A black cat? Hmmm - perhaps Minerva has a different Animagus colour in your AU, oder Sirius  is not a dog... or someone else is an Animagus... or it is simply a cat? *grin*
Interesting to see Malfoy as Snape's protector. Seems to be quite a good idea, at first, until the bithday present part... phew, that's hard stuff. You described very well how Snape experienced this and how he felt and make it plausible to understand why he did it, even if he didn't like it in the least.

How sad that his friends know so little about him, and he felt obligated to do what they wanted.  It seems that his serving a master started very early for Severus.Hopefully this new world will give him a better future. 

God this is awful. Maybe it's a good thing he was sent in the future. He will able to have a clean bill and new choices of life.

It would appear that neither of these timelines is 'our' timeline. (I should say, JKR's timeline)  Curiouser and curiouser.  Dark and scary bit of backstory, there. I am looking forward to more insight into this world where Lucius Malfoy is tolerant and Tom Riddle is (apparently) not an evil-overlord-in-training.

Frightening, poignent look at the "group-think" aspect of behaviour. It's quite sad that young Severus has had so few to turn to. Lovely.

A very interesting first chapter, I liked it! My dislike of Dumbledore only grew after reading this prologue, I could almost feel an unce of sympathy for Lucius too, at least he cared some about Severus being able to finish his homework. I look forward to read more!
