The cat's wail, Severus thought, wasn't so much plaintive as demanding, with an inflection of irritation. Upon inspection, he discovered the irritation was probably self-directed: Granger's Kneazle-beast had managed to wedge itself in a half-closed portrait-hole, ample hindquarters dangling.
He considered simply leaving. The animal's as insufferable as Granger. But then, Severus could admit to fellow-feeling with one who'd manoeuvered itself into an untenable position.
So he carefully disengaged the creature— speaking crisply when it attempted to claw —and carried it to its mistress.
He was very nearly floored when her tearful reunion embrace included not only cat but man.
