely to her, or maybe she is young and inexperienced with these feelings, or maybe she is used to having close "boy friends" and so all of the touching and teasing and stuff just seems like what friends do. I am glad that she is moving in with him, and I hope that all goes smoothly.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
I think it's more inexperience than anything else. But it can be a nice slow buildup, right? LOL Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Oh, no! I hadn't even considered the fact that she and Ron might have a relationship, or an arrangement between friends, or whatever. I feel bad for everyone involved. But, I think both Severus and Hermione need to figure out exactly what it is they want and maybe this will be the catalyst to make each look at how they feel for each other, or at least how they are starting to feel, anyway.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Yeah, it was unfortunate for everyone, but perhaps it will be a good catalyst. Thanks for reviewing! :)
Yes, Severus, everything and everyone is better covered in chocolate! I love how playful he is with her without being inappropriate. I mean, I am looking quite forward to inappropriate, but they are just not quite there yet.Just why was he checking out the classroom? I hope he is looking for a workspace or something, because if he is thinking of preparing a room for her closer to his, he need not bother. She'll be in his bed soon enough. I know you won't let me down in that arena ;) A fun, flirty, all around lovely chapter!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
ROFL!!! I'm glad you enjoyed the flirting; it was SO much fun to write. ;D Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
That went very well. He was disconcerted by all the hand holding, but he didn't actually seem to mind. Of course Hermione is dying to learn anything she can get her hands on, and he surely has a lot to tell. I think this just might work out perfectly.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
hehehehe After all he's been through, it might be just the thing he needs--positive physical human contact. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
What a lovely start to a story. Good of Snape to make plans for such a situation to arrive, because with his luck, it always does. And he is in such good hands with Pomfrey and Hermione. I do hope he recovers and spends many happy years telling her his tale. *gets ahead of myself*
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
*beams* Poor man did always seem to have bad luck, didn't he? Perhaps it's time for his luck to change! ;) Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
I am assuming they took all the books from the library before distroying the manor. Will Severus and Hermione ever rebuild there? Spinner's End doesn't sound like an exactly wonderful place to live, except for their friends at the bar. I don't remember if you said where Prince's family Manor is located. Great story!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
I would never presume to try to say where Prince Manor (or even Spinner's End, for that matter) was located. I know nothing about the UK. LOL Glad you enjoyed the story, and thanks for all the lovely reviews! :)
Well, I would say it was a damn good thing they had that book with them!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
It was rather illuminating, wasn't it? *snerk* Thanks for reviewing! :)
Oooooo, now it gets juicy. I like a mystery. I am going to guess that they have to do something as a couple to get out of that attic. This is a romance after all and they have been putting it off for quite some time now.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
LOL!! Indeed. Sneaky mirror! ;) Thanks for reviewing! :)
This story left me feeling happy and fuzzy and floaty....I really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Yay! I'm glad it took you to a happy place. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
What are Hermione's reservations about taking Severus' advances seriously, other than if it didn't work out it could ruin thier friendship? I know he is certain he will never want another. She knows his loyalty to Lily was utterly steadfast. If she only thinks about it she will realize that Severus Snape does not give his heart lightly. If it doesn't work out it would be because she didn't feel as deeply about him as he does her. I know he can be a bastard at times but she's already accepted that. What does he have to do, cut out his heart and give it to her on a platter to get her to stop running from him even though she seems interested at least?
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
She's young and inexperienced and doesn't want to take things lightly. Hermione has always seemed like one to over-prepare for things (the spying on the Ministry in book 7 comes to mind). Feelings can prove to be steadfast over time. It's only been a few months since he woke from the coma, after all. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Dear, wise Severus. He'll not take her while she's drunk. He'll want to know it's really him she wants. I hope she isn't so drunk she won't remember the wonderful snogging they experienced tonight. And I hope she won't be sorry. Come on, Hermione. Go for it! You can't mistake tonight's dinner as anything other than a romantic gesture. What's holding you back? Worried you don't want him enough in a sexual way? Is it the age difference? You can't possibly still be clueless to the fact that he wants you. I don't expect you to see that he is also in love with you, yet. Don't lead him on. OK?
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
He is wise, indeed. He may not have much experience, but he knows a really bad idea now when he sees one. ;D Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
I very glad Hermione seems to be having an attraction to Severus that is more than sisterly. He was always a master at biding his time. I noticed all the people she's inviting are young men. Except for Ginny and Luna she doesn't have any girl friends. That's why she is able flirt so innocently. I had the same problem. All my friends were guys, for the most part. Girls were catty at that age. I was closer to 30 before I learned to love my women friends and realize how important the girls club was for married women. I know some people say their spouse is their best friend, but frankly, a lot of men having trouble saying, "wow, that really sucks. I'm sorry" instead of thinking "What does she want me to do about it?"
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
It is a shame that Ginny and Luna are still at Hogwarts and can't come to her party. But, I think things turned out okay anyway... ;) Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
Is Hermione the only one in the entire wizarding world who believes that anyone will actually believe they are only roommates? This isn't college. I'm glad she excepted but I'm wary. I don't want Severus' heart broken again. I wish she could see how simular to Lilly's her relationship with Severus is.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Aww, I promise, there's a happy ending. ;) There's a connection, but there also has to be mutual attraction... which Severus is all too willing to work on. Thanks for reviewing! :)
What did I say? She doesn't have a clue! Damn! I didn't think of Ron either. She's too young for Severus. She has no idea that you can't go touching a man and holding his hand all the time if you don't intend to send a message that you're interested in him. Poor Severus! She's led him on without meaning to. She's used to keeping Ron and her intellectual pursuits separate because he's such a cretin. I hope Severus sees that there is no real future for Hermione and Ron. Women don't stay with men who are less intellegent than they are, if they want an equal relationship and don't plan on being their mother. I hope Hermione realizes it too, sooner rather than later. I think Minerva should clue her in on how to interact with adult men. I remember my mom trying to tell me one of my male friends was in love with me. I thought she was silly. I realized the truth when he told me as he wept about a month before my wedding to my husband of almost 33 years. Once I knew, I realized I had been in denial about the fact that I had developed feelings for him as well. I was honestly torn. After 33 years, I still think of him very often and I wonder if he ever thinks of me. Severus is not Harry. Does she think of him as a brother or uncle? A lab partner or study partner at school? He's a grown man who has been very lonely. She understands the lonely but not the grown man part.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
Ah, but the course of love never runs smooth... Give them time, darlin, they'll figure things out--eventually. ;) Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
What if he has nightmares with Hermione gone? I'm sure that's a good enough reason for her to stay the night with him. Only to hold his hand, of course. Hasn't she been sleeping next to him in the infirmary? I hope you are going to tell us what Hermione is thinking about when she gets back to her room. Does she realize he is flirting with her? Girls never realize that guys don't joke with girls they aren't attracted to. I was a girl once. We can joke and flirt and mean nothing by it but good fun. Men don't flirt and mean nothing by it. If they don't mean it, they don't flirt at all. What I'd give to be flirted with again. I do so miss it. I didn't realize how lucky I was so long ago. Well, enough of those sad thoughts. I'm sure Hermione can be flirted with enough for both of us to cheer up.
Response from Good_Witch (Author of Reading the Stories That Scars Tell)
LOL Our dear Hermione may be oblivious, but she's bound ot be smart enough to figure it out sometime, right? ;P Thanks so much for reviewing! :)
