An old wand finds its witch at long-last as a new Muggle-born enters the wizarding world. Suzie finds more than a few diversions along the way, from her first trip to Diagon Alley to the Hogwarts Express to the Sorting Ceremony. Her first encounter with Severus Snape is particularly dramatic—and potentially traumatic.
Not DH-compliant. A “sister story” to A Long Vernal Season.
Chapter One: Wand Waving
Warning: Spoilers for A Long Vernal Season and for Death’s Dominion, to which Long Vernal Season is the sequel.
Part of the Resolving a Misunderstanding universe.

My dear, that's really a lovely, lovely fic! I admire the way you create your own characters again and give them so much live that it seems unbelievable nobody wrote about them yet. The whole bit about the wandlore is simply fascinating, and I really enjoyed myself enormously with this first chapter.
Author's Response: Thanks, Alcina! I appreciate your kind words! I'm very glad you're enjoying the story and the wandlore!
Thank you for the review!
YAY!!! A new story!!!!! I most certainly look forward to reading more about Suzie Sefton and her adventures in the megical world It's such a sweet, quirky beginning! Loved the ending

Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
! Good to see you!Yep, a new story, but just a little one. I hope you enjoy it! (It actually goes with A Long Vernal Season, which is where Suzie makes her first appearance.)Thanks for your review! Glad you enjoyed the beginning!
Lovely story! Miranda seems like an interesting character too. Now . . .don't tell me Minerva is wearing *that same blue suit*?!? I know she's a practical and thrifty witch, and maybe some house-elf has updated the style, but really! I would think having Minerva visit the muggle parents would be less scary than having Albus do so. Much more reassuring.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Yep, it's the same blue suit! LOL! She doesn't wear it very often, after all! She also wore it at the beginning of DD, you may remember. She does have others, but she's always liked that one. ;)Yes, Miranda thought that Minerva didn't seem at all eccentric or alarming -- I don't know what she would have made of Albus, but you're probably right! Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Monkey pod wood! Alright! This is really fun. I'm totally enjoying old Ollivander's interactions with a brand-new Muggle-born witch.I can't imagine that Wizarding sweets are going to go down very well for Suzie, are they? Poor kid.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Yeah, that sweets trolley -- a danger zone for sure! LOL! I'm glad you liked old Ollivander. Suzie's visit was good for his soul. Glad you liked the monkey pod wood. It was the first thing I thought of when I wondered to myself what sort of wand Suzie would have (yeah, I know, my mind is strange!), and then this story just jumped up and down in my head until I wrote it. haha! Thanks for the review, Di!
Response from dmf1984 (Reviewer)
Plus the monkey pod tree is in Hawai'i (and elsewhere in the Pacific islands). The wood, often used to make musical instruments, is gorgeous!
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
It really is beautiful wood. The grain is so gorgeous, as you say. And as Ollivander put it, it's "vibrant"! :D
Aww, what a cute start to the story. Suzie is a fun character to get to know.Good work! :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
What a charming and original tale! I am hooked.I see from the other reviews that you have already written another tale about Susie. I must read it when I find time!
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Hi, Pookah! Thanks! I'm glad you like it!Suzie first appears in the chapter "Don't Frighten the Firsties" in A Long Vernal Season, and she pops up at least by reference several other places, and she's in one of the Halloween chapters at the Hogwarts fancy dress party. It's actually a Severus Snape fic, but Suzie can steal a scene! I hope you continue to enjoy the little fic! Thanks again.
This was a fantastic start to Suzie's story. She's a character that's grown on me, the more I've read about her in Long Vernal Season. I found myself chuckling several times at her Mother and also when she was trying to find her wand. That was my absolute favorite part, especially when old Ollivander arrived on the scene. He was a hoot! I'm looking forward to seeing the Hogwarts Express through Suzie's eyes, not to mention getting onto the Platform. eeeep.Looking forward to the next update!
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Thanks! I'm glad you like the beginning of Suzie's adventures in the wizarding world!Haha! You liked old Ollivander -- he was a hoot to write, too!Yep, that sticky problem of finding Platform 9 & 3/4! LOL!Thanks much for the review!
Oh, this is sweet! The characters are portrayed with such a depth that as a reader you get a feeling for them in just this one chapter.

