Thank you! He certainly does understand unrequited love, so I feel quite sure that Severus, who is just as besotted with her, would have cuddled and comforted poor Lily. What an utterly adorable green-eyed monster! I can see small children flocking to Severus. Sort of like the dog picking the one person in the room who doesn't particularly like animals. It's very sweet that he would allow himself only the smallest show of affection with his stroking thumb. Also very Slytherin in that said thumb was stroking her to sleep, which is the most tolerable of states in toddlers.
