Remus stood off to one side in the Hogsmeade post office, checking that the address was correct on the parcel he held, when in walked Severus Snape. Before he could stop them, words erupted from his mouth: "Severus! What in heaven's name are you doing here?"
His colleague, who up to that moment hadn't noticed him—or perhaps had been pretending not to notice him—turned slowly towards him. Lips curled disdainfully, he said, "What am I doing here? What do you suppose I'm doing here? I imagine the same thing you are doing—" he glanced pointedly at the package in Remus's hands "—trying to send a piece of mail without everybody at Hogwarts knowing my business. Only, as luck would have it, whom should I find here but—" He muttered the rest under his breath and turned away.
Remus supposed that was just as well. It was surprising enough that Severus had answered his question directly. He decided to keep his mouth shut rather than press his luck any further.
Severus turned back to face him. "Look," he said rather reluctantly. "Let's forget we saw each other here. I won't mention it if you won't. No one need ever know."
"It'll be our secret."
"Yes." Severus nodded.
"It's a deal." Remus proffered his hand.
Severus frowned at it as if he had no idea what he was expected to do with it.
"To seal the deal," Remus prompted. "It's not official until we shake on it."
He was about to drop his hand in defeat when Severus reached out and grabbed it for an instant, then dropped it just as quickly.
Long after Severus had gone, Remus could still feel the smooth, cool touch of his hand. Nothing was more surprising than that.