This is charming! I like Susie, and I'm interested in seeing what a post-war Hogwarts will be like for her.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Thanks! I'm glad you like her. She's kind of a hoot and a half, as someone else said. You should see what she dared do at the Hogwarts Halloween party (in A Long Vernal Season). Thanks very much for the review! Hope you continue to enjoy this little fic!
You never explained why Suzie got sick all the time! She has issues with sweets? My scientific mind MUST KNOW!Cute story!
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Well, like Suzie said, her parents regulated her sweets. She also doesn't eat meat, and she tried to eat some to fit in, both on the train and at dinner. But basically, way over-eating on the sweets, combined with eating chicken and other things her tummy wasn't used to, had her upchucking on Snape. Then at the feast, she had a wee bit of beef, but the main problem was the droobleberries on the trifle, which she didn't yet know she was allergic to. And then, of course, there were the droobleberries! She does tend to overdo and try to eat all kinds of new things when she encounters them -- she's very curious! -- so that is part of the problem. Just too much of even things she normally could eat in moderation will set her off! LOL!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Awww - poor kid. I see she has some of the same tastes as her Author Mummy! *winks*She is a cute kid and definatly helps paint a better picture for Slytherin.
*snip*Suzie quickly put her hand out to be shaken. She and her friends never shook hands, except in school programmes, but she didn’t want to seem uncouth. Her mother had told her to be sure to mind her manners and not act like she’d been raised in a barn.Hehehe
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Suzie is quite earnest about making a good impression!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
She's a real cutie - especially for a Slytherin, and Cyrus reminds me of Ron and Andrew reminds me of a kind Percy - like if Percy wasn't such a snob. And Antonia reminds me of a very snobby Hermione. Hehehehehe
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
I'm glad you like her. :-)Antonia is a bit insecure, so she tries to act like she's not.
LOVED this! LOVE!
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
I'm glad! Now you see why she lost her lunch -- and everything else -- all over Snape's robes!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Oh HO! Suzie can see the thestrals? hrm.....
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Great-grandma died at home when Suzie was a little girl, and everyone was with her. She, of course, has no idea that most of the kids can't see them.
I love your descriptions of the Slytherin dormatories. We never got to "see" those and I love your vision of them. I've been going back and reading bits of ALVS along with this and it's making me want to reread all of it.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
I'm glad you liked that.It can be fun to reread the bits of LVS that go with this story, and I can understand getting the bug to reread the whole thing. I never thought I'd write a fic that focussed on any of the students, canon or otherwise, aside from the parts of RaM that showed Minerva as a student, but this was fun to write. Thanks for your reviews!

Thanks!
Great glimpse inside Slytherin House and of the other students. All their little spats and Slytherinness. I really enjoyed Poppy's description of Severus.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the chapter!
Fantastic details about all the other students Suzie meets on the train. You set the perfect post war tone, so much loss, a 12 year old whose parents kept him home last year. Suzie seems like quite the gifted little witch being able to do those spells on her own. So she can see the Thestrals, wonder what death she's seen. I feel kinda sad for her. It's no wonder she was sick - I felt nauseous just reading about all of it. What a picture Severus must have been too though I love the way you describe his look even as the mess vanished with a silent spell.
Response from OldFashionedGrl (Reviewer)
Just reminding myself of what was going on in ALVS at the start of the school year and I remember now it was Twisket helping Severus. (so I'm slow.) I can see how it would play though Suzie's eyes and she's certainly developing quite a crush.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
I'm glad you liked the tone and the various students and their histories. Suzie saw an older relative die in bed. Nothing too traumatic. :-)Yep, Suzie was a bit too experimental with those sweets and everything. Hardly a surprise she lost it all! And yes, it was Twiskett who Vanished it all -- totally impressing all the kids.Suzie is developing a crush on Snape, that's for sure! Like Draco says later, he doesn't know whether she wants to marry him or be him, but she's got it bad!Just a little trivia: There's no reason you would remember this from RaM, but Cyrus Sprangle is the grandson of Septimus Sprangle, the annoying Head Auror from RaM -- the one who thought it would be a good idea to send Tabby Minerva to France in a bag! LOL! And this is an even more minor (minuscule, in fact) detail, but Albus's Herbology teacher when he was at Hogwarts was Professor Campbell, who is a great-great grandmother (or more than that -- I'd have to look it up) of Andrew. Then Stan Raffles shows up again in the Quidditch bet chapter in LVS -- and he's the grandson of Stanley Raffles, to whom Gertrude spoke about Minerva for Hogwarts, a History in RaM. LOL!
Response from OldFashionedGrl (Reviewer)
I love all the little details! Thank you. Now that you mention it I definitely remember Septimus Sprangle. Not too bright. LOLYes - wanting to dress like Severus - it is like she can't figure out if she wants to marry him or be him - definitely major hero worship.
Wonderful descriptions of Olivander, Ambrose, the elf little Suzie and her out of her element Mum. Looking forward to how this will unfold and what I'll learn. I really enjoyed the references to Minerva and her wand history.
Response from MMADfan (Author of The Sorting of Suzie Sefton)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Suzie's mum certainly was out of her element, wasn't she! Thanks again!
